Hubiera pensado que era mentira, que eso no se hubiera podido ver jamás en Cuba, que la neblina y la palma nunca se conjugarían para entregar un paisaje infinitamente hermoso. Pero la sorpresa fue tremenda al encontrarme estas imágenes en el valle de Mayarí Arriba a los pies de la Sierra Cristal.

I would have thought it was a lie, that such a sight could never be seen in Cuba—mist and palm trees never coming together to offer a landscape of infinite beauty. But the surprise was immense when I came upon these images in the Mayarí Arriba valley, at the foot of the Sierra Cristal.

A la primera, me enamoró esa vista desde la cima de cada uno de los penachos sobresaliendo a la neblina matutina o danzando entre ellas como si fueran siluetas de gigantes. Desde entonces estudié el terreno, localicé caminos que me podían llevar a crestas con vistas privilegiadas. En ocasiones, hubo que caminar varios kilómetros en las mañanas frías junto a la ligera llovizna que propiciaba la densa niebla, protegiendo el equipo fotográfico para alcanzar la imagen deseada. Muchas veces al llegar al lugar ya la magia había desaparecido, en otras ocasiones la realidad superaba la imaginación de este fotógrafo.

From the first moment, I was captivated by the view—each palm crown rising above the morning mist or dancing within it like silhouettes of giants. From then on, I studied the terrain, tracing paths that could lead me to ridges with privileged views. At times, it meant walking several kilometers through cold mornings and light drizzle that thickened the fog, all while protecting my camera gear to reach the image I was after. Often, by the time I arrived, the magic had already vanished. But on other occasions, reality surpassed the imagination of this photographer.

Fue casi una persecución implacable: calcular las horas para despertar y el tiempo que me tomaría llegar al lugar apropiado, preparar el equipo, invitar algunos amigos (solo en ocasiones y los que pesaban que no estaba loco) cuando los lugares se antojaban algo recónditos y desconocidos, entre otros preparativos que formaban parte inseparable de la caza de la foto.

It was almost an unrelenting pursuit: calculating the hour to wake up and the time it would take to reach the right spot, preparing the gear, occasionally inviting a few friends (only those who didn’t think I was crazy) when the locations felt remote and unfamiliar—along with other preparations that became inseparable from the hunt for the photograph.

Así, con ese afán y energía se fue consolidando una serie fotográfica que comenzó por la neblina asombrosa (para mi, era algo normal para los lugareños) que envuelve al valle, en otras ocasiones los palmares que adornan las laderas de las loma; pero se convirtió en la abstracción de la palma y la niebla sin más paisaje, en la conjugación de esos dos elementos naturales.

Thus, with that drive and energy, a photographic series gradually took shape—beginning with the astonishing mist (astonishing to me, though ordinary to the locals) that envelops the valley, and at times the palm groves adorning the hillsides. But it eventually became an abstraction of the palm and the mist, stripped of any broader landscape—just the fusion of those two natural elements.

Hoy puedo decir que conozco más el valle que muchos de los que en él nacieron. Hemos sacado fotos de lugares como: "Las Siete Vueltas de San Benito", "Loma Blaca", "Camino de la Lombriz", "Mangá", "Joturo", "Jarahueca", "Mícara", "Sierra Cristal", "Bolaño", entre muchos otros. Pero ha sido unánime las expresiones de asombros de todos al ver la colección completa de fotos. En muchos ha evocado sus años de escuala o las etapas de recogida de café en las laderas de esas lomas que nos regalan vistas de ensueño.

Today I can say I know the valley better than many who were born in it. We've taken photos of places like “Las Siete Vueltas de San Benito,” “Loma Blaca,” “Camino de la Lombriz,” “Mangá,” “Joturo,” “Jarahueca,” “Mícara,” “Sierra Cristal,” “Bolaño,” among many others. And the expressions of awe have been unanimous when people see the full photo collection. For many, it has stirred memories of their school years or the coffee harvest seasons on the slopes of those hills that offer dreamlike views.

La Naturaleza es increíble, de eso nunca he tenido dudas; pero hoy puedo confirmar que Mayarí Arriba es un lugar privilegiado ¡Seguiremos descubriéndolo!

The Nature is incredible—I've never doubted that. But today I can say with certainty that Mayarí Arriba is a truly privileged place. We’ll keep on discovering it!
