The southern end of the "La Majada" (The sheepfold) Valley, here in the rural surroundings of Montalbán, is a great place for taking lots of photographs as well as for long walks (we're talking up to 7 km of paths, depending on where you want to go). Along the way, you'll find pastures, slopes, paths with tree tunnels, inclines, mountain landscapes, forests ranging from deciduous to coniferous, patches of savanna vegetation, plenty of cows, and much more to appreciate and enjoy as you stroll carefree through these landscapes.

El extremo Sur del Vall de "La Majada" aquí en los alrededores rurales de Montalbán, es un lugar tan bueno para hacer un montón de fotografías como para hacer largas caminatas (estamos hablando hasta de unos 7 Km de caminos, según donde se desee llegar) en las cuales podrán encontrar pastizales, pendientes, caminos con túneles de árboles, senderos inclinados, paisajes con montañas, bosques que pueden ser desde caducifolios hasta de coníferas, trozos con vegetación de sabana, un montón de vacas y muchas cosas más para apreciar y disfrutar mientras se camina despreocupadamente a través de estos parajes.

The day I did this hike, I started skirting the southernmost edge of this valley around 8:00 AM. I arrived here via the "Agua de Obispo" road, the same one I frequently travel on my daily exercise hikes. But at a certain point on this road, there's a turnoff with dirt tracks, which lead to "La Majada" in different directions. This time, I chose one that passes through a small hamlet with humble houses built of mud and wood, because I'd wanted to photograph those structures for a long time and hadn't yet done so.

El día que hice esta caminata, comencé a bordear el extremo más al sur de este valle cerca de las 8:00 AM. Llegué aquí a través de la carretera de "Agua de Obispo", las misma que recorro muy frecuentemente en mis caminatas diarias para ejercitarme. Pero en un punto muy de esta carretera, hay un desvío con caminos de tierra, los cuales llevan hasta "La Majada" por diferentes rumbos. Esta vez, yo escogí un que pasa por un pequeño caserío con humildes viviendas construidas de barro y madera, pues hace tiempo que deseaba fotografiar esas estructuras y no lo había hecho.

That day I felt quite energetic, so I even ventured onto one of the paths that climb the steep hills at the far end of the valley. This added about a kilometer to my hike, but it was well worth it because I took some photos from the top, which I really liked. Also, the sky was very clear that day, and the air was light and fresh; therefore, this hike suddenly became, I might even say, somewhat "therapeutic." There are many interesting places to visit here, so I'll have to come back soon to explore the places and paths that I couldn't visit this time.

Ese día me sentí con bastante energía, así que incluso me atreví a tomar uno delos caminos que ascienden las empinadas colinas al extremo del valle, esto agregó cerca de 1 km de recorrido adicional a mi caminata, pero valió de la pena pues hice algunas fotos desde lo alto, las cuales me gustaron mucho. Además, ese día el cielo estaba muy limpio, y el aire era ligero y fresco; por lo tanto, este recorrido repentinamente se tornó incluso, podría yo decir, un tano "terapéutico". Hay lugares muy interesantes para visitar aquí, así que tendré que venir próximamente para ir a lugares y caminos los cuales esta vez me fue imposible recorrer.

The place owes its name to the fact that many sheep were raised on these lands in the mid-20th century. Back then, in the flatter parts of the valley, there were many corrals and pens used by shepherds to shelter their flocks overnight. The largest ranch in the area even adopted the name "La Majada" (The Sheepfold), and it remains so to this day. However, sheep farming declined sharply, and nowadays almost all of these lands are used for cattle ranching. So, whenever I come here, I take a lot of pictures of cows! And you know how much I love photographing cows, and this time was no exception.

El lugar debe su nombre al hecho de que en estas tierras se criaban muchas ovejas a mediados del siglo pasado. Entonces, en las partes más planas del valle, existían muchos corrales y rediles usados por los pastores de los rebaños para hacer pernoctar a los animales. Incluso, la más grande de las haciendas de este lugar, llegó a adoptar el nombre de "La Majada" y así permanece hasta estos días. Sin embargo, la cría de ovejas decayó abruptamente y hoy en día la casi totalidad de estas tierras están destinadas a la cría de ganado vacuno, así que ¡siempre que vengo aquí, hago un montón de fotos de vacas!, y ustedes saben cuanto me gusta fotografiar vacas, y esta vez no fue la excepción.

Some corn and oilseed crops can also be seen, but these are less prevalent than livestock farming, at least during this drought. Furthermore, the vegetation along the road is what I would call "strangely varied." As I mentioned before, there's everything here, from savanna vegetation to some coniferous forests and even areas with a somewhat xerophytic appearance. The conifers are not native to this area and don't grow naturally here; rather, they are remnants of a timber development project from the last quarter of the 20th century. This project aimed to use many of the hills around Montalbán as forests for planting pine trees, which would then be sold to the timber and paper industries. However, the entire project ultimately failed, presumably due to the onset of the economic crisis.

También se pueden observar algunas siembras de maíz y oleaginosas, pero esto ocurre en proporciones menores a la actividad ganadera, cuando menos así es en estos días de sequía. Por otra parte, la vegetación observable a lo largo del camino es lo que lo llamaría "extrañamente variable". Pues, tal como dije antes, hay de todo aquí, desde vegetación de sabana, pasando por algunos bosques de coníferas y hasta espacios con algo de aspecto xerófilo. Las coníferas no son originarias de aquí y no son árboles que crezcan naturalmente en la zona, sino que son las reminiscencias de un proyecto de desarrollo maderero del ultimo cuarto del siglo pasado, con el cual se pretendió usar muchas de las colinas alrededor de Montalbán como bosques para la siembra de pinos y su posterior comercialización para la industria maderera y del papel. Pero todo ese proyecto terminó fracasando, supongo que por la llegada de los años de crisis económica.

Whatever the case, "La Majada" is a place where you can't remain indifferent to the surroundings. There, nature and rural life converge perfectly, making it especially good for taking lots of photos and going home happy...

Sea como sea, "La Majada" es un lugar en el que no se puede permanecer indiferente al entorno. Y allí, la naturaleza y lo rural convergen de manera perfecta, y esto especialmente bueno para hacer un montón de fotos y volver a casa contento...
