A Pink Birthday!

It’s #TBT, and actually, the last Thursday of the month. Since June 24th, my life on Hive has been a constant catharsis regarding the feelings, traumas, and experiences following the earthquakes; however, little by little, I’ve been able to focus on other topics and activities. Over the past week, starting with my wife’s birthday, we’ve returned to making music, whether for private engagements or to provide musical accompaniment for masses honoring those who lost their lives in the tragedy that struck Venezuela. So, even though I still walk the streets with all my senses on high alert, I’ve managed to sit down and look back on special moments like the one I’m sharing today, an idea inspired by @soyunasantacruz, who spearheaded a whole movement of birthday memories here in the Throwback Thursday community.

Jueves de #TBT y de hecho, último Jueves del mes. Desde el 24 de Junio me vida en Hive ha sido una constante catarsis por mis sentimientos, traumas y experiencias post terremotos, pero poco a poco he podido concentrarme en otros temas y actividades. Esta última semana desde el cumpleaños de mi esposa hemos vuelto a hacer música, ya sea por compromisos privados o por armonizar algunas misas en homenaje a las personas fallecidas en la tragedia que vivió Venezuela, así que aunque sigo caminando por las calles con todos mis sentidos muy activos y sigo viviendo en modo alerta, he podido sentarme y recordar momentos especiales como el que les comparto hoy, también inspirado por @soyunasantacruz que se encargó de hacer todo un movimiento de recuerdos de cumpleaños aquí en la comunidad Throwback Thursday.

The Family

Alison is one of our dearest friends. My wife and I have adopted her as a daughter 🤭—and not just because she is short, has a youthful face, and is considerably younger than us, but because, somewhere along the way, she found her way into each of our hearts individually. Today, we can both say we hold her in immense affection and trust her implicitly; in fact, on that first night after the earthquakes, she was the only person we allowed to be with us amidst the chaos and terror (though I admit we didn't sleep a wink). As a fellow Gemini, her birthday fell on the second-to-last Saturday of May; we had an opera performance at the Teresa Carreño Theater that day and planned to celebrate her special occasion afterward. To our surprise, once we changed out of our choir formal wear, we realized we had both coincidentally dressed in pink 🤣 a totally Gemini thing to do 😎

Macaroni La Candelaria

Alison es una de nuestras amigas más queridas. Mi esposa y yo la hemos adoptado como hija 🤭 y no solo porque sea de baja estatura, tenga cara de niña y sea considerablemente menor que nosotros, sino porque en algún momento de nuestro día a día se fue metiendo en el corazón de cada uno por separado, y hoy en día podemos decir que ambos le tenemos un cariño inmenso y una confianza infinita; de hecho, esa primera noche post terremotos fue la única persona que permitimos que nos acompañara en el caos y el terror (aunque confieso que no dormimos nada). Siendo del signo de Géminis igual que yo, su fecha de cumpleaños fue el penúltimo Sábado del mes de Mayo, ese día tuvimos una ópera en el Teatro Teresa Carreño y en la noche nos iríamos a celebrar su día especial, y para nuestra sorpresa, una vez que nos cambiamos el uniforme de gala de la coral nos dimos cuenta que ambos coincidimos al vestirnos de rosado 🤣 una cosa totalmente geminiana 😎

Although I titled this post "A Pink Birthday," the truth is it wasn't quite as pink as we’d expected—mainly because the original venue didn't have the drinks the girls were looking for. So, at the last minute, the whole group started suggesting new spots that suited everyone's tastes in terms of drinks, food, and budget. It wasn't easy, trying to coordinate plans with so many people is a lot—so I preferred to just go with the flow and calmly waited for everyone to decide on the best option. We ended up at a pizzeria; it seems that’s always the best choice 🤣. Once there, Alison appointed me the official photographer for her birthday. I took plenty of photos of her that day, but I have a few here that I know she won't mind me sharing, and yes, she does read my Hive posts, even though she still hasn't decided to open an account herself (like almost all my friends)...

