In recent days I met an old high school classmate while walking through the streets of town. Richard (that's my friend's name) informed me that he had remodeled his small cabin in an area of the mountains called “La Cachera” and suggested me to visit the place whenever I wanted since his goal is to rent the place during the weekends to tourists who want to visit our mountains and spend the night there...

En días pasados encontré a un antiguo compañero de secundaria mientras caminaba por las calles del pueblo. Richard (así se llama mi amigo) me informó que había remodelado su pequeña cabaña en un área de las montañas llamada "La Cachera" y me sugirió visitar el lugar cuando quisiese ya que su objetivo está siendo alquilar el lugar durante los fines de semana a turistas que deseen conocer nuestras montañas y pernoctar en ellas...

My friend Richard told me that he occasionally sleeps at the cabin, but his work in town prevents him from being there on a daily basis. So, on my visit to the place during a working day, I would surely find there his cousin “Eduardo”, a guy I have always known, but who is also very famous for his marked habit of speaking very little and making use of monosyllables or single words when he does it?. So I jokingly asked Richard: And Eduardo is the one in charge of taking care of the tourists? Then they will feel like they are in a monastery or something! 😂... Richard burst out laughing and answered me: No, no, when we have visitors my wife and I are in charge of taking care of their stay!... I thanked Richard for his invitation and told him I would go visit the place as soon as I had the chance.

Mi amigo Richard me dijo que él ocasionalmente duerme en la cabaña, pero su trabajo en el pueblo le impide estar allá a diario. Entonces, en mi visita al lugar durante un día laboral, seguramente encontraría allí a su primo "Eduardo", a quien conozco desde siempre, pero quien también es muy celebre por su marcada costumbre de hablar muy poco y hacer uso de monosílabos o palabras solas cuando lo hace... Así que pregunté a Richard en torno de broma: ¿Y Eduardo es el encargado de atender a los turistas? ¡Entonces se sentirán como estando en un monasterio algo por el estilo! 😂... Richard se desternilló en risas y me contestó: ¡No, no, cuando tenemos visitantes somos mi esposa y yo los encargados de atender su estadía!... Le agradecí a Richard su invitación y le dije que iría a visitar el lugar apenas tuviese oportunidad.

So it was that last Wednesday, on one of those afternoons when we are having power outages, I took my camera and headed west into the mountains with the intention of reaching “La Cachera” and visiting my friend's cabin, now remodeled. But this post is not only about my visit to the cabin, I also want to share with you all my experience during the more than 3.5 km ascent to that place on an afternoon with good weather in the valley. Así fue como en pasado miércoles, en una de esas tardes en la que estamos teniendo cortes de electricidad, tomé mi cámara y puse rumbo a las montañas al Oeste con la intención de llegar a "La Cachera" y visitar la cabaña de mi amigo ahora remodelada. Pero esta publicación no se refiere solo a mi visita a la cabaña, sino que también quiero compartir con ustedes toda i experiencia durante los más 3,5 Km de ascenso hasta ese lugar en una tarde con buen clima en el valle. Before starting the ascent I stopped to observe a small bamboo forest growing at the foot of the hills. It was a windy afternoon coming from the north and when that happens, in the bamboo forests you can usually hear enchanting melodies thanks to the wind caressing the stems and leaves of these huge plants. However, in addition to the sounds, I was fortunate to observe a friendly Brown-throated sloth swinging on the bamboo branches. These are relatively common animals in our forests, although they are often difficult to spot due to the slowness with which they move and their ability to hide in the foliage. But when they venture into the bamboo forest they are often easier to spot and photograph... Another surprise was to observe a cute Rufous-tailed jacamar bird watching me very calmly while I was taking pictures of the sloth... It's a really beautifully colored bird species!... 📷

