People who live in small towns like mine here in Venezuela have been used, since the beginning of this century, to dealing with problems and shortcomings by the ton, so that is something which has made them tougher than normal... And I write this because today in the morning I greeted a neighbor of perhaps some 80 years, and when I asked him, "And how are you?", he answered me with a somewhat gruff gesture and with an ironic smile, "Fine, despite June"... And I was on the point of answering him with a recriminatory phrase, since it still seems to me that the days we have lived recently are not such as to make jokes of this type. But immediately I braked my impulse to do that, since, despite the fact that I am a man of already 55 years, immediately there came to my mind the teaching of my mother which says, "Elders are respected," so instead of recriminating Venancio (which is our neighbor's name), I simply decided to smile a little and nod with my head and continue ahead on my way...

Las personas que viven en pueblos pequeños como el mío, aquí en Venezuela, están acostumbradas, desde comienzos de este siglo, a lidiar con problemas y carencias a por montones, así que eso es algo lo cual las ha hecho más duras de lo normal... Y escribo esto porque hoy en la mañana saludé a un vecino de quizás unos 80 años y, cuando le pregunté: «¿Y tú cómo estás?», me contestó [con] un ademán un tanto osco y con una sonrisa irónica: «Bien, a pesar de junio»... Y yo estuve a punto de contestarle con una frase recriminatoria, pues me sigue pareciendo que los días que hemos vivido recientemente no son como para hacer chistes de este tipo. Pero de inmediato frené mi impulso de hacer eso, pues, a pesar de que soy un hombre de ya 55 años, de inmediato se vino a mi mente la enseñanza de mi madre que dice: «A los mayores se les respeta», así que, en lugar de recriminar a Venancio (que así se llama nuestro vecino), simplemente decidí sonreír un poco, asentir con la cabeza y seguir adelante mi camino...

Few meters down the street, after my brief conversation with Venancio, I realized that that small listless smile with which I accepted the old man's ironic phrase was perhaps the first I had had since the afternoon of the earthquake on the past 24th. Then Venancio's response stopped seeming rude or inappropriate to me and seemed to me a gesture of resilience typical of someone who has had a hard life and now has to go through another difficult moment. Then I thanked in silence for not having recriminated Venancio and even mentally thanked him for having taught me that little lesson...

Pocos metros calle abajo, después de mi breve conversación con Venancio, me di cuenta de que aquella pequeña sonrisa desganada con la que acepté la irónica frase del anciano era quizás la primera que tenía desde la tarde del terremoto del pasado día 24. Entonces la respuesta de Venancio dejó de parecerme descortés o inadecuada y me pareció un gesto de resiliencia propio de alguien que ha tenido una vida dura y ahora le toca pasar por otro trance más. Entonces agradecí en silencio no haber recriminado a Venancio y hasta le di mentalmente las gracias por haberme enseñado esa pequeña lección...

Emotions are still running high here, but we are trying to recover the daily rhythm and learn as much as possible from what we have lived. Yesterday I talked to someone who came to the house of their relatives in our town, since their house was in La Guaira state, the most affected by everything that occurred. What that person told me regarding the already called "ground zero" is terrifying, and I confess it affected me emotionally more than I already was. But, and this is going to sound very crazy I know, after Venancio's "Fine, despite June," I feel with strength to continue ahead with fortitude... Life has strange things certainly; that "Fine, despite June" went from seeming to me an inappropriate and shocking response to serving me as support in a matter of just a few meters down the street...

Las emociones siguen a flor de piel aquí, pero estamos procurando recuperar el ritmo cotidiano y aprender lo más posible de lo vivido. Ayer conversé con alguien que se vino a la casa de sus familiares en nuestro pueblo, ya que su casa estaba en el estado La Guaira, el más afectado por todo lo ocurrido. Lo que esa persona me contó respecto a la ya llamada «zona cero» es aterrador y confieso que me afectó emocionalmente más de lo que ya estaba. Pero, y esto va a sonar muy loco, lo sé, después del «Bien, a pesar de junio» de Venancio, me siento con fuerzas para continuar adelante con entereza... La vida tiene cosas extrañas, ciertamente; ese «Bien, a pesar de junio» pasó de parecerme una respuesta inapropiada y chocante a servirme como apoyo en cuestión de apenas unos pocos metros calle abajo..
