A visit to Tabor and the Old castle above Lasko, Slovenia
During our stay in Lasko, the thermal spa of Slovenia, in addition to bathing in the thermal water, we also used the time for a walk. My kids weren't too thrilled about it because they preferred to spend time at the pools of the hotel where we were staying, but we convinced them to visit some historical places. 😊 On the second day of our stay, rain was forecast for the afternoon, so in the morning we headed to the old town of Lasko, known as Tabor, located on the top of Lasko with stunning views above.
The old castle, which the locals call the old town, is located on a hill above the Savinja river, and the walk is great for a morning activity because you have to go uphill.
This was an aggravating circumstance for my kids, especially for my daughter who wanted me to carry her. But luckily, a group of her peers (perhaps even younger) from kindergarten came along, who were going to the old town with their teachers as well. They told us to follow them and that they knew the way, so we followed them. I was amazed by those little children who were so lively and full of energy that we could hardly keep up with them.
I thought about what could be the reason for that, and it is probably the way of life and the fresh air that these children are used to, while my children come from an urban environment where the air cannot even be compared to the air in Lasko.
We reached the spacious green meadows below the castle where the children were playing a little.
And then we went up to the castle. It was very beautiful up close.
Tabor and the Old town (castle) of Lasko preserve the spirit of centuries past and tell the story of its rich history. Located above the Savinja River, the Old town of Lasko dates back to the 12th century and served for centuries as a strategic stronghold for defending and controlling nearby routes.
Later, in the 16th century, the Tabor was built – a fortified refuge protecting the local population from Ottoman raids.
Today, walking along its preserved walls and green slopes, it’s easy to imagine the turbulent moments of history written into its stones.
The castle now houses the Pavus restaurant, which has one Michelin star. This time we were not in a financial opportunity to try their food, but we plan to do so when we come here again.
I enjoyed looking into the distance. The view of Lasko from Tabor was impressive.
On the way back we walked along the streets where all the yards were beautifully arranged and everything was somehow in perfect order.
That order and neatness make me calm and I enjoyed looking around.
Along the way, we also saw a very old house that reflects the past of this town.
After the walk, we went bathing, and I will write about that in the next post.
Thank you for reading.

The fact that the old castle now houses a Michelin-starred restaurant, Pavus, is an interesting juxtaposition of history and modern gastronomy! It definitely sounds like something to look forward to on a future visit. I'd be curious to hear about your experience there if you do get the chance to dine there.
Traveling is the thing that broadens our minds

The place looks good and also your photography. Thank you for sharing that to us and your warming journal.
I am truly amazed by this place. It is clean, and everything is organized and in its proper place. However, I can't help but wonder where all the people in this town are; the only ones I see are the kids going uphill.
Traveling can give us a sense of freedom and allows us to experience different cultures and their histories.
I love how you turned a potential rainy day into an adventure! Exploring historical sites is such a rewarding experience. Thanks for sharing your trip!

This town looks so beautiful, neat and green. The castle is so well maintained, and all of the stonework seems to be in great condition. That grassy hills looks like something out of distant memory, and I have the childlike urge to roll down it haha

Such a breathtaking view! I've never been into a restaurant with a Michelin star, but nothing really matters anymore when you are surrounded by so much beauty!

Wow, the old town of Lasko looks so picturesque from that angle above the hill. What a wonderful opportunity to see this beautiful place and take a walk on its paths. The old castle still stands strong through the centuries. Some of the houses and other structures are beautifully designed too, though they may look contemporary. So love it!
It's been a while sis.. seems like both of us were busy bees hehe