Antes de comenzar el ascenso me detuve a observar un pequeño bosque de bambúes el cual crece al pie de las colinas. Esa era una tarde con bastante viento proveniente del norte y cuando eso sucede, en los bosques de bambú suelen escucharse melodías encantadoras gracias al viento acariciando los tallos y las hojas de estas enormes plantas. Sin embargo, además de los sonidos, tuve la fortuna de observar un simpático perezoso balanceándose en las ramas de los bambúes. Estos son animales relativamente comunes en nuestros bosques, aunque con frecuencia son difíciles de detectar debido a la lentitud con la que se desplazan y a su capacidad de ocultarse en el follaje. Pero cuando se aventuran en el bosque de bambú suelen ser más fáciles de detectar y fotografiar... Otra sorpresa fue el observar un lindo tucuso barranquero observándome con suma tranquilidad mientras hacia las fotos del perezoso... ¡Es una especie de ave con colores hermosos realmente!... 📷

I reluctantly left the bamboo grove behind and started to climb. I've never been a very athletic guy and I wanted to reach my destination with enough sunlight to take pictures and at the same time avoid returning in the dark of night. However, I can never avoid stopping at some viewpoints and taking pictures of the scenery when I go up these mountain roads. Besides, it was a beautiful evening and I wanted to share this view with you.

Dejé atrás el bosquecillo de bambú a regañadientes y me dispuse a seguir el ascenso. Nunca he sido un tío muy atlético y deseaba llegar a mi destino con suficiente luz solar para hacer fotografías y al mimo tiempo evitar regresar en la oscuridad de la noche. Sin embargo, nunca puedo evitar detenerme en algunos miradores y hacer fotos del paisaje cundo voy por estos caminos montañosos. Además, era una tarde hermosa y quería compartir esta visión con ustedes.

My friend Ivan is an accomplished marathon runner and at 60 years old his physical condition is enviable. So he passes by me greeting me with the same naturalness as when he sees me in the streets of the village, while I answer him with effort and very little air available in my lungs 😂... I meet a family going up the road; they are going to spend the night in their house in the mountains after a day working in the village. They do this on a daily basis and this route seems to them to be a common and ordinary thing to travel daily.... So this day, I may be the only one having the feeling (and the luck) to be doing an exploratory tour.

Mi amigo Iván es un maratonista consumado y ya a sus 60 años su condición física es envidiable. Así es que él pasa a mi lado saludando con la misma naturalidad de cuando me ve en las calles del pueblo, mientras yo le contesto con esfuerzo y muy poco aire disponible en mis pulmones 😂... Encuentro a una familia ascendiendo por el camino; ellos van a pernoctar en su casa en las montañas después de un día laborando en el pueblo. Hacen esto a diario y este trayecto les parece algo común y corriente de recorrer a diario... Así que este día, yo sea quizás el único teniendo la sensación (y la suerte) de estar haciendo un recorrido exploratorio.

A few meters to the right of the road and almost in the shadow of the mountains, I find the entrance to “La Cachera”. There is a small chapel built with stones and mortar, my friend Richard and his brothers are very good at making constructions with this type of materials and also working as blacksmiths. So we can assume that this is a very artisanal place and undoubtedly attractive to the eye...

A pocos metros a la derecha del camino y ya casi con la sombra de las montañas proyectándose sobre el terreno, encuentro la entrada a "La Cachera". Hay una pequeña capilla construida con piedras y argamasa, mi amigo Richard y sus hermanos son muy buenos haciendo construcciones con este tipo de materiales y también trabajando como herreros. Así que es de suponer que este es un lugar bastante artesanal e indudablemente atractivo a la vista...

As soon as I arrived at the entrance to the site I spotted Eduardo, shouted hello and explained that I had promised Richard to visit the site and take some pictures. Then Eduardo, in his typical way of interacting with the rest of the humans around him, replied, “Hello,” turned around and said “come in...” 😆 This was happening just as I had predicted it would!.... Eduardo is a good guy, but he's not really good at talking to other people. Although I'm not a very talkative guy either (maybe that's why I write a lot) so Eduardo's little eloquence made me feel quite comfortable.

Apenas llegué a la entrada del lugar avisté a Eduardo, le saludé a gritos y le expliqué que había prometido a Richard visitar el lugar y hacer algunas fotos. Entonces Eduardo, con su típica manera de interactuar con el resto de los humanos a su alrededor, contestó: "Hola", dio media vuelta y dijo "pasa"... 😆 ¡Esto estaba sucediendo tal como había previsto que pasaría!... Eduardo es un buen tipo, pero en realidad eso de hablar con otras personas no se le da muy bien. Aunque yo tampoco soy un tipo demasiado conversador (quizás por eso escribo mucho) así que la poca elocuencia de Eduardo me hizo sentir bastante cómodo.

