Baracoa nos regaló mucho más que naturaleza, paisajes, ríos, playas, montañas, nos entregó una ciudad repleta de gente maravillosas y la mezcla de las capas de muchas etapas vividas en Cuba, desde los asentamientos aborígenes (que aun queda viva parte de esa cultura, la original), de las primeras construcciones de cuando la colonización hasta muchas construcciones modernas que se van entremezclando en todo el panorama citadino.

Baracoa gave us far more than nature, landscapes, rivers, beaches, and mountains—it offered us a city filled with wonderful people and a rich layering of Cuba’s many lived eras. From the aboriginal settlements (whose original culture still lives on), to the earliest colonial constructions, and into the modern buildings that now blend into the city’s evolving panorama.

Y es que Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Baracoa fue la primera villa en fundarse el 15 de agosto de 1511, te podrás imaginar si ha llovido desde entonces sobre ella. No es nada descabellado pensar que puedes caminar por sus calles y encontrar un fortín el cual servía de protección contra ataques de Corsarios y Piratas y entonces tu imaginación puede trasladarse más de 500 años en la historia.

Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Baracoa was the first village founded in Cuba, on August 15, 1511—just imagine how much rain has fallen over it since then. It’s not far-fetched to think you could stroll through its streets and come across a fortress once used to defend against corsair and pirate attacks, and suddenly your imagination travels back more than 500 years into history.

De las siete villas fundadas por los españoles en el siglo XVI, es la única que permanece en su sitio original (algunas, como la Habana que fue fundada en áreas pantanosas cercanas al golfo de Batabanó tuvieron que ser trasladadas por ubicaciones más adecuadas). Sus calles empedradas, sus aceras esccalonadas, sus fortalezas coloniales como La Punta, Matachín y el Castillo de Seboruco, y su arquitectura de madera y tejas (un mar de tejas), conservan el alma de un la época.

Of the seven towns founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, it is the only one that remains in its original location. Others, like Havana—initially established in swampy areas near the Gulf of Batabanó—had to be relocated to more suitable sites. Its cobbled streets, stepped sidewalks, colonial fortresses such as La Punta, Matachín, and the Castle of Seboruco, and its wooden and tiled architecture (a true sea of terracotta tiles) preserve the soul of a bygone era.

Una ciudad donde se erige un monumento a una de sus leyendas urbanas más inquietantes. Una leyenda llena de misterio, dolor y profecía donde el personaje principal es "El Pelú" personaje urbano que maldice a Baracoa, cuentan que andaba desaliñado por las calles viviendo de la caridad de los baracoenses, aunque algunos lo apedreaban (una historia parecida al de Caballero de París en la Habana). En el pasado el Ayuntamiento lo expulsó de la ciudad y en el presente lo tiene bien presente.

A city where a monument stands in honor of one of its most unsettling urban legends. A tale steeped in mystery, sorrow, and prophecy, with its central figure being “El Pelú”—a wandering soul who cursed Baracoa. They say he roamed the streets in disheveled clothes, surviving on the charity of locals, though some threw stones at him (a story reminiscent of Havana’s “Caballero de París”). In the past, the city council expelled him—but in the present, his memory remains vividly alive.

Otras de las maravillas que encierra la ciudad es la Cruz de Parra una de las reliquias traídas por Cristobal Colón en su viaje de descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo. Es el único vestigio físico que queda de la llegada europea y más que un objeto religioso es considerado un símbolo de encuentro, choque y transformación. Hoy se encuentra custodiada en la Catedral de Baracoa debido a que muchos viajeros han atentado contra la preservación de esta reliquia. Imaginen que solo queda esta de las 29 que trajo Colón.

Another of the city’s wonders is the Cruz de la Parra, one of the relics brought by Christopher Columbus during his voyage of discovery to the New World. It is the only physical remnant that remains from the European arrival, and more than a religious object, it is considered a symbol of encounter, collision, and transformation. Today, it is safeguarded in the Cathedral of Baracoa, as many travelers have threatened its preservation over the years. Just imagine—this is the only one left of the 29 crosses Columbus is said to have placed.

Pero, en este viaje, también encontramos una ciudad llena de cicatrices. Una ciudad maltratada por la fuerza brutal de la naturaleza, por el paso del tiempo (que también deja sus marcas bien profundas) y de algo de abandono, de olvido.

But on this journey, we also found a city full of scars. A city battered by the brutal force of nature, by the passage of time (which also leaves its deep marks), and by a touch of neglect, of forgetfulness.
