Yesterday afternoon I suddenly fell ill. My limbs began to ache and a high fever turned me into a shivering ball of flesh and bone. My wife says that around 10:00 PM I started raving incoherently. Just at that time I received a new dose of antipyretics and slept a little. I don't really remember anything that happened during that time.

La tarde de ayer enfermé de manera repentina. Mis extremidades comenzaron a doler y una fiebre muy alta me transformó en un bolillo de carne y hueso tiritante. Mi esposa dice que cerca de las 10:00 PM comencé a delirar diciendo cosas incoherentes. Justo a esa hora recibí una nueva dosis de antipiréticos y dormí un poco. Aunque la verdad es que no recuerdo nada de lo sucedido en ese intervalo de tiempo.

One thing I do remember from my delirium, however, was imagining that I was walking through the streets of my village taking photographs and that I was accompanied by "myself, but a couple of decades older" (I confess that I look almost the same as I do now, after all, that's one of the great advantages of not being too handsome... It's almost impossible to get worse with age).

Sin embargo, algo que sí recuerdo de mi delirio, fue el haber imaginado que andaba caminando por las calles de mi pueblo haciendo fotografías y que junto a mi iba acompañándome "yo mismo, pero un par de décadas más viejo" (confieso que luzco casi igual que en estos momentos, después de todo, esa es una de las grandes ventajas de no ser demasiado guapo...¡Es casi imposible empeorar con los años).

I clearly remember "my other self" commenting while he was taking a photo whose objective I did not identify, things like: "You are a mere "OBSERVER" my dear friend, you go through the streets observing without interfering in what is going on. In a way you are taking advantage of this mania for wandering and taking photos to achieve something that few do: "Find yourself".

Recuerdo claramente a "mi otro to" comentado mientras él hacía una foto cuyo objetivo no identifiqué, cosas como: "Eres un mero "OBSERVADOR" querido amigo, vas por las calles observando sin interferir en lo que sucede. De cierta manera te estás aprovechando de esta manía de deambular y hacer fotos para lograr algo que pocos hacen: "Hallarte a ti mismo".

Talking with this "Jesus Linares from the future" has always been quite relaxing for me. Although it is an event that happens only a few times a year (I haven't suffered from fevers for about 3 years) it can also happen when I am meditating and I manage to reach a high enough level of absorption for him to appear. Oddly enough, I have never seen it as something strange. But at this point in my crazy life, what the fuck could be strange to me?

Conversar con ese Jesús Linares del futuro, siempre me ha parecido algo bastante relajante. Aunque solo trata de un evento que acontece pocas veces al año (no sufría de fiebres desde hace unos 3 años) también puede suceder cuando estoy meditando y logro alcanzar un nivel de absorción lo suficientemente alto como para que él aparezca. Curiosamente, nunca lo he visto como algo extraño. Pero ¿A estas alturas de mi loca vida qué carajos podría parecerme extraño?.

Analysing this statement by my "alter ego**" - can I call him that? - it seems to me that there is a lot of truth in it and it is perhaps something that applies perfectly to my daily activity as a street photographer and to my obsession to carry it out almost always in "this tiny handful of streets of a village plunged into oblivion". I have friends who, in a very well-intentioned way, often say things like: "You take very good photos, go to other towns and take them there, go to the cities and explore new horizons".... Then, at first I tell them to fuck off without giving too many explanations (yes, I am not someone with a totally pleasant character, I admit it). However, almost immediately, I usually correct my attitude and explain to them crazy things like: "I don't take photographs for the photographs themselves, I take photographs because of what they do for me and that's what a handful of streets are good for"... In fact, sometimes I have streets to spare!

Analizando esta afirmación de mi "alter ego" ¿acaso puedo llamarlo así?, me parece que hay mucho de cierto en ella y es quizás algo que aplica perfectamente a mi actividad cotidiana como fotógrafo de calles y a mi obsesión por llevarla a cabo casi siempre en "este minúsculo puñado de calles de un pueblo sumido en el olvido". Tengo amigos que, de una manera muy bien intencionada, suelen decir cosas como: "Haces muy buenas fotos, ve a otros pueblos y hazlas allá, ve a las ciudades y explora nuevos horizontes"... Entonces, de primer momento les mando al carajo sin dar demasiadas explicaciones (sí, no soy alguien de carácter totalmente agradable, lo reconozco). Sin embargo, casi de inmediato, suelo corregir mi actitud y explicarles cosas muy locas como: "No hago fotografías por las fotografías en sí, yo hago fotografías por lo que ellas hacen por mi y para esto me sirven un puñado de calles"... ¡De hecho, a veces me sobran calles!.

I have recently passed my fifties and with that many things have lost relevance for me. Not that I am a consummate nihilist or a Bukowsky worshipper, but over time I have learnt to "let go" and live simply enough to sometimes seem indifferent to many everyday events considered critical by those around me... This perhaps makes me a "Selfish Observer" (let's see what my "future self" has to say about this when we meet again in my rational-minded absences).

He pasado de largo la cincuentena recientemente y con eso muchas cosas han terminado de perder relevancia para mi. No es que sea un nihilista consumado ni un adorador de Bukowsky pero sí con el tiempo he aprendido a "dejar ir" y vivir de manera lo suficientemente simple como para a veces parecer indiferente ante muchos sucesos cotidianos considerados críticos por los de mi entorno... Esto quizás me convierte en un "Observador egoista" (veamos que tiene que decir mi "yo futuro" al respecto cuando volvamos a toparnos entre mis ausencias de mente racional).

And as a final comment to this "strange handful of written lines" let me assure you that: "I tend to come and go about my convictions in an unpredictable way", so it is possible that today I am believing I am a "simple observer" and the day after tomorrow I write a bunch of lines concerning my approach to social justice, human needs and the like... Perhaps my only stable attitude has to do with my constant inner search, but that is a complex and much more intricate (or not?) issue. So maybe one day we can talk a bit about it, but not today.

Y como comentario final a este "extraño puñado de lineas escritas" me permito asegurar que: "Suelo ir y venir sobre mis convicciones de manera impredecible", así que es posible que hoy esté creyendo ser un "simple observador" y pasado mañana escriba un montón de lineas relativas a mi enfoque de justicia social, las necesidades humanas y cosas por el estilo.... Quizás mi única actitud estable tenga que veer con mi constante búsqueda interna, pero eso es un tema complejo y mucho más intrincado (¿o no?). Así que quizás algún día podamos conversar un poco al respecto, pero no hoy.
