Poder contemplar esa carretera serpenteante entre el mar y montañas (las mal altas de Cuba), las playas intermitentes, las desembocadura de los ríos con sus arenas negras arrastradas desde el mismo corazón de la sierra o de piedras redondas formadas por el oleaje desgastante prometía un paisaje de película.

One day I was invited on a trip—one of those invitations where you don’t really know the destination, but you feel deep down it will be a place full of beauty, a place that will enrich your photo albums, your travel memories, and perhaps much more. The southern coast of Santiago de Cuba, from Punta de Maisí to Cabo Cruz, is nothing short of spectacular. The winding road between the sea and Cuba’s tallest mountains, the scattered beaches, the river mouths carrying black sands from the heart of the Sierra, and the rounded stones shaped by the waves all promised a landscape straight out of a film.

The only thing left was the right moment—the landscape, the instant that would unfold so I could capture its beauty, because the urge to take countless photos had already taken hold of me.

The place was about one hundred and fifty kilometers away, so we hopped on a bus and set off on the adventure. Once we arrived, everything seemed to matter—the waves crashing against the shore and spreading into fans of foam and sand, the objects scattered along the beach, the silhouettes, the rocks. Each one told a story, each one revealed beauty, each one gave us the chance to create our own image. The walks felt endless, not because of distance, but because at every step I found something worth stopping for, to admire, to experiment, and to photograph.

De esta forma, iba quedando la memoria fotográfica que enamoró en El Francés, como mi corazonada me decía: cada día, cada recodo, cada objeto iba a enriquecer mi experiencia fotográfica en el lugar. Nos quedamos con ganas infinitas de seguir haciendo, pero también los días que permaneceríamos allí se nos iban acabando y hubo mucho que retratar. Por supuesto que no solo de larga exposición vive el fotógrafo, también se recogieron otras instantáneas que se irán mostrando en próximas publicaciones dedicadas a la vida cotidiana del municipio más largo de Cuba, al paisaje y otros detalles.

Y como siempre pasa, abandonamos el lugar con enormes ganas de volver.

That’s how the photographic memory of El Francés began to take shape, just as I had felt it would: every day, every corner, every detail added to my experience behind the camera. We were left wanting more, but our days there were running out, and there was still so much to capture. And, as always, we left with a deep desire to come back.
