Earthquakes in Venezuela!
I must start this post by telling you that I am fine, as are my family and coworkers, but I find the whole situation truly overwhelming when considering the magnitude of what happened in my country last Wednesday, June 24th. Yes, we are fine because we are alive, but many people lost loved ones or even their homes and I am speaking of people very close to me. I thank God for the opportunity to be here, recounting these events and sharing these photographs; personally, I have only been affected by the dust I’ve breathed in over the last few days, since I suffer from severe allergies and by the psychological toll, as it took me three days to finally get some sleep. Yet, I have the blessing of sleeping in my own home, right beside my wife. In our specific case, I believe God has given us a mission to help those who are truly suffering, which is why you haven't seen much from me here lately...
Debo comenzar esta publicación diciéndoles que estoy bien, al igual que mi familia y mis compañeros de trabajo, pero esto me parece totalmente impresionante entendiendo la magnitud de lo que ocurrió el pasado Miércoles 24 de Junio en mi país... Sí, estamos bien porque estamos vivos, pero muchos perdieron a alguien o incluso sus viviendas, y les estoy hablando de personas muy cercanas a mí. Agradezco a Dios la oportunidad que nos da de estar aquí, narrando estos hechos y compartiendo estas fotografías, porque en mi caso particular solo estoy afectado por todo el polvo que he respirado estos días, ya que soy muy alérgico, y la parte psicológica, ya que tres días después fue que pude conciliar el sueño, pero con la dicha de poder dormir en mi propia casa, al lado de mi mujer. En nuestro caso particular, creo que Dios nos dio la misión de ayudar a quienes realmente están afectados, motivos por el cual no me han leído mucho por acá estos días...
It was six in the evening, and the house was noisy. The washing machine was running, I was cooking arepas, and my wife had just turned on the Brazil vs. Scotland match, with the volume cranked up so I could hear it from the kitchen, so when the Google alert went off, we had no idea what it was; I told her the sound was coming from the soccer stadium on TV. Moments later, we felt the ground begin to shake, gently at first, yet with distinct force, strong enough to make us instinctively embrace each other in the bedroom doorway. It was a good thing we did, because the fury of nature soon began to shake the building with such brutal intensity that, even though we didn't say a word at the time, we were certain the structure was about to collapse.

