DAY TWO "WE ARE EPHEMERAL" - (PHOTOGRAPHY STORIES)
It is the second day after the seismic event that devastated part of the central-northern region of the country. Today is the second day without smiles here. Yesterday was a day of a kind of "incredulity" regarding the magnitude of what happened, but also—at least in my case and that of my family—of feeling grateful for everyone being fine. But even that fortunate fact of everyone being safe makes one feel a certain sense of guilt, knowing that there is an unknown number of people who lost their lives, who lost everything they had, who lost family and friends; and so, all of that hurts a lot and makes us think reflectively to the point of exhaustion... "We are ephemeral" was the almost lapidary phrase let slip by our 80-year-old mother, when my sister, my brother-in-law, their daughter, my daughter, and my wife were gathered yesterday in the hallway of her house, seeking to support one another in these hard times...
Es el segundo día después del evento sísmico que devastó parte de la región centro-norte del país. Hoy es el segundo día sin sonrisas aquí. El día de ayer fue de una especie de "incredulidad" respecto a la magnitud de lo acontecido, pero también —cuando menos en mi caso y el de mi familia— de sentirnos agradecidos por estar todos bien. Pero incluso ese hecho afortunado de estar todos a salvo hace que uno sienta cierta sensación de culpa al saber que hay un número desconocido de personas que perdieron sus vidas, que perdieron todo lo que tenían, que perdieron familiares y amigos; y entonces todo eso duele un montón y nos hace pensar reflexivamente hasta el cansancio... "Somos efímeros" fue la frase casi lapidaria dejada escapar por nuestra madre de 80 años, cuando mi hermana, mi cuñado, su hija, mi hija y mi esposa nos encontrábamos ayer reunidos en el corredor de su casa en busca de apoyarnos unos a los otros en estos momentos duros...
A few minutes before our mother let slip that sentence, we had learned of the confirmed deaths of several friends and acquaintances in Caracas (the country's capital) and of the regrettable passing in Vargas State (the most affected by the disaster, apparently) of a young couple who grew up and studied always alongside some of my nieces. Learning of these regrettable events increased the feeling of astonishment and vulnerability in all of us. It is something truly terrible when this type of disaster occurs so close, because even though no physical damage or material losses have been suffered, the impact that all of this causes on an emotional level is very deep...
Pocos minutos antes de que nuestra madre dejase escapar esa sentencia, nos habíamos enterado de las muertes confirmadas de varios amigos y conocidos en Caracas (la capital del país) y del lamentable deceso en el estado Vargas (el más afectado por el desastre, al parecer) de una pareja de jóvenes que crecieron y estudiaron siempre junto a algunas de mis sobrinas. Enterarnos de estos lamentables hechos incrementó en todos nosotros la sensación de asombro y de vulnerabilidad. Es algo realmente terrible cuando este tipo de desastres ocurre tan cerca, porque aunque no se haya sufrido daño físico ni pérdidas materiales, el impacto que todo esto causa a nivel emocional es muy profundo...
All of this is a roller coaster of emotions, because so many things are happening at the same time—good heavens. For example, many people here in town, including our daughter, have organized to collect and send humanitarian aid, such as clothing, medicines, and food (even for pets) to the most affected regions. But also, at the same time, many unscrupulous people have already appeared, posing as representatives of civil organizations and wanting to deceive others to profit from donations. Nor has there been any shortage of corrupt politicians and officials wanting to confiscate donations for their own benefit. And seeing all of this happening generates impotence and frustration at a very complex level, certainly...

Todo esto sigue siendo duro, porque las noticias dolorosas siguen llegando desde las áreas más afectadas. La verdad, creo que hoy vine aquí a mi estudio no solo a trabajar en mis fotos, sino también a "refugiarme un poco en ellas"

They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape v3.7

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
