Un amigo (@agustinmenendez) me comebtaba que había perdido muchas oportunidades de fotografiar lugares hermosos por no tener una cámara encima en el justo momento, y que además, pudieron ser momentos irrepetibles. La verdad es que a todos nos ha pasado en algún momento. Leyendo su comentario recordaba mis viajes a Batabanó (al Surgidero), a Majana, al cementerio de barcos en la Bahía del Mariel, y en cada uno de esos viajes cientos de fotografías para hacer que se perdieron en el tiempo. También, en aquellos tiempos, hablamos casi de 20 años atrás, todo me llamaba la atención pero no tenía el afán por capturar los instantes relevantes que vivía. A diferencia de hoy, llevo una cámara a todo el lugar al que voy, no solo de viaje, también si salgo a la calle a caminar, ya la cámara fotográfica forma parte de mi cuerpo, de mis manos, de mi forma de mirar.

A friend (@agustinmenendez) once told me he had missed many chances to photograph beautiful places simply because he didn’t have a camera with him at the right moment—and those moments, he said, might have been unrepeatable. Amaro was one of those places I had wanted to visit for a long time, but the people who could have guided me on the adventure always told me there was nothing interesting to see there. They repeated time and again that, of all the places in Mayarí, it would be the last one worth visiting because it had nothing appealing.
Time passed amid countless justifications and opinions that meant little to me—because I hadn’t seen the place with my own eyes. I needed to take a walk, to let the path reveal things along the way that turned out to be truly fascinating.

Sentarse por un instante y ver como el paisaje iba transformándose, como el dinamismo de lo que se veía era enorme, montañas que no se veían aparecieron de la nada como si una mano gigantesca las hubiera puesto allí en un segundo.

Un conjunto de ideas se fueron apoderándose de mi mente y la cámara no paraba de disparar para no perder ni un solo instante. ¡Qué maravilla de lugar! Menos mal que no atendí aquellos criterios que emitieron, me hubiera perdido algo realmente inverosímil.

To watch the mist caress the surface of the water, erasing the far shore from view and surrendering to the sensation that, rather than a lagoon before you, there stretched an endless sea—its only edge the place where you stood. To sit for a moment and witness the landscape transform, to feel the sheer dynamism of what unfolded before your eyes: mountains that had been invisible suddenly emerged from nowhere, as if placed there in an instant by a giant hand.

A flood of thoughts began to take hold of my mind, and the camera kept firing, unwilling to let a single moment slip away. What a marvelous place! I’m so glad I didn’t listen to those opinions—had I done so, I would’ve missed something truly unbelievable.

Regresé de ese sitio con el deber cumplido, satisfecho por ese día; pero también con ideas más claras y con la mente preñada de nuevos proyectos para realizar sobre el terreno de esta laguna, que no solo adorna el lugar sino que da comida a los lugareños, ayuda a la siembra y a la cría. Pronto estaré de vuelta en el camino para seguir profundizando en el terreno.

I returned from that place with my duty fulfilled, satisfied with the day; but also with a clearer mind and thoughts brimming with new projects to carry out on the land surrounding this lagoon—a body of water that not only beautifies the area, but also feeds the locals, supports farming, and sustains livestock. I’ll soon be back on the path, ready to keep delving deeper into the terrain.

Sin dudas he aprendido en los últimos años a cargar con una cámara a donde vaya, a no regirme por el criterio de personas que no ven la belleza incluso en lo simple y a deleitarme con cada instante que me regala la naturaleza en este valle.

Without a doubt, over the past few years I’ve learned to carry a camera wherever I go—to stop letting myself be guided by the opinions of those who fail to see beauty, even in the simplest things—and to delight in every moment that nature offers me in this valley.