La lavadora estaba encendida, estaba cocinando unas arepas y mi esposa acababa de poner el juego de Brasil vs Escocia, con mucho volumen para que yo escuchara desde la cocina, así que cuando sonó la alerta de Google jamás imaginamos lo que era, yo le dije que era un sonido que venía desde el estadio de futbol en el televisor. No pasó mucho tiempo cuando sentimos que comenzó a temblar levemente, pero con contundencia, la fuerza suficiente como para que automáticamente nos abracemos bajo el marco de la puerta de nuestra habitación, y que bueno que lo hicimos, porque la furia de la naturaleza comenzó a sacudir con una fuerza tan brutal que aunque no dijimos nada en ese momento, estábamos seguros que el edificio estaba por desplomarse.
As soon as the shaking subsided, I felt the need to unplug our appliances, and the first thing that surprised us was that absolutely nothing in our home had fallen to the floor, even though we live on the top floor. There is an explanation for this: if you read my posts regularly, you’ll know I’ve mentioned before that our apartment is tiny, literally that small caretaker’s room found on the rooftops of most buildings and such small spaces are actually ideal during earthquakes. On the other hand, the moment the shaking stopped, all we could see from the windows were towering clouds of dust, accompanied by the deafening sound of thousands of people screaming. We knew right away that, despite our own stroke of luck, what had just occurred was TRAGIC.
Apenas se calmó el temblor tuve la necesidad de desconectar nuestros electrodomésticos, y lo primero que nos sorprendió fue que en nuestra casa no se cayó al suelo absolutamente nada, aunque vivimos en el último piso. Eso tiene una explicación, si me lees regularmente, sabrás que en algún momento les dije que nuestro apartamento es muy pequeño., literalmente ese pequeño cuarto de conserjería que tienen todos los edificios en la terraza, y espacios tan pequeños realmente son recomendables en terremotos... Por otro lado, justo cuando dejó de temblar lo único que se veía desde las ventanas eran altas nubes de polvo y el sonido ensordecedor de miles de personas gritando. Siempre supimos que a pesar de nuestra suerte lo que acababa de ocurrir había sido algo TRAGICO.
I put on a pair of shoes while trying to call my mom, since my family lives in another city, but my wife made me realize we needed to get out of the building quickly. We live on the fourth floor, and I didn't sense any immediate danger beyond the screams of some neighbors who were also heading down; even as I ran down the stairs, I kept trying to call my mom. When I reached the street, the first things I saw were rubble amidst the dust, people running and screaming, and cars speeding along as if the streets weren't packed with pedestrians. I was terrified, but I didn't let go of my wife, and I kept trying to call my mom and brother, though the phone signal was dead. We ran into the other two choir members who live on the ground floor, and that was another one of those small yet huge joys amidst the chaos.
Me puse un par de zapatos mientras comencé a llamar a mi mamá por teléfono, ya que mi familia vive en otra ciudad, pero mi esposa me hizo entrar en razón de que teníamos que salir rápido del edificio. Vivimos en un cuarto piso, y no percibí mayor peligro que los gritos de algunas de mis vecinas que también iban bajando, y mientras corría por las escaleras nunca dejé de intentar llamar a mi mamá. Cuando llegué a la calle, lo primero que vi fue derrumbes en medio de polvo, gente corriendo y gritando y automóviles que corrían a gran velocidad, como si las calles no estuvieran llenas de personas. Sentí mucho miedo, pero no solté a mi esposa, y nunca dejé de llamar a mi mamá y a mi hermano, pero la señal telefónica estaba muerta. Nos encontramos con los otros dos chicos de la coral que viven en planta baja, y esa fue otra de mis pequeñas grandes alegrías en medio del caos.
I managed to get in touch with my brother half an hour after the earthquake, as I had returned to the building with a friend whose Wi-Fi was working; he was safe in Turmero, and my family home was fine, but we had no news of my mother, who had gone to church. I believe I finally spoke to her two hours later, by which time night had fallen over the city. I took these photos while walking through my neighborhood in downtown Caracas; the choir members living nearby had decided to gather as a group, and once the eleven of us from the area had met up, we chose to stay in the courtyard of the National Pantheon, as we felt it would be safer there while waiting for aftershocks. Throughout that time, we learned just how powerful the quake had been and that it was actually the result of two earthquakes striking together. Our main goal was to find out how our families were doing amidst the chaos of the jammed phone lines.
