A Birthday Amidst Grief

Even though we were still mourning the tragedy that had struck our country three weeks earlier, July 17th—my wife’s 33rd birthday—arrived. I didn’t want to spend the day cooped up at home with her, and I certainly didn’t want her spending her entire birthday doing the recreational activities that choir sopranos perform for children in shelters; so, before nightfall, I decided to take her to an affordable spot where we could celebrate and have a quiet toast. I remember that, long before the earthquakes, we had planned to celebrate her birthday in Galipán—a beautiful little village high up on Mount Ávila—but not only was that area badly hit, we still didn't dare venture up the mountain; in fact, aftershocks were still occurring in the region. I don’t know if we were being overly cautious, but we preferred to avoid certain activities—whether out of fear or out of respect for our neighbors who had been affected.

Things haven't been great financially, but my wife's birthday falls on a good day—right after payday—so I can always find an excuse to make sure she gets a cake. Some of her friends had already mentioned they had gifts for her, so I made sure to pick a centrally located spot where they could join us that evening; to my surprise, more people showed up than I had expected. There were five original guests, but believe me, by the end of the night, there were 15 of us in that small restaurant. When I saw people keep arriving, I even took the liberty of inviting some of my own friends—people my wife is also fond of.

We gathered at the Pepperoni restaurant and bar in La Candelaria. The most budget-friendly option was to bring our own cake and share some pizzas among the group. We were able to push several tables together, and for those who drink, it was easier to order buckets of beer. With so many people who had just received their paychecks, the night turned out to be very affordable 😅. Another reason we chose this spot is that they stay open very late—unlike on my birthday, when they stopped serving food at 8:00 PM, only for me to find out later that they closed at 10:00. We had more freedom, though we can't forget that we’re older now 🤣—over thirty—so we don't tend to party and dance until dawn anymore, especially not just a few weeks after a double earthquake.

The World Cup final took place right after that birthday Friday. I had completely tuned out the global event following the tragedy of June 24th, but my interest returned during the final week, and I watched the last few matches with my wife in the quiet comfort of our home. The internet connection had improved, and the pace at our center’s collection point had slowed down, so we allowed ourselves to relax a bit amidst our daily activities. We watched the final that weekend—with birthday cake still on hand—all set to enjoy the game and, of course, Shakira’s halftime performance 🤭. However, I admit I was surprised to see videos of massive crowds—hundreds or even thousands of people—gathering in shopping malls across Caracas and other states to watch the match; for us personally, the idea of being in places like that, especially with such large crowds, is terrifying. Thank God nothing bad happened, and while I understand we can’t live in fear (something I’ve struggled with a bit myself), moments like that small birthday gathering with friends or the goal celebrations in the malls made me feel like life is getting back on track, even though the city’s scars remain visible to everyone.

In the end, everything turned out beautifully. I saw my wife smile, and right now, as I write this, she is beside me enjoying the birthday gifts she received last week. Although I was surprised that so many friends showed up that night, I understood that we were all overwhelmed by information and feeling low due to the earthquakes. No one hesitated to leave their homes and spend that pleasant time with us, even though it was an unplanned idea. Everything flowed naturally; we arrived talking about our terrifying experiences during the earthquakes but ended up raising a glass and relaxing, recalling the routine we used to share after rehearsals and at the end of the week. In fact, we’ve already met up again; yesterday, July 24th—exactly one month after the tragedy—we were called in for an important meeting at work, and our choir director didn't hesitate to ask us to sing Josep Vila’s In Paradisum together in tribute to those who lost their lives thirty days ago... I think this is the first post I’ve written about something other than the events of last month, and I’d like to think my mental and spiritual healing process is going well, even though I still feel the ground moving 🙏
