Maybe "Macro & close-up photography" is a title which is a bit of an understatement for this publication. Well, like almost everything I do, these photographs were taken in the street and to be more precise, they were taken in the central square of my village on the old sawn trunk of a huge tree that was there until 2020 when it fell due to a illness which withered it, putting an end to its long existence of more than 250 years during which it was an integral part of the image of our village (even forming part of the village's shield of arms and flag)... This was a great loss for everyone in the village, as many of us grew up playing under the shade of this beautiful tree. We used to take shelter there during the occasional downpours on our way home from school and even fell in love sitting on the benches over which it cast its shadow... So these photos also have a street component and a very emotional one for me, as I could say that I am "photographing the skeleton of an old tree friend"...

Puede que "Macro & close-up fotografía" sea un título el cual se queda un tanto corto para esta publicación. Pues, como casi todo lo que hago, estas fotografías fueron hechas en la calle y para ser más preciso, fueron hechas en la plaza central de mi pueblo sobre el viejo tronco aserrado de un enorme árbol que estuvo allí hasta 2020 cuando cayó debido a una enfermedad la cual lo marchitó poniendo punto final a su larga existencia de más de 250 años durante los cuales formó parte integral de la imagen de nuestro pueblo (llegando incluso a formar parte del escudo de armas de esta localidad)... Esta fue una gran perdida para todos en el pueblo, pues muchos crecimos jugando bajo la sombra de este hermoso árbol. Allí nos resguardábamos durante los ocasionales aguaceros al venir de nuestra escuela e incluso nos enamoramos sentados en las bancas sobre las cuales proyectaba su sombra... Así que estas fotos tienen también un componente callejero y muy emotivo para mi, pues podría decirse que estoy "fotografiando la osamenta de un viejo amigo árbol"...

On the other hand, leaving my house on Easter Saturday morning (I took these photos earlier today) and going to the town's central square to spend more than an hour sitting, lying, kneeling and standing around this dry log, has not exactly helped to change the general opinion held by the vast majority of my neighbours, which could be summed up as "That guy is totally crazy"... And I was talking to that old log for all that time, loudly!... So for the people who were coming out of the parish church, this must have been something quite strange... But believe me, I needed to take these pictures. This dry trunk is the last physical witness of that huge and beloved tree. The municipality had removed all the remains except this one (I don't really know why, but they did) so I wanted to take these photos before this trunk was no longer there...

Por otra parte, salir de mi casa durante la mañana del sábado de pascua (hice estas fotos hoy temprano) y dirigirme a la plaza central del pueblo para dedicarme a estar más de una hora sentado, acostado, hincado y parado alrededor de este tronco seco, no ha sido precisamente algo lo cual haya contribuido a cambiar la opinión generalizada que tienen la gran mayoría de mis vecinos, la cual podría resumirse en "Ese tipo está totalmente loco"... ¡Y además estuve hablando con ese viejo tronco durante todo ese tiempo y en voz alta!... Así que para las personas las cuales salían de la iglesia parroquial, esto tuvo que haber sido algo bastante extraño... Pero créanme, necesitaba hacer estas fotos. Este tronco seco es el ultimo testigo físico de aquel enorme y amado árbol. La municipalidad había retirado todos los restos menos este (no sé realmente porqué, pero así lo hicieron) así que quería hacer estas fotos antes de que este tronco ya no estuviese allí...

One thing that pleasantly surprised me was the great diversity of shapes, lines and textures that I found in this piece of dead wood. In addition, the sunlight was direct but attenuated by some low dense clouds. This provided a very adequate luminosity for this type of photographic work, which was done with a Tokina ATX-PRO 100 mm macro lens, an ideal optical piece for this type of photos both for its sharpness and its superb depth of field and excellent ability to absorb light..... As is almost always the case with photographs: "It was as if everything conspired to make me take them"...

Algo lo cual me sorprendió gratamente, fue la gran diversidad de formas, lineas y texturas que encontré en este trozo de madera muerta. Además, la luz solar era directa pero atenuada por algunas nubes poco densas. Esto brindó una luminosidad muy adecuada para este tipo de trabajo fotográfico, el cual fue realizado con un lente macro Tokina ATX-PRO de 100 mm, una pieza óptica ideal para este tipo de fotos tanto por su nitidez como por su soberbia profundidad de campo y excelente capacidad de absorber luz.... Como casi siempre sucede con las fotografías: "Fue como si todo conspirase para que las hiciese"...

SEE THE BLACK AND WHITE VERSIONS...

And of course here are the monochrome versions of these photos.... It makes sense for me to want to process these black and white photos as well. However, I have to be honest (despite my decided preference for monochrome photos) and say that this time I find the colour versions more visually striking... I felt that colour is important for photos based on natural wood, as the chromaticism of the wood itself is very interesting and is part of the very character of the material. However, it is not that these monochrome versions look unattractive... They also have their own charm and here they are for you!...

Y por supuesto ¡Aquí están las versiones monocromáticas de estas fotos!... Es algo lógico para mi querer procesar también esta fotos viradas al blanco y negro. Sin embargo, tengo que ser sincero (a pesar de mi decidida preferencia por hacer fotos monocromáticas) y decir que esta vez me parecen visualmente más impactantes las versiones a color... Me ha parecido que el color es importante para las fotos basadas en madera al natural, pues el cromatismo propio de esta es muy interesante y forma parte del carácter mismo del material. Sin embargo, no se trata de que estas versiones monocromáticas luzcan poco atractivas...¡También tienen su encanto y aquí están para ustedes!...

Although, on reflection, even in black and white there is a level of abstraction perceptible when looking at each photo... don't you think? I made an effort to "think about these photos" in a frankly abstract way and focused on highlights such as lines and textures. This seems to have yielded a good result.

Aunque pensándolo bien, así en blanco y negro hay un nivel de abstracción perceptible al observar cada foto ¿No les parece?... Hice un esfuerzo por "pensar estas fotos" de una manera francamente abstracta y enfocándome en características resaltantes como lineas y texturas. Al parecer esto dio un buen resultado.

BONUS SHOT (The trunk as it is today)

_{ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.}