Me pude comunicar con mi hermano media hora después del terremoto, ya que volví al edificio con uno de mis amigos y su wifi funcionaba, él estaba bien en Turmero, mi casa materna estaba bien, pero no sabíamos nada de mi mamá, ya que ella había ido a la iglesia, creo que hablé con mi mamá fue dos horas después, ya cuando la noche se había apoderado de la ciudad. Estas fotografías las tomé mientras caminaba mi zona del centro de Caracas, ya que todos los chicos de la coral que vivimos cerca decidimos hacer un gran grupo para estar juntos, y cuando nos unimos los once de nuestra zona decidimos quedarnos en el patio del Panteón Nacional, ya que según ellos habría menos peligro mientras se esperan las réplicas. Durante todo ese tiempo supimos lo fuerte que fue el sismo y que realmente fue la unión de dos terremotos. Nuestras metas era terminar de saber sobre nuestros familiares en medio del caos telefónico.
I know that for many reading this, an earthquake might seem like a routine natural event, but in my 38 years of life and my wife’s nearly 33, we had never experienced one before; it is strange, considering we live in a seismically active country. I suppose the release of energy is to be expected after such a long time without a major quake, but what was far from normal was the occurrence of two simultaneous earthquakes. Right now, our lives are at a standstill and I mean the lives of everyone living in the central and northern parts of the country: Aragua, Carabobo, Yaracuy, Caracas, La Guaira, Miranda, and even states like Lara, Cojedes, and Falcón. It was a massive event, and as a society, we were unprepared for it; after all, you know that our government has been a cancer that has caused us to hit rock bottom in every possible way.
Sé que para muchos que me leen quizás un sismo es una situación natural normal, pero en mis 38 años de vida nunca había vivido un terremoto, al igual que mi esposa en sus casi 33, y es extraño, ya que vivimos en un país sísmico. Creo que la energía liberada es normal luego de tanto tiempo sin tener un terremoto de gran magnitud, pero lo que no fue nada normal fue que se produjeran dos terremotos simultáneos. Justo ahora nuestras vidas están paradas, y me refiero a todos los que vivimos en el centro y norte del país, Aragua, Carabobo, Yaracuy, Caracas, La Guaira, Miranda, e incluso estados como Lara, Cojedes y Falcón. Fue algo grande y como sociedad no estábamos preparados para ello, ya saben que nuestro gobierno ha sido un cáncer que nos ha hecho tocar fondo en todos los sentidos.
The earthquakes struck on Wednesday, and people are still being rescued alive from the rubble today. My wife and I have tried to help however we can, within the limits of our own circumstances. We started by helping close friends and colleagues who couldn't return home for various reasons, and by collaborating with our music organization, which, given its prominence in the country, truly has the power to make a significant impact. I am dying to go home to Aragua to be with my family, but it’s complicated right now and I admit I’m a bit afraid, too. Perhaps we are meant to be here in the capital to fulfill our missions; I’ve come to realize that we have to go with God’s will 🙏 I’m still amazed to find myself writing a post like this, so different from what I usually share, but as I’ve always said, writing helps me heal. Los terremotos fueron el día Miércoles, y hoy se siguen recuperando personas que están vivas debajo de los escombros. Mi esposa y yo hemos intentado ayudar en lo que se puede, pero hasta donde nuestra realidad lo permite. Hemos comenzado con nuestras propias amistades cercanas, chicos de nuestro trabajo que no pudieron volver a sus hogares por distintas razones, y colaborando con nuestra casa musical, la cual sí tiene el poder de hacer mucho por su importancia en nuestro país. Muero de ganas de ir a mi casa en Aragua y estar con mi familia, pero justo ahora es complicado, además de tener algo de temor. Quizás la vida nos necesita aquí en la capital para cumplir nuestras misiones, desde hace un tiempo entendí que hay que fluir con la voluntad de Dios 🙏 Sigo muy sorprendido de que hoy escriba una publicación como esta, tan distinta a lo que generalmente escribo, pero como siempre les he dicho, escribir me ayuda a sanar. Hola amigo que bueno que están bien y no pasó a mayores solo el susto. Muy lamentable y como dices el cáncer del gobierno que con esto llegó al colmo pues no hay apoyo por su parte. Aquí en Cumaná se sintió y muchos no sintieron. Me asusté aunque acostumbrada a sentir sismos y temblores, ya vivimos eso hace años y es algo horrible. Fortaleza a todos.

