Last week I had one of those days when it is absolutely impossible to go out to take pictures in the morning... I remember being busy doing various things all day and ending up at 5:30 PM a bit tired and wanting to take a shower. But instead of doing the latter, I took my camera and went for a walk on the outskirts of town at that hour when the sun was already almost setting on the horizon...

La semana pasada tuve uno de esos días en los que se me hace absolutamente imposible salir a hacer fotos durante la mañana... Recuerdo haber estado ocupado haciendo varias cosas pendientes durante todo el día y haber terminado a las 5:30 PM un poco cansado y queriendo tomar una ducha. Pero en lugar de hacer esto ultimo, tomé mi cámara y salí a hacer una caminata a las afueras del pueblo a esa hora en la cual el sol ya estaba casi por ponerse en el horizonte...

I walked long enough to get to some nearby forest and up part of a hill. As I walked along the dusty road I was thinking that wasn't a good idea to do this walk, as the heat was still quite perceptible and I didn't really seem to be finding much to photograph. So I ended up taking a breath of air in a road's bend and ready to return home earlier than planned... However, that what I call "my photographic mind" noticed how subtle the light was on the drought affected vegetation and I immediately thought it would be a very challenging thing to take some pictures of all this around, trying to extract something good from such a complex view.

Caminé lo suficiente para llegar a algún bosque cercano y subir parte de una colina. Mientras caminaba por el camino polvoriento iba pensando en que no había sido una buena idea hacer esta caminata, pues el calor era aún bastante perceptible y en realidad no parecía estar encontrando mucho para fotografiar. Así fue como terminé tomando un poco de aire en una curva del camino y dispuesto a retornar antes de lo previsto a mi casa... Sin embargo, eso lo cual llamo "mi mente fotográfica" se percató de cuan sutil era la luz sobre la vegetación afectada por la sequía y de inmediato pensé en que sería algo muy desafiante hacer algunas fotografías a todo esto alrededor, procurando extraer algo bueno de tan compleja visión.

After a few minutes I found myself immersed in an exquisite photographic frenzy. I was observing the most abstract and tangled of all the vegetation struggling to survive during the typical March drought. The light was changing all the time and the effort to find the right exposure parameters was quite significant. Besides, I only had my old 55-300 zoom lens with me, whose light-absorbing capacity is not the most present among its goodness... But be that as it may, I managed to get a good number of photos of a diverse character and with that exquisite complexity present in the environment.

Al cabo de pocos minutos me encontré sumergido en un exquisito frenesí fotográfico. Me dediqué a observar lo más abstracto y entreverado de toda esa vegetación en plena lucha por sobrevivir durante la sequía típica del mes de Marzo. La luz cambiaba a cada instante y el esfuerzo para encontrar parámetros de exposición adecuados era bastante significativo. Además, solo había llevado conmigo mi viejo lente zoom 55-300 cuya capacidad de absorber luz no es de lo más presente entre sus bondades.... Pero sea como sea, me las apañé para lograr una buena cantidad de fotos de carácter diverso y con esa exquisita complejidad presente en el entorno.

SEE THE BLACK AND WHITE VERSIONS...

And obviously I would have to remove the colours from all this sublime chaos of bare branches and withered foliage!... So here are, from me to you, the monochrome versions of these already dramatic (and some frankly abstract) photographs...

¡Y obviamente que tendría que quitar los colores de todo este sublime caos de ramas desnudas y follaje marchito!... Así que aquí están, de mi para ustedes, las versiones monocromáticas de estas ya de por sí dramáticas (y algunas francamente abstractas) fotografías...

This is a tricky type of photo to do in black and white from a colour JPG image. So to make them monochrome I went back in most cases to the original RAW files and used the shadows, highlights and contrast adjustments to achieve a decent result and avoid making a mess of too white skies or too dark branches...

Este es un tipo de fotos complicado para hacer en blanco y negro partiendo directo de una imagen JPG en colores. Así que para tornarlas monocromáticas volví en la mayoría delos casos a los archivos originales en RAW y usé los ajustes de sombras, iluminaciones y contraste para lograr un resultado decente y evitar hacer un desastre de cielos demasiado blancos o ramas demasiado obscuras...

Wow!... I really enjoyed editing these photos and looking at them in black and white. All those details, the lights, the shadows, the shapes... Everything takes on more relevance, volume and texture when I've removed the colours... It's hard to decide how they look best... So it's good to be able to have them both ways!...

¡Caray!... Vaya que me ha gustado llevar estas fotos y mirarlas en blanco y negro. Todos esos detalles, las luces, las sombras, las formas... Todo cobra mayor relevancia, volúmen y textura cuando le he quitado los colores... Es difícil decidir como lucen mejor... ¡Así que es bueno poder tenerlas de ambas maneras!...

_{ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.}
