Maiquetia International Airport

Greetings to all Hive's friends and lovers of Architecture and Design! Today I will share part of the architecture of a wonderful place, Maiquetia International Airport, a place that for many means the beginning of an adventure and for others the end of a stage. I have been lucky enough to visit it several times, some times happier than others, either for travel reasons or to say goodbye to a good friend who migrates, but either way it is a place that moves feelings and that I admire for its beauty.

I am not very knowledgeable about airports; besides the main airport in my country I have also known some more, like one in Medellin, one in Granada, Santiago de Compostela and the great Barajas Airport in Madrid, but with my little experience I dare to say that they are all very different and maybe right now this one is not the most elegant for several reasons, but it stands out for a very Venezuelan peculiarity, the art of Carlos Cruz Diez with his colorful mosaics that are almost heritage in my country, especially in the main hallway of the airport where it extends along the place and ends with a popular mural at both ends. The traveler's photo site par excellence.

Like all airports it is a very large place, with many small businesses around the edges. It has the area where people do the paperwork with the airlines towards the corners, away from the main hallway, and in the middle of the place escalators that takes you to the top floor that I will show you later. On the ground floor there is also a fast food area still accessible to the general public and very close to the immigration area, where only those who are going to travel can enter. I repeat that each of these places is very large, to receive many people.

What can be appreciated from the uncovered walls, the big columns and the ceiling are made of concrete and that gray color becomes very attractive in contrast with the natural light, the light bulbs and the colorful art that wanders throughout the main hallway, besides finding our tricolor flag on top of several areas of the airport. I insist that it does not look very modern like others I have known, but the truth is that it does not need anything, it is a perfect place where you can spend the whole day or even longer, although in the waiting area for flights is much more luxurious.

The upstairs is charming, and there are no people waiting in long lines for paperwork. Upstairs there are also many businesses such as coffee and food fair, but you also find lots and lots of art in every corner and you can even pray in a small chapel, the Chapel of the Virgin of Loreto. There are also areas to sit and rest, which is very necessary because you can spend hours touring the airport. In general all the art is focused on the beauty of Venezuela, perfect for those visiting from abroad.

These last pictures have more elegant areas, and it is of the boarding area, where there are also food stores, all kinds of stores and very comfortable seats for waiting for the flight time. In order to complete this post I have joined photographs that I captured from various areas of the airport in my last three visits since March 2024 until a few days ago when I accompanied a great friend who was leaving the country. I am only missing pictures of the migration area, but there is a lot of security there and I prefer not to expose myself, besides looking like in all the airports I have met so far. I hope you liked my publication and that you marvel a little with the beautiful artistic spaces of the Maiquetía Airport in La Guaira, Venezuela.

Greetings brother, elegant enough, of course speaking of airports in the world we see impressive airports, if this is very elegant, I like those parts where there is some artistic reference within the enclosures and its mosaic on the floor is great.

Undoubtedly, Cruz Diez's art changed the face of the airport. The elegance and
colorful floors give it that touch of distinction that makes the environment so pleasant.

I have the virtue of living surrounded by his art, even the new tricolor jacket we got was designed by him. It is impressive what he does and to see it on a large scale at the airport is a source of national pride. Thanks brother, look at my jacket!

Hey, too bad your pc is like that my friend, I hope you can solve that soon because you are a wonderful content creator. That Evil Owl can't keep destroying everything at home. Something has to be done hahahahaha... Hopefully one day I have to step on this artistic floor and my destination is Argentina, it's a dream for me. I don't know in which area you live, but I would love to meet you sometime ❤️

Your detailed descriptions and the emotional touch really brought it to life for me. Airports do have a way of stirring up memories, and I loved how you highlighted the art of Cruz Diez—it sounds truly iconic. Also, it’s great how you showed both the beauty and functionality of the space.

Thank you very much for your words, I was very excited to read them. It is impossible not to feel a national pride to see a living work of art, being part of our day when we walk through this beautiful place, in fact I fall short with so much beauty. I am very grateful to you 🙏

Yes Belkys, the colors are beautiful and that is what distinguishes it from other major airports in the world. I know I speak as if I knew many countries hahaha, but no one has the work of Cruz Diez so beautiful in every corner!...
