I woke up incredibly tired; the night had been long, half of it without electricity. The absurdly high heat and humidity were also part of this bizarre night, as was the presence of enormous mosquitoes whose buzzing accompanied—or rather, drowned out—the crickets and the frogs. At home, we decided to turn off the small gasoline generator around 10:00 PM to try to get some sleep, something the noise of its engine made difficult. However, sleeping is still difficult in these conditions, at least for me, so I only had brief, intermittent slumbers punctuated by the damp sensation of sweat trickling down my temples and neck... Then, around 3:00 AM, the sudden whir of the refrigerator and air conditioner indicated that we had electricity again... But, as they say around here when things seem hopeless, "the damage is already done," and in my case, a bad night's sleep is something that affects me for the entire next day... Because of all this, I decided to postpone some commitments today and take some time to wander the town's streets around mid-morning... These are days of uncomfortable weather, as I mentioned before; the heat is intense, and the air feels like a humid, sticky mass that seems to want to suffocate you instead of oxygenating you. However, the streets here always have something to say... Whether it's the people, the simple things in the houses and kiosks, or even animals like stray cats, they're always telling a story, whether there's electricity or not, or whether the weather is pleasant, unlike what we've had these past few days... And so, these are the photos from this morning in the streets of Montalbán after a night plagued with inconveniences and a sunrise that didn't seem to improve things much...

Desperté con un cansancio enorme, la noche fue larga, la mitad de ella sin electricidad. El calor y la humedad absurdamente altos también formaron parte de esta bizarra nocturnidad, al igual que la presencia de enormes zancudos cuyo zumbido acompañaba -o mejor dicho "anulaba"- el de los grillos y el croar de las ranas... En casa decidimos apagar a las 10:00 PM el pequeño generador de gasolina cerca de las 10:00 PM para intentar dormir un poco, cosa la cual el ruido se su motor hace difícil. Sin embargo, dormir sigue siendo difícil en estas condiciones, cuando menos para mi, así que solo tuve intervalos de sueño entrecortados por la sensación húmeda de las gotas de sudor que corrían por mis sienes y cuello... Luego, cerca de las 3:00 AM el súbito sonido del refrigerador y la consola del aire acondicionado indicaron que volvíamos a tener fluido eléctrico... Pero, como dicen por aquí cuando las cosas no parecer tener remedio, "ya el mal estaba hecho" y en mi caso una noche de mal dormir es algo que me marca para todo el día siguiente... Debido a todo esto que narro, decidí posponer hoy ciertos compromisos y tomarme un rato para deambular por las calles del pueblo cerca de la mitad de mañana... Son días de clima incómodo, como ya lo dije antes, el calor es alto y el aire semeja una masa húmeda y pegajosa la cual parece querer asfixiarte en lugar de oxigenarte. Sin embargo, aquí las calles tienen siempre algo que decir... Ya sean las personas, las cosas simples de las casas y los quioscos, e incluso los animales como los gatos callejeros, siempre están contando algo haya o no haya fluido eléctrico o sea el clima agradable y no como el el estos días... Y entonces, estas son las fotos de hoy en la mañana en las calles de Montalbán después de una noche plagada de incomodidades y un amanecer que no pareció mejorar mucho las cosas...

And, truth be told, I'm not one to accompany my photos with such detailed descriptions about the hardships we experience living in small towns like this one, in the Venezuelan countryside... I know that for many, all this might seem surreal, and for others, a somewhat overused theme... But I do street photography, and often—most of the time, I think—my photos are a direct product of my thoughts. So today I made an exception and talked about hours and hours without electricity, unbearable heat and humidity, and mosquitoes that seem to scream when they're not biting my skin and stealing my blood... Because without all this, I would have woken up rested and eager to do something other than wander the streets still drowsy from a sleepless night... So, even I appear unseen in these photos of mine today and in their tiny captions...

Y, la verdad sea dicha, no soy muy de acompañar mis fotos con descripciones tan detalladas respecto a las carencias que pasamos los que vivimos en pueblos chicos como este, al interior de Venezuela... Sé que para muchos quizás todo esto parezca incluso surrealista y también para algunos otros resulte una temática un poco trillada... Pero, yo hago fotografía callejera, y muchas veces -la mayoría de las veces, creo- mis fotos son un producto directo de mis pensamientos. Así que hoy hice esta excepción y hablé de horas y más horas sin electricidad, de calores y humedades insoportables y de mosquitos que parecen gritar cuando no están picando la piel y robándome la sangre... Porque sin todo esto, hoy me hubiese despertado descansado y con ánimos de irme a hacer algo distinto a recorrer las calles aún adormilado por los estrago de una noche de mal dormir... Entonces así, incluso yo mismo aparezco sin ser visto en estas fotos mías de hoy y en sus títulos pequeñitos al pie...
