Earthquakes and more Earthquakes!

I need to confess that the Colombian earthquake has reawakened all the traumas and scars I've carried since June 24th, when Venezuela was shaken, and this happened just as I was finally starting to walk the streets more peacefully. All of August has been a struggle to return to normal; I've sung, attended some gatherings with friends, I'm back at the gym, and I've even resumed my walks around the city. I just need to go hiking, but I haven't dared to go up there yet. In fact, the photos I've taken along the way, which I'm sharing in this Wednesday Walks series, show a city in the midst of rebuilding after the tragedy.

My walks have been strange, but I no longer feel so unsafe passing by buildings, and in fact, I've already memorized the places where it's best to avoid and streets that are best ignored in downtown Caracas. Many places have yellow tape to keep people away, but I'm happy to say that many structures are under repair. I like walking past the National Pantheon, which is near my house, and even through Plaza La Candelaria to see how the church is being restored, although I still don't go inside. However, the church fills up with parishioners who enter through the sides even though its facade is closed to the public.

On Monday, there was a very strong earthquake in Colombia, and it's inevitable that we feel sad, uneasy, and even scared because it makes us relive our own experience. I have so many friends living there, including in Cali, one of the affected cities. I spent almost all of Monday morning trying to contact them, and I still haven't been able to reach one of my best friends. I've also met many people from Hive who live in Colombia, but I dare say they're all doing well, and in fact, it was easier to contact them even though they're not active here on our blockchain.

For me, going for walks and taking pictures of everything I see along the way has been a therapeutic activity since my father died, and I've shared many of those photographs here on my blog through Wednesday Walk. But I never imagined that an experience like an earthquake (or two, to be more precise) would instill in me a fear of going outside, a fear that something might fall on me at any moment. More than a month has passed, and that never happened, so the fear is lessening. I no longer feel like something is going to fall on me, but the Colombian earthquake and some videos I've seen on the news and social media have been enough of an impetus to walk the streets and feel the ground move, even if it isn't real. I think there's still a way to go to heal from this trauma. I just hope I can continue to enjoy walking with my wife and taking pictures. I think it's the best way to move forward, though we shouldn't forget...

It's normal to be afraid to go outside after experiencing several earthquakes. Plus, the heat we're enduring is unbearable.

When we’re afraid of something, at least in my case, it’s time that reassures us that everything is fine and that what we were afraid of was just in our heads, and that’s how we relax. But here, the fear is well-founded, and it will be a long time before our minds tell us: ‘Everything’s fine.’ The whole area is now at risk of future earthquakes, and it’s not a bad thing to be cautious.

I’m absolutely delighted to see how they’re repairing the façades of certain buildings. That will take time too, and walking through the streets will become safer and safer, but as I say, that fear may still be there, and that’s normal. I heard about the earthquake in Colombia the very moment it was happening because I was actually talking to someone from Venezuela at that very moment. I truly hope, from the bottom of my heart, that it never happens again. A big hug, Jesús!🤗
