AS IF IT WERE ANOTHER TOWN - (STREET PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES)

Montalbán (Carabobo, Venezuela)—the town where I have always lived—features urban areas that emerged from the town's expansion during the 1990s. These consist of neighborhoods situated on the western outskirts of the town center. Some of these areas sprang up alongside projects to create an industrial zone and sports complexes, while others originated from illegal land occupations by outsiders—settlements often encouraged by local politicians as a means to gain new voters and prolong their hold on power. As residents of the town center often remark, walking through these streets gives one the impression of being in a completely different town (hence the title of this post); yet, this area lies less than a couple of miles away from the town's oldest streets—thoroughfares that date back more than two centuries.

When I was a boy of about twelve or thirteen, I used to sneak out of middle school and come to this place with some classmates. Back then, though, there was nothing here but pastures, a few areas with tall trees where cows sought shelter from the midday sun, and many orchards growing oranges and tangerines. In fact, the whole point of our sneaking out was to come here, slip into the groves to eat some sweet oranges, and then make a run for it before the watchmen spotted us (yes, I know it was illegal, but it was the early 80s, and life worked differently here back then 😂🍊)... Everything started to change when the municipality took control of the land; the pastures began to disappear, and heavy machinery arrived—bringing with it leveled earthworks and the first construction projects. I remember it vividly, because the fun part back then was riding my bike over and watching it all unfold...

As the first factories began to spring up here—irrigation hose plants, shoe factories, citrus collection centers, and cold storage facilities, as I recall—the surrounding land also became urbanized. I remember that in the 90s, the area was simply known as "The Industrial Zone," but with the onset of economic, social, and political crises, the town's economy collapsed and the companies shut down. The area became incredibly marginalized, and people started calling it "Tocorón"—a reference to a prison in another state notorious for its danger. This happened because, once the businesses failed, individuals fleeing justice—actual criminals—sought refuge in this Montalbán neighborhood; they formed gangs that terrorized practically the entire town. In fact, as I recall, by 2017 and 2018, incidents like shootouts and summary executions were commonplace here. Back then, it would have been impossible for someone like me to walk these streets taking photos—even as early in the morning as I did today. Fortunately, however, all that changed due to the town's population exodus; the peak of this migration between 2020 and 2022 saw a large portion of the residents—especially the youth—leave. That, combined with social prophylaxis operations carried out by state law enforcement agencies, ultimately succeeded in cleaning up this area and other similar ones...

Be that as it may, the place isn't exactly pretty these days (though here in Montalbán, after so many years of decline, hardly any area is), but criminal activity has all but ceased. You can come and explore these streets that tell the story of a part of town that tried to rise up but still hasn't managed to... People here live in greater peace now, and—like so many others—they are waiting for a new opportunity to get ahead...

What an interesting story about your town. Where I live, there’s also an industrial city with many factories—I think it’s the biggest industrial city in the country—and at my high school, they call it "Tocorón Prison" or sometimes say "let's go to the pen"—meaning let's go to school, hehe. But I love my school, my friends, and my streets, just as you adore your town—sad and full of fog.
