Our Lady of Mercy Church | Eng-Esp | Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes (Caracas)

If there is a difficult church façade to photograph in the city of Caracas, Venezuela, it would be this one, the Church of Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes... Hello friends and lovers of design and architecture. I have thought a lot about sharing this post in this community, because although it is about admiring the beauty of this temple, there is a lot that influences not to have the best pictures, but at the same time it is worth to make it known.

Si hay una fachada de iglesia difícil de fotografiar en la ciudad de Caracas, Venezuela, esa sería esta, la Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes... ¡Hola amigos y amantes del diseño y la arquitectura!. He pensado mucho si compartir este post en esta comunidad, porque aunque se trata de admirar la belleza de este templo, hay mucho que influye para no tener las mejores fotografías, pero al mismo tiempo vale la pena darlo a conocer.

Its history is very eventful and interesting. It can be said that it was founded in 1614, but it did not look like the image I show on the cover. At that time people made a first wooden construction. This building fell down in 1.641 with an earthquake. Since then, the reconstructions fell down in 1766 and 1812, never 100 years passed when some earthquake finished with the building.

La historia de la misma es muy accidentada e interesante. Se puede decir que su fundación fue en 1.614, pero no lucía como en la imagen que les muestro en la portada. Para ese tiempo las personas hicieron una primera construcción de madera. Edificación que se cayó en 1.641 con un terremoto. Desde ahí, las reconstrucciones se cayeron en 1.766 y en 1.812, nunca pasaban ni 100 años cuando algún sismo acababa con la edificación.

More similar to how I show it in the photo and with the current structure that is neoclassical style and the base of the temple is rectangular, was built in 1857, and yet another earthquake in 1900 caused heavy damage, but it is the version that has been maintained over time and was even declared a national historic monument.

Más parecido a como la muestro en la foto y con la estructura actual que es de estilo neoclásico y la base del templo es rectangular, fue construida en 1.857, y aún así un nuevo sismo en 1.900 causó fuertes daños, pero es la versión que más se ha mantenido en el tiempo y hasta fue declarada monumento histórico nacional.

Definitely the pictures I liked the most were the ones I took at the entrance of the church of the two statues that are there. They are totally white and despite being in front of an avenue, being in their presence transmitted feelings of peace, loneliness and nostalgia.

Definitivamente las fotografías que más me gustaron fueron las que tomé a la entrada de la iglesia de las dos estatuas que ahí se encuentran. Son totalmente blancas y a pesar de estar frente a una avenida, estar en presencia de ellas me transmitió sentimientos de paz, soledad y nostalgia.

My girl and I had nine years passing in front of this church in the center of Caracas, but we could never enter, and not because of us, but because it was always closed. With time we understood that they took great care of it and its opening hours are very exclusive because of all the history it has, so we had great expectations the first time we were able to enter, which was last Holy Week.

Mi chica y yo teníamos nueve años pasando frente a esta iglesia en el centro de Caracas, pero nunca pudimos entrar, y no por nosotros, sino que siempre estaba cerrada. Con el tiempo entendimos que la cuidaban mucho y sus horarios de apertura son muy exclusivos por toda la historia que tiene, así que teníamos mucha expectativa la primera vez que pudimos entrar que fue la última Semana Santa.

In the picture below you can see the lights on, but I will never forget our first impression when we entered. For a catholic church it seemed very dark to us, it is super tall and all the walls and ceiling are concrete and its color is also concrete. It is a bit difficult for the sound to travel. I felt the impression of entering an old castle like the ones you are used to see on TV where candles and candelabras gave the touch of illumination.

En la fotografía que les muestro aquí abajo se pueden ver las luces prendidas, pero nunca olvidaré nuestra primera impresión cuando entramos. Para ser una iglesia católica nos pareció muy oscura, es súper alta y todas las paredes y el techo son de concreto y su color también de concreto. Es un poco difícil para que viaje el sonido. Sentí la impresión de entrar a un castillo antiguo como los que se acostumbran a ver en la televisión donde las velas y candelabros daban el toque de iluminación.

One of our big surprises in this temple was to discover that at the right exit there is a space where a small tribute is paid to the Virgin of Lourdes, she even has her own grotto. It was very meaningful to me, since she is the patron saint of earthquakes, and wow, this church has gone through some great catastrophic moments in its infrastructure with this theme.

Una de nuestras grandes sorpresas en este templo fue descubrir que a la salida derecha hay un espacio donde se rinde un pequeño tributo a la Virgen de Lourdes, incluso tiene su propia gruta. Fue muy significativo para mí, ya que ella es la patrona de los terremotos, y vaya que esta iglesia ha pasado por grandes momentos catastróficos en su infraestructura con este tema.

It is undoubtedly one of those holy sites that I recommend visiting in the central area of Caracas. I love the infrastructure of catholic churches, and I find in them much more than the beauty of their designs. As I said at the beginning, there are many things that prevented me from taking great pictures, especially the darkness on the day I went, but I used my Tecno Pova II to capture these images and I did not edit them. Indiscutiblemente es uno de esos sitios santos que recomiendo visitar en el casco central de Caracas. Yo amo la infraestructura de las iglesias católicas, y encuentro en ellas mucho más que la belleza de sus diseños. Como les dije al inicio, hay muchas cosas que me impidieron tomar grandes fotografías, sobretodo la oscuridad en el día que fui, igual usé mi Tecno Pova II para capturar estas imágenes y no les realicé ninguna edición.
