During my teenage years and well into adulthood, one of my favorite authors was Gibran Khalil Gibran. I loved that exchange of ideas and thoughts which was established almost immediately when reading his works. He was, along with Kafka and Hermann Hesse, one of my favorites, I also liked to spend hours discussing with a couple of friends (one now deceased and the other out of our country since decades ago) the universe of ideas, the subject matter and how those authors faced many of the traditionalisms and paradigms of their time and ours...

Durante los años de mi adolescencia y hasta bien entrado en la adultez, uno de mis autores favoritos era Gibrán Jalil Gibrán. Me fascinaban sus novelas, sus poemas y muy en espacial sus cuentos cortos. Me encantaba ese intercambio de ideas y pensamientos el cual se establecía casi de inmediato al leer sus obras. Era, junto con Kafka y Hermann Hesse, uno de mis favoritos, también me gustaba dedicar horas a discutir con un par de amigos (uno ya fallecido y otro fuera de nuestro país desde décadas atrás) el universo de ideas, la temática y como enfrentaban esos autores muchos de los tradicionalismos y paradigmas de su época y de la nuestra...

In the past few days, while taking pictures on the streets and roads in my town, an idea came to my mind about the dead and the life after life. The truth is that it was a "very unphilosophical" idea and rather a "little crazy" (like many of my ideas, by the way)... But what I thought was something like: "Heaven must be a place where we can spend the day taking pictures and we meet again all the dogs and cats we had while living in this world".... 😂😂😂😂 I told you it was a crazy idea!... Don't you think?

En días pasados, haciendo fotos por las calles y caminos del pueblo, se me vino a la mente una idea respecto a la muerta y a la vida después de la vida. La verdad no era una idea muy poco filosófica y más bien un "poco loca" (como muchas de mis ideas, por cierto)... Pero lo que pensé fue algo así como: "El cielo ha de ser un lugar en donde se puede pasar el día tomado fotos y nos volvemos a encontrar con todos lo perros y gatos que tuvimos mientras vivíamos en este mundo"... 😂😂😂 ¡Les dije que era una idea loca!... ¿No les parece?

What Khalil Gibran has to do with this crazy "celestial hypothesis" which I had at that moment, is that I immediately associated this with one of his short stories that appear in his work titled "THE MADMAN" (1918). This particular story is titled "The wise dog" and basically has to do (at least so it has seemed to me since I read it) with the certainly limited way we can have to understand the points of view of others, using for this only ours...

Lo que Jalil Gibrán tiene que ver con esa loca "hipótesis celestial" que tuve en aquel momento, es que de inmediato asocié esta con uno de sus cuentos cortos que aparecen en su obra titulada como "EL LOCO" (1918). Este cuento en particular se titula "El perro sabio" y básicamente tienes que ver (cuando menos así me ha parecido a mi desde que lo leí) con la manera ciertamente limitada que podemos tener para entender los puntos de vista de otros, usando para esto solo los nuestros...

"THE WISE DOG"
One day there passed by a company of cats a wise dog.
And as he came near and saw that they were very intent and heeded
him not, he stopped.
Then there arose in the midst of the company a large, grave cat and
looked upon them and said, “Brethren, pray ye; and when ye have
prayed again and yet again, nothing doubting, verily then it shall
rain mice.”
And when the dog heard this he laughed in his heart and turned from
them saying, “O blind and foolish cats, has it not been written and
have I not known and my fathers before me, that that which raineth
for prayer and faith and supplication is not mice but bones.”

Es un cuento corto, pero aleccionador y muy interesante... Aquí se los copio para que lo lean, les tomará apenas un minuto y seguro les gustará.

"EL PERRO SABIO"
Cierto día pasó un perro sabio cerca de un grupo de gatos.
Al acercarse y ver que estaban muy entretenidos y despreocupados de su presencia, se detuvo.
Al instante, se levantó en medio del grupo un gato grande y grave, el cual miró a todos y dijo: -Hermanos, orad; y cuando hayáis rezado una y otra vez, sin dudar de nada, en verdad lloverán ratas.
Y el perro, al oír esto, riose en su corazón y se alejó, diciendo:
-¡Ah! Ciegos y locos gatos, ¿acaso no fue escrito y no he sabido yo y mis antepasados antes de mí, que lo que llueve merced a las oraciones, a la fe y a las súplicas, no son ratas, sino huesos?

😂 It's an interesting story, don't you think? The truth is that, as always, this brilliant author was telling us something, posing us a dilemma, making us think, only a handful of lines were enough for that... And in the middle of all that I was in the street, with a camera in my hand, proposing that: "Heaven was a place to take pictures and live with our pets!"... Obviously that would be a good sky for me!... But who else could it be for? So maybe I was unconsciously behaving like that "Wise Dog"... Or like cats praying, I don't know!

😂 Es un cuento interesante ¿no lo creen?... Lo cierto es que como siempre, ese genial autor nos decía algo, nos planteaba un dilema, nos hacía pensar, bastándole para eso sol un puñado de líneas... ¡Y en medio de todo eso estaba yo en la calle, con una cámara en la mano, proponiéndome que: "El cielo fuese un lugar para hacer fotos y vivir con nuestras mascotas!"... ¡Obviamente ese sería un buen cielo para mi!... ¿Pero para quien más podría serlo?. Entonces quizás yo inconscientemente estaba comportándome como ese "Perro sabio"... ¡O como esos gatos orando, no sé!

Well, be that as it may, I don't really have an exact certainty about what comes after being here for a while, nor do I want to go into rambling theories about it, much less opt for rigidly learned or inherited concepts... For the moment, I find it quite fun to imagine a "paradise where I can take pictures, plus see my dogs and cats again (I'd like to include a few turtles, I also had as a child and a small parrot I rescued in the countryside)... Although for the time being, I will try not to look like the "Wise Dog" nor "Cats praying for rats to rain", I will simply be careful to use the widest lens, the most appropriate ISO, the necessary shutter speed, so that my point of view and that of others are relatively safe...

Bien, sea como sea, en realidad no tengo una certeza exacta de qué cosa viene después de estar aquí por un tiempo, tampoco quiero entrar en divagantes teorías al respecto y mucho menos optar por conceptos rígidos aprendidos o heredados... Por los momentos, me parece bastante divertido imaginar un "paraíso en donde hacer fotos, además volver a ver a mis perros y a mis gatos (quisiera incluir unas cuantas tortugas que también tuve cuando niño y a un pequeño loro que rescaté en el campo)... Aunque por los momentos, procuraré no parecerme al "Perro sabio" ni tampoco a "Los gatos rezando para que lluevan ratas", simplemente tendré cuidado de usar el lente más amplio, el ISO más adecuado, la velocidad de obturación necesaria, para que el punto de vista mio y el de otros, estén relativamente a salvo...
