Sometimes the fog here in Montalbán (Venezuela) is not only perched on the streets and, as it were, wandering through them. No, it also happens that—and this I affirm from both a photographic and an emotional point of view—the fog also gets into your head, transforming your vision and your thoughts at the exact same time. Personally, I like to say that the fog transforms the town into a completely different place when it invades the corners of the streets and houses. There are a lot of factors that make going out to shoot street photography something especially dramatic on a foggy morning...

Algunas veces la niebla aquí en Montalbán (Venezuela) no está únicamente posada en las calles y, como deambulando, en ellas. No, también ocurre que —y esto lo afirmo tanto desde el punto de vista fotográfico como del anímico— la niebla se mete en la cabeza, transforma la visión y también el pensamiento a la misma vez. A mí, particularmente, me gusta decir que la niebla hace que el pueblo se transforme en un lugar distinto cuando ella está invadiendo los rincones de las calles y de las casas. Hay un montón de factores que hacen que salir a hacer fotografías callejeras sea algo especialmente dramático en una mañana con niebla...

The humidity drawing shadows on the streets, the cracks in the houses and on the pavement seem deeper; suddenly, shadows appear, walking like specters in the midst of a white, dense atmosphere. The town's streets seem shorter, simulating disappearance just a few dozen meters from where they are viewed... The town seems to shrink with the fog and belong to a different dimension, where things happen more slowly and in whispers...

La humedad dibujando sombras en las calles; las grietas de las casas y en el pavimento parecen más profundas; repentinamente, aparecen sombras que caminan como espectros en medio de una atmósfera blanca y densa. Las calles del pueblo parecen más cortas, simulando desaparecer a apenas unas decenas de metros desde donde se miran... El pueblo parece encogerse con la niebla y pertenecer a una dimensión distinta, donde las cosas suceden más despacio y en susurros...

Even people seem more distant when the streets are wrapped in fog, and this is especially true toward the western edge of the town, where everything is older and has changed very little over the years. There, people appear and disappear through the fog almost without greeting. As if partial invisibility provided them with a kind of license to become absorbed in themselves at will. Even I go simply through the streets looking and taking photos, greeting —when I do— with barely a monosyllable that allows me to remain in that kind of ethereal isolation...

Incluso las personas parecen más distantes cuando las calles están envueltas en niebla, y esto es especialmente cierto hacia el margen oeste del pueblo, donde todo es más antiguo y ha cambiado muy poco con el paso de los años. Allí las personas aparecen y desaparecen entre la niebla casi sin saludar. Como si la parcial invisibilidad les proveyese una especie de licencia para ensimismarse a sus anchas. Incluso yo voy simplemente por las calles mirando y haciendo fotos, saludando —cuando lo hago— con apenas algún monosílabo que me permita permanecer en esa especie de aislamiento etéreo...

But dogs do not; they always observe me with the same sharpness, recognize me, and even greet me by wagging their tails or barking a little. I suppose that the presence of fog does not affect their senses...

Pero los perros no: ellos siempre me observan con la misma agudeza, me reconocen y hasta me saludan moviendo sus colas o ladrando un poco. Supongo que a ellos no les afecta sus sentidos la presencia de la niebla
