The Comuna 13 of Medellín | From Violence to Art | The Cradle of Pablo Escobar

A month ago I had the opportunity to visit Colombia, my neighboring country, specifically the city of Medellin, a new place that I can add to my adventures thanks to music. This city of Antioquia and its surroundings are very popular in the world, especially for the place I want to share with you today. It is the Comuna 13 of San Javier, known for being the birthplace of Pablo Escobar, one of the richest criminals in the world for being the leader of the manufacture and distribution of cocaine.

Hace un mes tuve la oportunidad de conocer Colombia, mi país vecino, específicamente la ciudad de Medellín, un nuevo lugar que puedo añadir a mis aventuras gracias a la música. Esta ciudad de Antioquia y su al rededores son muy populares en el mundo, especialmente por el lugar que les quiero compartir hoy. Se trata de la Comuna 13 de San Javier, conocida por ser la cuna de Pablo Escobar, uno de los criminales más ricos del mundo por ser el líder de la fabricación y distribución de cocaína.

There are many reasons why the Comuna 13 was the most violent neighborhood in Latin America for many years; in fact before arriving you can see a large wall with photographs of people who disappeared during the roughest time of this place, but over time it has become a neighborhood where art is praised and the place with more tourist attraction for those who come to Medellin. From the moment you arrive at the entrance you are greeted by several tour guides, many of them lived during the most complex era of the site and they will explain every detail during your visit.

Son muchos los motivos por los cuales la Comuna 13 fue el barrio más violento de todo América Latina por muchos años; de hecho antes de llegar puedes ver un gran muro con fotografías de las personas desaparecidas durante la época más ruda de este lugar, pero con el tiempo ha pasado a ser un barrio donde se enaltece el arte y el lugar con más atractivo turístico para quienes vienen a Medellín. Desde que llegas a la entrada te reciben varios guías turísticos, incluso muchos de ellos vivieron la era más compleja del sitio y te van explicando cada detalle durante tu visita.

At first glance, the most attractive and striking thing about the place is its great color, especially the large murals. Everything is full of vivid colors everywhere you turn. There is a lot of commerce, whether referring to the Comuna, the history or the city of Medellín as such; everyone finds something to show or sell. It is a big neighborhood and the whole walk is uphill, but we don't have to worry about getting tired, as they have placed escalators to go up and enjoy every shop and all the graffiti and urban artists.

A primera vista, lo más atractivo y llamativo del lugar es su gran colorido, especialmente los grandes murales. Todo está muy cargado de colores vivos a cualquier parte que volteas. Hay mucho comercio, ya sea referente a la Comuna, la historia o a la ciudad de Medellín como tal; todos encuentran algo que mostrar o vender. Es un barrio grande y todo el camino es cuesta arriba, pero no debemos preocuparnos por el cansancio, ya que han colocado escaleras eléctricas para subir y disfrutar de cada local y de todos los grafitis y artistas urbanos.

At the beginning of the tour I thought I would not be very impressed, since living in Caracas I know perfectly well what are the neighborhoods and so many houses accumulated in small or large hills, but it was not so, it is not the same, it is really nice place and the camaraderie of the people who visit these streets impressed. Al inicio del tour pensé que no me impresionaría mucho, ya que viviendo en Caracas conozco perfectamente lo que son los barrios y tantas casas acumuladas en pequeños o grandes cerros, pero no fue así, no es lo mismo, realmente es bonito el lugar y la camaradería de las personas que visitan impresionadas estas calles. Es un sitio para caminar, pero a la vez para detenerse y detallar cada dibujo y mensajes dejados entre las paredes y las escaleras, que por cierto hacen referencia a los sucesos ocurridos en el pasado. Igual existen muchas exhibiciones de otros temas como artistas famosos, deporte, animé y demás.

As we went deeper into the Comuna 13 we discovered some sculptures, although they were in the distance or on the terrace of some businesses, but since we could not enter all of them I photographed and admired them from afar. At the highest part was when we sat down to rest and enjoy a delicious coconut lemonade and we approached the viewpoint to appreciate the beauty of Medellin from the top. A beautiful city with very tall buildings, neighborhoods and surrounded by mountains from the four cardinal points. The sun was beating hard, but we were pleased to have known a place with so much history of our continent.

A medida que nos adentramos en la Comuna 13 fuimos descubriendo algunas esculturas, aunque estaban a lo lejos o en la terraza de algunos negocios, pero ya que no podíamos entrar a todos los fotografié y admiré desde lejos. En la parte más alta fue cuando nos sentamos a descansar disfrutar de una rica limonada de coco y nos acercamos al mirador para apreciar la belleza de Medellín desde lo más alto. Una ciudad hermosa con edificios muy altos, barrios y rodeada de montañas desde los cuatro puntos cardinales. El sol golpeaba fuerte, pero nos sentimos complacidos de haber conocido un lugar con tanta historia de nuestro continente.

If one day you visit Colombia and have the opportunity to pass through Medellin you already know that you can not miss a little walk through the Comuna 13. Walk through its streets stroll through history and savor the triumph of life. There are a lot of people, but it is a very safe and well-kept place to keep its spaces suitable for visitors. From the moment I stepped on these streets I knew it was worth visiting this country. What a cool place!. I am in Medellin...

Si un día visitan Colombia y tienen la oportunidad de pasar por Medellín ya saben que no pueden perderse un pequeño paseo por la Comuna 13. Caminar por sus calles pasearse por la historia y saborear el triunfo de la vida. Hay mucha gente, pero es un lugar bastante seguro y bien cuidado para mantener sus espacios adecuados para los visitantes. Desde que pisé estas calles supe que había valido la pena visitar este país. ¡Que chimba!. Estoy en Medellín...
