Can you imagine traveling along a narrow, treacherous road—challenging and dangerous—where on one side, the living rock has been worn down by human hands to carve out the path, and on the other, cloaked in the lush vegetation of the region, yawns a deep cliff? All this, just to reach the town of Viñales in Cuba’s western province of Pinar del Río. To risk your life, even if just a little, in order to discover a paradise where, after being greeted by the rounded mogotes and a landscape that enchants at every hour of the day, you’re also welcomed by one of the most charming towns Cuba has to offer. I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to say so.
Crowned by its Central Park, which houses the Catholic Church and what was once the City Hall, Viñales offers an undeniable example of Vernacular Architecture—resilient despite the passage of time and the natural disasters that have struck it in recent years. Truly, I don’t know of another place in Cuba where the combination of cultural traditions, agricultural techniques, tobacco heritage, and architectural legacy is preserved as beautifully as it is in this small town. Many have spoken to me about Trinidad and Remedios—but those are two places I still owe myself.
Strolling through its streets, you come across true treasures: houses perfectly painted, their red roofs darkened by years of moss and moisture, and their cheerful residents sitting on their porches, soaking in the coolness of the evening or the breeze that rises on certain afternoons—always ready with a greeting, always willing to help the passerby. It’s a town that, every time you explore it, reveals something new—scenes worthy of being frozen in time through a photograph (or several).
There are also privileged constructions, where every detail harmonizes with the valley and its wonders—buildings perched atop the hills, whose balconies, as you approach them, unveil an unsurpassable view of the valley. They make you feel as though you’re floating in the air, offering a strangely vivid sensation of lightness.
An experience worthy of being lived and told—a place where the natural blends seamlessly with what human hands have created, where modernity and tradition coexist. A truly dreamlike town. Today I remember, many years ago, when I hadn’t yet considered dedicating myself to photography, I was enjoying a folkloric performance featuring Afro-Cuban dances at the foot of the Catholic Church. Suddenly, a dancer dressed in yellow and white broke away from the group. Behind her, the church; around her, the golden hour. Everything aligned perfectly, and I couldn’t let the moment slip away. One image that captures the essence of syncretism on the island. Here it is.