Aunque he nombrado a este post "Un Cumpleaños Rosa", la verdad es que no fue tan rosa como lo esperábamos, especialmente porque el lugar original donde íbamos a celebrar no tenía las bebidas que las chicas estaban buscando, así que todo el grupo de asistentes a última hora comenzó a proponer lugares nuevos que se adaptaran a los gustos en licor, comida y economía. No fue nada fácil, es demasiada gente tratando de cuadrar algo, y yo prefiero adaptarme a la situación, así que esperé tranquilamente que todos definieran lo mejor. Terminamos en una pizzería, parece que siempre es la mejor opción 🤣 y una vez ahí, Alison me nombró el fotógrafo oficial de su cumpleaños. Tomé muchas fotos para ella ese día, pero tengo algunas aquí que sé que no le molestará que comparta, y sí, ella lee mis post para Hive, aunque aún no se decide a abrir una cuenta (como casi todos mis amigos)...

This place is called Macaroni. It is a pizzeria located across from the south entrance of the Sambil Shopping Center in the La Candelaria district of Caracas. It is the perfect spot to eat pizza, drink beer, listen to good music, and hang out for a few hours past midnight. I remember one afternoon when Alison and I were talking about our respective birthdays. As Geminis, we hadn't planned on celebrating them—we found fault with everything—yet we ended up inviting more people than anyone else did for their own birthdays. Looking back now, we realize we were the last of our friends to celebrate a birthday in a beautiful city—with its buildings and facades intact—and with the joy of feeling safe on the ground beneath our feet. Knowing that a tragedy as massive as the earthquake would strike less than a month later makes us realize how important it is to celebrate the fact that we are alive and surrounded by wonderful people: our family and friends.

Este lugar se llama Macaroni. Es una pizzería ubicada frente a la entrada sur del Centro Comercial Sambil de La Candelaria en Caracas. Lugar perfecto para comer pizza, beber cerveza, escuchar buena música y quedarse unas buenas horas pasada la media noche. Recuerdo que una tarde Alison y yo estábamos hablando de nuestros respectivos cumpleaños. Como geminianos que somos no pretendíamos celebrarlos, veíamos problema en todo (y al final invitamos más gente que todos los demás en sus cumpleaños). Hoy en día, y en retrospectiva, nos damos cuenta que fuimos los últimos de nuestros amigos en celebrar el cumpleaños en una ciudad bonita, con sus edificios y fachadas intactas y con la alegría de sentirnos seguros sobre el suelo que pisamos. Saber que en menos de un mes ocurriría una tragedia tan grande como el terremoto nos hace darnos cuenta de lo importante que es celebrar que estamos vivos y que estamos rodeados de gente maravillosa, nuestra familia y nuestros amigos.

Yes, friends, we all know it, but it is good to be reminded from time to time because we seem to forget. We have only one life, and it is very short. Here in my country, it took only about 39 seconds for many lives to end and for the lives of others to change forever. I don't think I will ever hesitate again to celebrate a birthday—or to attend a friend's—if I truly have the chance. The first post I wrote for my blog in 2018 was about this very thing: living every second as if it were the last. Since then, a lot has happened in my life—illness, death, betrayal, earthquakes—but also a marriage, travels, my dream job, and even the opportunity to write these words in a community I created for everyone's enjoyment, where I aim to help people by contributing whatever I can. Life isn't all sunshine and rainbows like in fairy tales, but it is a blessing; let's live it passionately ❤️

Sí amigos, ya todos los sabemos, pero es bueno recordarlo eventualmente porque parece que se nos olvida. La vida es una sola y es muy corta. Aquí en mi país bastó aproximadamente 39 segundos para que la vida de muchos terminara y la vida de los demás cambiara para siempre. Creo que más nunca dudaré en celebrar un cumpleaños, o dejar de asistir al de algún amigo si realmente tengo la oportunidad. El primer post que escribí para mi blog en 2018 hablaba de esto mismo, de vivir cada segundo como si fuera el último de nuestras vidas, y desde ese momento, al menos en mi vida ha ocurrido mucho; enfermedades, muerte, traiciones, terremotos, pero también un matrimonio, viajes, el trabajo de mis sueños y hasta puedo escribir estas palabras en una comunidad que cree para el disfrute de muchos y desde donde pretendo ayudar a las personas aportando lo que pueda. La vida no es color de rosa como en los cuentos de Hadas, pero es una bendición, vivámosla apasionadamente ❤️
