The Lit Cross

I think the most special thing about this post I'm writing is that it's about an unforgettable hike for me, and it was on a Wednesday. My gym bro and I decided to do some hiking, since we'd only done strength training that morning, but there were two people who really needed to connect with nature to clear their heads after what had been a stressful day for them, and without hesitation, we invited my wife and our mutual friend to climb Ávila Mountain with us. I say it was an unforgettable experience because, despite being the same place we always go, this time it was the first time for one of the participants...

Creo que lo más especial de esta publicación que estoy escribiendo es que se trata de una caminata inolvidable para mí, además de que fue un Miércoles. Mi gym bro y yo decidimos hacer algo de senderismo, ya que solo hicimos entrenamiento de fuerza esa mañana, pero había dos personas que necesitaban realmente conectar con la naturaleza para aliviar los pensamientos que los ataban a un día que hasta el momento había sido estresante para ellos, y sin dudarlo invitamos a mi esposa y nuestro amigo en común a subir la montaña del Ávila junto a nosotros. Digo que fue una experiencia inolvidable porque a pesar de ser el mismo lugar de siempre, en esta ocasión sería la primera vez de uno de los asistentes...

I've been hiking for over a year now, and El Ávila always offers new trails to discover. That Wednesday evening was truly special, a day of firsts. Besides our friend climbing for the first time, we discovered some shortcuts along the way and interesting park ranger points, where there's even natural drinking water; in my opinion, it was a great find 😅 We didn't think we'd be doing any more hiking midweek, but the guys were really excited, and as dusk began to fall, we noticed the Ávila Cross lit up in the distance. Douglas and I had been wanting to hike up at night just to see the illuminated cross, so we encouraged the newcomers to make that dream a reality.

Tengo más de un año haciendo senderismo y El Ávila siempre nos ofrece nuevos caminos por descubrir. Ese anochecer de Miércoles realmente fue especial, un día de primeras veces. Además de que nuestro amigo subía por primera vez, descubrimos algunos atajos en el camino y puntos guarda parques de interés, donde incluso hay agua natural para beber; en mi opinión, fue un gran hallazgo 😅 No pensamos que subiríamos más en la mitad de semana, pero los chicos estaban muy animados y al comenzar el atardecer, a lo lejos notamos que se encendió la Cruz del Ávila. Douglas y yo teníamos tiempo con ganas de subir en la noche solo para apreciar la Cruz encendida, así que motivamos a los nuevos para poder hacer ese sueño realidad.

The sun began to set early, but it gifted us with beautiful colors as it passed through the clouds on the horizon, just before disappearing behind the mountains to the west of the city. We were already quite high on our route, so the temperature began to drop, making the hike more pleasant. We were surprised that our friend climbed so far, it being his first time, but seeing the lit cross was worth it. We always sing about it in our Christmas carols, so we had to experience being so close to it. There wasn't a full moon, but a very thin crescent was beginning to appear, making the sky even more beautiful. Before the sun set, the first stars also began to appear.

El sol comenzó a ocultarse temprano, pero nos regaló hermosos colores cuando pasaba entre las nubes del horizonte, justo antes de ocultarse tras las montañas que se ven al oeste de la ciudad. Ya estábamos muy altos en nuestra ruta, así que comenzó a descender la temperatura, y eso hizo más grata la caminata. Nos sorprendió mucho que nuestro amigo subiera tanto, siendo esta su primera vez, pero ver la cruz encendida valía la pena, siempre cantamos sobre ella en nuestro repertorio navideño, así que teníamos que vivir la experiencia de tenerla tan cerca. No había luna llena, pero se comenzaba a ver una uña muy delgada de luna creciente, haciendo que el cielo se viera aún más hermoso. Antes de que se ocultara el sol, también se comenzaron a notar las primeras estrellas.

In the midst of the deep darkness, brought on by the night and the abundance of trees halfway up the mountain, we began to see the light emanating from the Ávila Cross. The goal was near, and we took the last shortcut to reach it. It was wonderful to see it for the first time from up here, as we've been admiring it for years, but from the city center. The cross is tall, and it's not illuminated from the base; we realized that at that moment. We've climbed here several times, but never like that day, when we truly sat down to appreciate the beauty of the surroundings and shared some cookies. It took us a long time, but the hike was worth it. We understood that it's only lit in December, but here we are, almost in March, and it's still shining brightly. Strange things always happen in this country 😅 but we have to take advantage of what is good...

En medio de una gran oscuridad, provocada por la noche y la abundancia de árboles que hay a mitad de la montaña, se comenzó a apreciar la luz proveniente de la Cruz del Ávila. La meta estaba cerca y tomamos el último atajo para lograrla. Fue muy grata verla por primera vez desde aquí arriba, y es que tenemos años siendo espectadores de la misma pero desde el centro de la ciudad. La cruz es alta, y no está iluminada desde la base, de eso nos dimos cuenta en ese momento. Hemos subido varias veces hasta aquí, pero nunca como ese día, cuando realmente nos sentamos a apreciar la belleza del entorno y aprovechamos de compartir algunas galletas. Tardamos mucho tiempo, pero valió la pena la caminata. Teníamos entendido que está encendida solo en el mes de Diciembre, pero aquí estamos, casi llegando a Marzo y sigue brillando en lo alto. En este país siempre ocurren cosas extrañas 😅 pero hay que aprovechar lo que sí es beneficioso...

As we started descending, not only the mountain but the rest of the city was enveloped in a thick fog. That might be why I'm feeling sick right now 😅 because it was after this hike up in the mountains that I lost my voice, but the experience was truly worth it. We enjoyed the entire walk in the dark, yet somehow illuminated by the reflection of the city lights on the white fog. Of course, we're already planning to go back up together, this time on the first full moon of March, with other friends who saw our posts on social media and want to join us. But whatever happens, the first time always stays in our minds and hearts, and only those of us who were there truly feel the joy of having experienced such a wonderful hike 🙏

Cuando comenzamos a bajar, no solo la montaña, sino el resto de la ciudad se llenó de una densa neblina. Es posible que por eso estoy enfermo justo ahora 😅 ya que después de esta caminata en las alturas fue que me quedé sin voz, pero realmente la experiencia valió la pena. Disfrutamos de todo el camino en la oscuridad, peor en cierta forma alumbrados con el reflejo de las luces de la ciudad sobre la niebla blanca. Claro que ya estamos planificando volver a subir juntos, peor esta vez en la primera noche de luna llena de Marzo y junto a otros amigos que vieron nuestros estados en la redes sociales y quieren sumarse al paseo; pero pase lo que pase, la primera vez siempre se queda en nuestras mentes y corazones, y solo los que estuvimos ahí sentimos la dicha de haber experimentado un gran paseo 🙏