And the strangest part is that most of our cities are built in the highest-risk areas. Things might have been different with a better economy and government, but two earthquakes at the same time? A mí me costó llorar los primeros días después, y de pronto antier, cuando salí a comprar agua me desboroné. Literalmente todo nos recuerda lo que acaba de ocurrir, los rostros, las fachadas, los escombros en la calle, etc. Trato de tomármelo con calma y de lidiar con las "pequeñas" réplicas. Confieso que el primer día no me moví de casa más que a comprar comida y agua, aquí nunca se sabe cuando los comercios se puedan salir de control, pero ahora un poco más calmado y organizado se puede ver qué hacer, de hecho la orquesta y el coro hemos parado nuestras actividades musicales por completo, es un buen lugar para ir como voluntario y asegurarme de que todo llegue a donde tenga que llegar, porque vaya que han ocurrido delitos aquí. I had experience with an earthquake once, but it was much weaker, and without any human casualties... I didn't know that your region is in the "earthquake" area, but I remember that when we had plans to move to New Zealand, they experienced a huge one...

As you said though, for some of us it's almost like a routine so we have learned how to deal with it and the infrastructure supports it hence minimizing the casualties. So, hearing how big the damage was, I was surprised. I hope you are safe and continue to be alert at least a day or two because typically, they are always followed with aftershocks, so it's best to stay away from taller buildings considering many I saw are collapsing. It's unfortunate that the construction was made without considering that the country is on a fault lines.
Oh and you may feel like the ground is constantly shaking for a while. It's not. Your mind tricks you as you experienced stresses. One of the trick I learned is to watch the glass of a water. If it shakes too then it's an earthquake, if it's not then it's not an earthquake.

Yes, it is a seismically active country, and following the earthquake 60 years ago, many earthquake-resistant structures were built. You know, I’m right here in the capital, and I believe fewer than ten buildings in the entire city actually collapsed—though several that are still standing are at risk of falling. On the other hand, the situation on the other side of the mountain, along the coast, is terrible; practically the entire state was lost. Even though we are far from the epicenter, Caracas and La Guaira sit on sedimentary soil—much like Mexico City—which intensified the force of the tremors. Caracas has been established for a long time, so the best approach is to reinforce it; however, La Guaira is a place where there shouldn't be any housing at all, given the tragedy caused by the rains back in '99.
The disastrous government we had for the last 27 years made a habit of building housing in record time just to appear on television claiming to help people; the truth is, however, that everything still standing dates back to before their time—though I suppose the earthquakes played a role, given that there were two of them. My wife and I were terrified by the force of the first one, and at the time, it seemed very strange when the intensity suddenly spiked; only hours later did we learn that a second, even stronger earthquake had merged with the first. We felt certain the building was going to collapse, largely because the duration of the event caused so much damage across the country.
I’ll also try the trick with the glass of water you mentioned, because just writing this message makes me feel like the ground is moving. We do have something hanging in our bedroom that lets us know when an aftershock is happening—or if we’re just feeling phantom movements—but right now, anything helps. Today is the last day of the month; we’re waiting for our paychecks so we can go visit our families in Aragua. It’s a state near the capital that suffered moderate damage—partly because the ground is more stable—but is geographically closer to the earthquake epicenters.
I feel so much sadness for my country right now, because there are also floods and fires on the other side of Venezuela; hundreds of families there have lost their homes, too, yet hardly anyone is talking about it.

Yes, you are right, but it was far enough from me that there was no damage -- further north, though, there was significant damage. We are closer neighbors on the Pacific Rim than some would like us to think ... just know that you are being thought of and prayed for by neighbors in the U.S.

Todas las redes sociales es noticias y casos de emergencia del hecho 😔, es duro que a pesar del Cáncer de políticos que joden cada día nuestros país pa colmo un sismo.

Hola Jesús, por cosas de la vida no estaba en Caracas cuando ocurrió el terremoto y en lo que me enteré no podía creer lo que decían en las noticias, mi primer instinto fue asegurarme que mi familia y personas cercanas estaban bien y cuando lo logré no podía controlar las ganas de llorar. Me alegra mucho saber que tú y tu familia están a salvo. Uno busca la forma de ayudar como puede desde adentro y desde afuera de Vzla. Lo que ha pasado es una tragedia inimaginable. Le pido a Dios que se apiade de nuestro país y nuestra gente 💔

Amén a esos bellos deseos, aquí siempre ocurre algo bueno, pero creo que todo es parte de esa meta en común que tanto anhelamos, que es volver a tener un país próspero en todo sentido. Muy doloroso lo ocurrido, me alegra que los tuyos estén bien y entiendo lo que sientes. Solo Dios sabe el por qué de la historia particular de cada persona en torno a esta tragedia. No te lo puedo negar, mi esposa y yo seguimos asustados y evidentemente hay traumas, aunque nos fue bastante bien, pero no dejo de pensar en las personas que perdieron todo, aunque sigan vivas. Será un camino largo, pero espero que la vida vaya sanando estas heridas 🙏
