In the rural spaces of Montalbán, that moment when the sun is trying to overcome the fog is always an opportunity to observe the lights and shadows interwoven in an overwhelming dance. And then one feels moved to slow down, even stop and listen to the sounds that accompany the bucolic and timeless visions... This is a privilege, yes... The village streets may often look complicated and even ugly; but when I go to the countryside just as dawn breaks, everything seems neat and poetic, although surely ephemeral...

En los espacios campestres de Montalbán, ese momento en el que el sol está intentado superar la niebla, siempre es una oportunidad de para observar las luces y las sombras entretejidas en una danza sobre cogedora. Y entonces uno se siente movido a aminorar el paso, e incluso detenerse y sentir los sonidos que acompañan las visiones bucólicas y atemporales... Esto es un privilegio, sí... Puede que las calles del pueblo muchas veces luzcan complicadas e incluso feas; ero cuando voy al campo justo en el momento en que amanece; todo parece prolijo y poético, aunque seguramente efímero...

My father, who loved painting, poetry, and good liquor, used to say something like: "It may be the same place, it may be the same sun, but it is not always the same sunrise" and I remember that he liked to get up early and go to places where you could watch the light of dawn while drinking coffee and smoking his pipe... My father was certainly an atypical man by the standards of the town, I think because he was not born here, but arrived when he was almost forty years old and never left until he died almost half a century after his arrival... But certainly, one of the things that my father taught me to appreciate, were the sunrises...

Mi padre, a quien le gustaba pintar, la poesía y el buen licor, solía decir algo así como: "Puede que sea el mismo lugar, puede que sea el mismo sol, pero no siempre es el mismo amanecer" y recuero que le gustaba levantarse temprano e ir a lugares en donde se pudiesen observar las luces del alba mientras bebía café y fumaba su pipa... Mi padre era un ciertamente un hombre atípico para los estándares del pueblo, creo que porque él no nació aquí, sino que llegó teniendo casi cuarenta años de edad y nunca más se fue hasta que murió casi medio siglo después de su llegada... Pero ciertamente, una de las cosas que mi padre me enseñó a apreciar, fueron los amaneceres...

I, sometimes, immerse myself in these dirt and foggy roads, thinking lightly about almost nothing, writing lines in my head that perhaps I will never transcribe anywhere, understanding lights and betting on shadows, raving and smiling without having a reason... I take photos, I watch the sun trying to break through, I talk to myself, sometimes I even dare to pray, but without asking for anything, except for the need for fewer and fewer things... And it is that dawn inspires in me visions of "light luggage", of happy austerity, of silent and necessary simplicity, of understanding so as to no longer have to know anything... Do I sound strange, right?... Well, that's how it happens to me sometimes, especially in the middle of one of these dawns in which the countryside seems to compress and fill everything with miracles...

Yo, algunas veces, me sumerjo en estos caminos de tierra y niebla, pensando ligeramente en casi nada, escribiendo líneas en mi cabeza las cuales quizás nunca transcribiré a ninguna parte, entendiendo luces y apostando por sombras, desvariando y sonriendo sin tener un porqué... Hago fotos, miro el sol intentando abrirse paso, hablo solo, incluso algunas veces me atrevo a orar, pero sin pedir nada, salvo que sea el cada vez necesitar menos cosas... Y es que el amanece me inspira visiones de "equipaje ligero", de austeridad feliz, de simplicidad silente y necesaria, de entendimiento para no ya no tener que saber nada... ¿sueno extraño, verdad?... Bueno, así me pasa a veces, en especial en medio de un amanecer de estos en los que la campiña parece comprimirse y llenar todo de milagros...

And sometimes someone will pass by and look at me, stop, and ask, "What do you see?" or "Has something happened to you?" And then I simply answer, "Nothing, nothing's wrong, everything's fine." Because it's been a long time since I've ever explained to anyone that I'm "watching the sunrise," because over the years I've learned that if someone could understand that answer, they wouldn't ask; and they'd probably be watching the sunrise too...

Y a veces alguien pasa y me mira, se detiene y pregunta: ¿Qué ves? o ¿te ha sucedido algo? y entonces yo simplemente contesto: "Nada, no pasa nada, todo está bien"... Porque hace mucho tiempo ya, que no explico nunca a nadie que estoy "mirando el amanecer", porque con el paso de los años aprendí que si alguien pudiese entender esa respuesta, no preguntaría; y seguramente el mismo estuviese observando el amanecer también...
