This is what it looks like descending from the town center along one of those very long, dead-end streets that lead to the northeastern edge. These are relatively new streets; most of them existed as rural roads within agricultural properties that were expropriated from their owners by the state government at the beginning of this century. Since then, neighborhoods have grown up there, founded by people from other towns, mostly brought here with the promise of decent housing and jobs. In fact, this particular street, whose photos I'm sharing today, leads to what is now the abandoned "industrial zone" of the town...

Así es como se ve descender desde el casco central del pueblo por una de esas larguísimas calles sin intersecciones, que llevan hasta las márgenes noreste. Estas son calles relativamente nuevas, la mayoría de ellas existían como caminos rurales dentro de predios agrícolas los cuales fuero expropiados a sus dueños por el gobierno estatal a principios de este siglo. Desde entonces allí evolucionaron vecindarios fundados por personas de otros pueblos, en su mayoría traídos hasta aquí bajo la promesa de darles viviendas dignas y fuentes de trabajo. De hecho, esta calle cuyas fotos comparto hoy en específico, va a dar a la hoy por hoy abandonada "zona industrial" del pueblo...

I chose a morning with extremely dense fog to do this photographic exercise, precisely because of the visual drama that the complexity of the elements present brings to these streets. With a background illuminated by the light of the sun trying to break through the thick fog, I knew it would help me take some really interesting photos. And, to be honest, I really liked the result...

Escogí una mañana con niebla extremadamente densa para hacer este ejercicio fotográfico, precisamente por el drama visual que la complejidad de elementos presente, brinda a estas calles. Cosa la cual, con un fondo iluminado por la luz del disco solar intentando atravesar la niebla espesa, sabía me serviría para hacer fotos francamente interesantes. Y, para ser sinceros, me ha gustado muchísimo el resultado...

This route took me through various places, including the outskirts of a neighborhood that some here call “The Soviet Quarter” because it consists of apartment blocks (somewhat similar to those we see on the internet in the former Soviet Union) that were part of an urban renewal project that would include its own schools, hospitals, and even shopping centers, along with the new industrial plants that had arrived in the town. And since this project was being coordinated by Russian civil engineers (we are talking about the year 2002, approximately), some jokers here had the crazy idea of calling it “El Barrio Soviético” (The Soviet Quarter), even though its official name was “Nuevo Montalbán (New Montalbán).” But those are things that happen in these small towns, I guess... Unfortunately, the project was abandoned, and today it is a real urban mess, with some buildings falling down due to faulty construction and full of families lacking basic services to an even greater extent than the rest of the town. However, people continue to try to do their best and have somehow managed to stay here...

Este recorrido me llevó a través de diversos lugares, incluso pasé por las márgenes de un vecindario llamado por algunos aquí "El Barrio Soviético" ya que se trata de bloques habitacionales (un poco parecido a los que vemos en internet en la extinta unión soviética) que formaban parte de un proyecto de renovación urbana el cual incluiría sus propias escuelas, hospitales e incluso centros comerciales junto con las nuevas plantas industriales llegadas al pueblo. Y dato que dicho proyecto estaba siendo coordinado por ingenieros civiles rusos (hablamos del año 2002 aproximadamente), a algunos bromistas aquí tuvieron la loca idea de llamarlo "El Barrio Soviético" aunque su nombre oficial era "Nuevo Montalbán", pero esas son cosas que suceden es estos pueblos pequeños creo... Lamentablemente, el proyecto fue abandonado y hoy por hoy e es un verdadero caos urbanístico, con algunos edificios cayendo por su fabricación defectuosa y repleto de familias carentes de los servicios básicos a extremos aún mayores que los del resto del pueblo. Sin embargo, las personas siguen intentando hacer lo mejor posible y de alguna manera han podido continuar aquí...

That day, I took photos until the fog cleared, and then I headed back home. This is an area of town where I find it difficult to take my usual street photos with portraits of people and nearby objects. There are no dogs or cats like in the older streets of town, so my photographic forays here are more like what I am showing today in this post. But I know that there will come a time when I will explore this area of my town more intimately, and you will surely see those photos here on #Hive in the future...

Ese día hice fotos hasta que niebla se evaporó y luego emprendí el camino de regreso a casa. Este es un área del pueblo en la cual me cuesta hacer mis típicas fotos callejeras con retratos de personas y objetos cercanos, tampoco hay perros o gatos como en las calles mas viejas del pueblo, así que mis incursiones fotográficas aquí son más como lo que estoy mostrando hoy en este post. Pero sé que habrá algún momento en el que exploraré de manera más intima esta área de mi pueblo y seguramente ustedes verán esas fotos en un futuro aquí en #Hive...