As Eduardo went along with me saying things like: living room, staircase, wifi, bedroom, bathroom, wall, path, kitchen and so on, I realized that the place is charming and is at the same time a demonstration of the incredible ability of my friend Richard and his brothers to build with craftsmanship (since they were very young they are known for building chapels and other things with stones). Also, the interior of the place reveals my friend's passion for recycling everything he finds and turning it into an ornament. You can tell there is a lot of creative art in this place and perhaps even Richard himself is not fully aware of how lovely this is to see.

Mientras Eduardo iba junto a mi diciendo cosas como: Sala, escalera, wifí, dormitorio, baño, pared, camino, cocina y así sucesivamente, me percaté de que el lugar es encantador y es al mismo tiempo una demostración de la increíble habilidad de mi amigo Richard y sus hermanos para construir artesanalmente (desde muy jóvenes son conocidos por construir capillas y otras cosas con piedras). Además, el interior del lugar delata la pasión de mi amigo por reciclar todo lo que encuentra y convertirlo en un adorno. Se puede decir que hay mucho arte creativo en este lugar y que quizás ni siquiera el mismo Richard esté totalmente consciente de cuan encantador de ver es esto.

I asked Eduardo if I could take a portrait of him and he simply said “No”, turned around, left me alone in the dining room and then returned with a cup of delicious steaming coffee. Then he smiled and pointed with his finger saying “kitchen” and walked off to where he had previously pointed.... The kitchen uses firewood and there is even an oven to make bread and other foods that require it, there are also functional microwave ovens embedded in stone walls and a lot of pots, plates, glasses, cutlery and pans of different types and materials for everyday use. It really is a very rustic place, but undoubtedly 100% enjoyable.

Le pregunté a Eduardo si podía hacerle un retrato y dijo simplemente "No", se dio media vuelta, me dejó solo en el comedor y luego regresó con una taza de delicioso café humeante. Después sonrió e indicó con su dedo diciendo "cocina" y se fué caminado hacia donde apuntó previamente... En la cocina se usa leña e incluso hay un horno para hacer pan y otras comidas que lo requieran, también hay hornos microondas funcionales empotrados en paredes de piedra y un montón de ollas, platos, vasos, cubiertos y sartenes de distintos tipos y materiales destinados al uso cotidiano. De verdad es un lugar muy rústico, pero indudablemente disfrutable al cien por ciento.

I spent a few more minutes taking some pictures of the place while Eduardo let out a “Yes” or “No” as an answer to some of my appreciations about the picturesque and interesting ornamentation of the cabin and its surroundings. Then, from an old AM radio located near the bathroom door and on an old VHS, the voice of an announcer said that it was 6:00 PM and the national hymn began to play, so I said goodbye to Eduardo and set out to return to the village with a view to return still with sunlight.

Estuve algunos minutos más haciendo algunas fotos del lugar mientras Eduardo dejaba escapar un "Sí" o un "No" como respuesta a algunas de mis apreciaciones sobre lo pintoresco e interesante del ornamento de la cabaña y sus alrededores. Entonces, desde una vieja radio AM ubicada cerca de la puerta del baño y sobre un viejo VHS, la voz de un locutor dijo que eran las 6:00 AM y comenzó a sonar el himno nacional, así que me despedí de Eduardo y me dispuse a retornar al pueblo con miras a regresar aún con luz solar.

I don't like to sleep outside my home, but having places like this easily accessible, it becomes a real temptation to make exceptions and arrange to spend the night here... Before (in my teenage days) I used to go camping in these places, maybe it's time to go back to sleeping a few nights here from time to time.

No me gusta dormir fuera de mi casa, pero el hecho de tener lugares como este fácilmente accesibles, se convierte en una verdadera tentación para hacer excepciones y disponerme a pernoctar aquí... Antes (en mis tiempos de adolescente) solía hacer camping en estos lugares, quizás es hora de volver a dormir algunas noches aquí de ves en cuando.
