A walk remembering our childhood days

February 15, 2023

Walking is a part of our daily lives. Though the present times didn't let us walk most of the time but still we do walking but not as much as before.

I remember life when I was a child. Transportation is limited, we used to hike or walk going to a next barangay because we don't have something to ride on except our slippers.

During my high school life, we used to walk too going to our school located to the next barangay. Walking is fun just time as all students are just walking. We are having fun while walking and we didn't felt weary and we didn't noticed we already reach our destination.

That's life before, unlike now, people have different means of transportation from bicycle to motorcycle to tricycle and four wheels vehicle.

When I was a child, planting different plants in the garden along the creek was my parents primary source of income. As children, we helped by going in the garden when we reach home from school. My mother will prepare some food for us to eat (usually a cold rice, being heat again with water and salt) then we will go straight to the garden where our father are waiting.

We will just walk and run going there. When we are going home, still we walk but this time we carry something. Most of the time we will bring a bunch of banana, fruits, harvested vegetables or some firewood.

In the first Sunday of February, I and my siblings decided to visit our farm and get some fruits in the garden.

We really enjoyed the moment harvesting some marang fruits and eating some ripe marang so fresh from the tree. On the other hand, we missed our father who passed away one year ago. Every plant in the garden reminds us of him.

When we're done, we decided to go home. The marang and firewood collected by my sister was put in the topdown (a motorcycle with a side car). It was just small so all of us can't ride on it.

I told them, we'll just walk. Our younger brother reacted ngek! it is an expression that seems he doesn't want to walk. Might be he felt lazy or tired. I then told him, When we were still a child we used to walk in here almost everyday.

He volunteered to drive the topdown and it made him free from walking, lol. My son go with him too as he wanted to ride on topdown.

We separate ways as they head to the center road while we were passing through the road near the creeks.

Me, my sister and my brother were left walking. As I look behind, I saw the big marang tree where we harvested some of its fruits earlier.

Looking right side in front of us I saw a group of banana trees where my father planted. There's a lot of them right. This will give banana fruits for the family especially for our mother.

In front of us is the great Mt. Matutum where we can see it's beauty almost everywhere around our community or town.

Have you noticed a group of coconut trees a far? Our home was located near to it. So imagine, it was a long walk before we could reach home.

We are surrounded by pineapple plantation. We are like an island but instead of water we are surrounded by pineapples.

My sister walk ahead of us as I stopped taking some pictures. She brought the stick with some catching bag at the bottom where we used to get marang fruits.

I also called by brother to wait for me, lol. Oh please don't leave me behind while running towards him.

While walking I also noticed the beautiful clouds formation above. It made the sky wonderful to look at.

We also pass by this area where my brother in law is cleaning banana trees. He didn't own it but he was the care taker of it.

There are also a lot of banana trees along as this is the common plant planted along the creek.

Here's another picture of Mt. Matutum where the clouds covered its peak.

Lastly, as we are nearing home. I took a picture with my brother.

It was a walk remembering our childhood memories. We passed through with that road almost everyday as we head to our father's garden and we went back home. Those road is a witness of our sad and happy memories along the road.

This is my participation for the #wednesdaywalk initiated by @tattoodjay and #makemesmile by @elizacheng.

Take some time to walk again. Thank you for reading.

Oh it wasn't a jackfruit. We call it marang. It is like a small jackfruit but with white small fruits inside.

This is what marang looks like:

Do you mean jackfruit? We also call jackfruit as nangka in our local dialect but this fruit is not jackfruit. We call it marang. This is what it looks like inside.

You're welcome. Many people thought it is jackfruit but it's not, they're different.

When I went to Vietnam, I noticed a lot of locals and tourists alike just walk to their destination even if its a bit far. Not sure really but maybe because there were a lot of attractions as a first time visitor or that the people's energy was infectious. Anyways, made me realize that most of us here even if its just a few blocks away still prefer to ride a jeepney or tricycle. 😅 I now enjoy walking more than ever because it keeps me in shape and improves our health.

That's true @indayclara, even just a 2 minutes to 5minutes walk distance, most people are riding a tricycle here.

In my case, I just ride if I am really in a hurry or if I'm carrying something heavy.

It's good that you prefer to walk to keep you in safe, for sure stay sexy ka Nyan😃. Thanks for dropping by.

What a place sis! The extensive pineapple plantation is breathtaking and the overall landscape too. I thought Marang is jackfruit, it turns out it is not.

A wonderful walk this must be !LADY :)

Pineapple plantation is so wide here in our place. Most vacant lot were rented by Dole and plants with pineapples.

Marang really looks like a small jackfruit but it's not. If you have seen my previous post about garden as a treasure, I have shared a photo about what is inside of the marang and I shared it too in the previous comments of this post.

Thanks for your time sis.

Made me smile reading through. You and your brother are like twins. Beautiful capture of Mt. Matutum. The cloud above it is a nice touch. Awesome pineapple plantation. Pineapple as far as the eye can see. Such an enjoyable walk! So sorry about your dad.

Happy reminiscing #WednesdayWalk!

Yeah you said it right sir @tattoodjay. They will complain and will say it's so tiring to walk not realizing it was the easiest and best exercise.

It's nice to walk in the same footsteps years later in life. Especially if we can share it with our children or other younger family members.

Yes, you're right. But that time I didn't walk with my son as he rode in the motorcycle going home.

Thanks for being here.
