A visit to the Votive Church and Cathedral of Our Lady of Hungary in Szeged
We spent the first day in Szeged visiting the sights. It was very clear and sunny weather, suitable for a pleasant walk around the city. Szeged has a lot of cultural and historical sights, and I will describe some of the most interesting to you in the following posts. The first and most impressive historical landmark I saw in this charming Hungarian city was The Votive Church and Cathedral of Our Lady of Hungary.
When we approached, I couldn't believe how big it was. With every look, we discovered its beauty.
It is a Catholic church, one of the largest in Hungary.
It is decorated with imposing sculptures of apostles and saints that tell about the history.
What I learned there was that at the end of the 19th century, Szeged was hit by a terrible flood, so at the beginning of the 20th century, this church was built as a church of salvation as a sign of gratitude to God. That is why it is so big, about 90 meters high.
When we looked at the exterior from all sides and marveled at this church built in the Hungarian Art Nouveau style, we went inside.
It was very impressive inside. We observed frescoes and sculptures.
What impressed my husband the most was the organ.
He had never seen such a big organ with about 9000 pipes. He is a music teacher, so this was an amazing moment for him.
We looked at every corner.
There are stained glass windows through which light shines. And an impressive sculpture of Christ's crucifixion.
This place is definitely more than a church. It is the symbol of the city.
And it has great value both because of the history and the circumstances in which it was built, and because it is an architectural masterpiece.
Thank you very much for reading.

I liked your post very much, I know about this cathedral and I passed by it but I never went inside, if I'm not mistaken there is a bike library next to it.
On my next visit to Szeged I will definitely stop here.
By the way, did you go to the sausage festival this weekend in Turija?
I wanted so much to get there but unfortunately my plans have changed lately and I didn't make it, maybe next time.
I haven't been to Turia either, I didn't even know it was now. Those festivals are interesting, there are many of them in Serbia, for every kind of food 😀
I was also curious how is such a festival in another country, it was relatively close to where I live, about 3 hours drive (now it depends how long you stay in customs), I've been to festivals like that only here in Romania.
I liked the concept of buying directly from small producers (even if the prices are higher than in big stores), I put great emphasis on that, when I visit places in Romania I look for those local producers from which I especially buy honey, I am a big honey consumer.
I agree, it's always better to buy from local producers. If you are a fan of bacon and dried meat products like prosciutto, we also have a bacon fest (Slaninijada) in Kacarevo, which also may not be far from you. 😊
That's right, I think it's about 230 km to there, probably a little over 3 hours drive, when is this festival?
It was from February 13 to 16. Ok, next year 😊
Ohh, that's for next year, I really would have liked to try such an experience in another country😉
I saw this post which is very beautiful, it has a very beautiful church building with decoration, I like the building ❤️
The interior and the exterior designs of the church are just top notch!
They did not spare any expense on portraying their skills and art.
Thanks for sharing!😄
