Hello everyone! I am delighted to share, once again, part of my experience visiting Rome last October. Today’s journey takes us to the Basilica of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte (Saint Andrew of the Thickets); the best part about discovering it is that it wasn't a planned stop on our itinerary—it was simply one of the surprises we stumbled upon while wandering the narrow streets of Rome. My wife, our two friends, and I were walking from the Trevi Fountain toward the Spanish Steps, but along the way, we were reading about and photographing everything that caught our eye—and that is when this Catholic basilica appeared right before us.

¡Hola a todos! Con mucha alegría hoy quiero compartir nuevamente parte de mi experiencia conociendo la ciudad de Roma en Octubre del año pasado. El viaje de hoy nos lleva a la Basílica Sant'Andrea delle Fratte (San Andrés de los Matorrales), y lo mejor de haberla conocido es que no era un destino que tuviéramos apartado en nuestra agenda, simplemente fue parte de las sorpresas que nos permitimos conocer al caminar por las estrechas calles de Roma. Mi esposa y nuestros dos amigos estábamos caminando desde la Fontana Di Trevi hasta las Escalinatas de la Plaza de España, pero en medio del camino leíamos y fotografiábamos todo lo que se nos topara en frente, y fue ahí donde apareció esta basílica católica frente a nosotros.

We noticed two very important things the moment we stepped into the church. The first was the size of the basilica. Unlike others, it was a very small space—despite its height and grandeur—especially when compared to other basilicas I had visited in Rome just days earlier, or even that very Saturday. The second thing we noticed was that it was undergoing maintenance; consequently, we couldn't photograph everything the church had to offer. Nevertheless, we had the good fortune of entering for free a place that—as we learned minutes later—was steeped in history, and which wasn't even the original structure built on that site, having been rebuilt more than once.

Notamos dos cosas muy importantes desde el primer momento en que pisamos el templo. Lo primero de ello era el tamaño de la Basílica. A diferencia de otras, era un lugar muy pequeño (más allá de su altura e imponencia), y esto lo digo en comparación a otras basílicas que conocí días antes e incluso ese mismo Sábado en Roma. Lo segundo que notamos fue que se encontraba en mantenimiento, motivo por el cual no pudimos fotografiar todo lo que el templo tenía para ofrecer, pero sea como sea, tuvimos la dicha de entrar gratis a un lugar que minutos después nos enteramos que tenía mucha historia, y que incluso ni siquiera es el templo original que se construyó en este lugar, ya que se ha levantado más de una vez.

Yes, this basilica is small compared to churches like Santa Maria Maggiore, St. Paul Outside the Walls, and, of course, St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican itself; nevertheless, it possessed all the features found in those larger ones, albeit arranged within a more compact space. An imposing dome rises in the center, gleaming with small windows and magnificent frescoes that make you feel as though you are in heaven among angels. Art is visible in every corner, as is the Baroque style reflected in the lighting, walls, pillars, and side chapels. Numerous significant details—extending even to the walls and floors—turn every nook into a work of art. We stopped by at midday when no ceremony was taking place, allowing us to move around and admire the surroundings—and, in my case, to offer a brief prayer.

Sí, esta basílica es pequeña en comparación a templos como Santa María la Mayor, San Pablo Extramuros y por supuesto, la misma Basílica de San Pedro en el Vaticano, pero de todos modos tenía todo lo que se puede apreciar en otras, aunque acomodado en estos pequeños espacios. En el centro se eleva una imponente cúpula que brilla con sus pequeñas ventanas e imponentes frescos que te hacen sentir en el cielo entre ángeles. El arte se puede apreciar en cualquier esquina, y también el estilo barroco en su iluminación, muros, pilares y capillas laterales. Hay muchos detalles importantes que convierten en arte cada rincón, incluyendo las paredes y el suelo. Pasamos por aquí a medio día y no había ningún tipo de ceremonia aquí dentro, así que pudimos desplazarnos por algunos lugares posibles para apreciar, en mi caso para orar un poco.

As a lover of marble sculptures, the artistic highlight of the church for me was the pair of beautiful angels guarding the altar. On the right stands the Angel with the Crown of Thorns, and on the left, the Angel with the Inscription of the Cross. Both are works by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and were originally intended for display on the bridge of Castel Sant'Angelo. These significant sculptures and the church itself—or at least the one my friends, my wife, and I were able to enter—have been open to the public for over 500 years. As with everything in Rome, walking its streets and visiting its major landmarks means traversing and experiencing history—both the history of art and the history of the Catholic faith.

Como amante de las esculturas de mármol, lo que más amé en el templo respecto a arte fueron esos hermosos dos ángeles que custodian el altar. A la derecha está el Ángel con la Corona de Espinas y a izquierda un Ángel con la inscripción: Ángel con la inscripción de la Cruz. Ambos son obra de Gian Lorenzo Bernini e iban hacer expuestos en el puente del Castillo de Sant'Angelo. Estas obras importantes y el mismo templo, o al menos este en el que pudimos entrar mis amigos, mi esposa y yo, ya tienen más de 500 años desde que se encuentra abierto al público. Al igual que todo en Roma, caminar por sus calles y pisar cada lugar importante es recorrer y vivir la historia, tanto del arte como la historia de la religión católica.

One difference between this and the other churches I visited in Rome is that the remains of prominent clergy members are not found here; however, there is a funerary monument dedicated to Cardinal Pierluigi Carafa. The Basilica of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte is another place well worth visiting, and I feel my post doesn't quite do justice to everything I saw there, as I only stayed for a short while. There is artwork behind the altar in the form of imposing paintings: the Crucifixion of Saint Andrew by Giovanni Battista Lenardi on the right, the Burial of Saint Andrew by Francesco Trevisani in the center, and the Death of Saint Andrew by Lazzaro Baldi on the left. I would have loved to see them up close or photograph each one individually, but I only have that one great shot of the altar. Perhaps I’ll visit again in the future; as I mentioned, it is very close to the Trevi Fountain—one of the must-see spots in Rome and Italy.

Una diferencia con el resto de las iglesias que conocí en Roma es que aquí no se encuentran los restos de ninguna persona importante del clero, sin embrago, sí hay un monumento funerario al Cardenal Pierluigi Carafa. La Basílica de Sant'Andrea delle Fratte es otro de esos lugares que vale la pena visitar, y creo que mi post se queda corto con todo lo que vi ahí, ya que solo estuve unos instantes. Hay arte detrás del altar en esos imponentes cuadros, que en orden de aparición es Crucifixión de Sant'Andrea a la derecha, de Giovanni Battista Lenardi , el Entierro de Sant'Andrea en el centro, de Francesco Trevisani y la Muerte de San Andrés en la izquierda, del artista Lazzaro Baldi; me habría encantado verlos más cerca o fotografiar a cada uno, pero solo les tengo esa gran foto del altar. Quizás lo vuelva a visitar en el futuro, como les dije, queda muy cera de la Fontana di Trevi, uno de los lugares obligatorios de Roma y de Italia.
