The morning of the first day of the year began with me "escaping" the noise of the revelry in the village streets and heading as discreetly as possible towards the hills to the west. I did this, yes, to find some peace and quiet during this time of year when celebration mingles with chaos. But also to get some exercise and—of course—take some photos of the landscape in these parts, now that it's January and the drought has settled in comfortably over the valley, resulting in less fog, the trees shedding their leaves, the pastures turning ochre and yellow, and occasional dust devils rising in the wind... Oh, and of course, some interesting backlighting from the 7:00 AM sun, already high on the horizon and beginning to warm the atmosphere...

La mañana del primer día del año comenzó conmigo "escapando" del ruido del jolgorio de la gente celebrando en las calles del pueblo, y dirigiéndome de la manera lo más discreta posible hacia las colinas al Oeste. Lo hice sí, para encontrar un poco de silencio y aislamiento en estas fechas en las que la celebración se mezcla con el caos. Pero también para ejercitarme un poco y -como no podía hacer de otra manera- hacer algunas fotos del paisaje en estos lugares, ahora que es Enero y la sequía está instalada a sus anchas en el valle, haciendo que haya menos niebla, que los árboles desnuden sus hojas, que los pastizales se tornen ocres y amarillos, y que ocasionales polvaredas se levante con el viento... ¡Ah!, y por supuesto, con algunos interesantes contraluces del sol de las 7:00 AM ya alto en el horizonte y comenzado a calentar la atmósfera...

This is just the beginning. Here, the dry season can last well into April, so as the days go by, the trees will become even more bare. Even the densest forests will transform into complex tangles of almost abstract, whitish branches, and some grasslands will burn with wildfires, becoming an even more dramatic visual element. Smoke and dust will also affect the atmosphere, bringing exquisitely complex light and density. I intend to photographically explore all of this this year, so these photos are perhaps an initial rehearsal for what's to come...

Esto apenas comienza, aquí la estación seca puede durar hasta bien entrado el mes de Abril, así que con el paso de los días los árboles estarán con sus ramas aún más desnudas. Incluso los bosques más densos se transformarán en complejos entreveros de ramas blanquecinas casi abstractas, y algunos pastizales arderán con el fuego de los incendios, convirtiéndose en un elemento visual aún más dramático, también el humo y el polvo afectarán la atmósfera y eso traerá luces y densidades exquisitamente complejas. Tengo en mi mente explotar fotográficamente todo eso esta año, así que estas fotos son quizás un ensayo inicial para lo que se viene...
