I do not know how to thread this tale, or these fragments of tales, unbound yet orbiting the same sun: the difficult mementos of the photographer. Yesterday, by chance, I revisited a piece I had written long ago, when I first stepped into the world of photography with a humble little camera that felt like treasure, and with a hunger to devour the world and grow within it. Back then, my dreams leaned more toward prosperity than artistry; no profound visions had yet stirred, nor had I tasted the bitterness of disenchantment. Clients had just begun to arrive, and I believed the work lived in laughter and joy. Truly, most of the time one must dwell in happiness, for otherwise the images wilt; love must be poured into every instant when the photographer hides behind the lens to capture a moment that will never return.

But now, with years upon my shoulders and the weary weight of my gear, I carry stories that froze me, silenced me, and forced me to reconsider the meaning of photography and the gravity of pressing the shutter. I leave traces of these memories so they cannot fade, though they will never leave me; the images remain vivid, as if born yesterday. I could linger on the mother who wished to capture her bedridden son of fifteen, unaware of the world around him; or the parents who came to collect the last photographs of their one-year-old child, lost to a cruel accident; or the mother who received portraits of her three daughters, all marked by illness, knowing they would be her only remembrance. These are heavy stories, yet I will not choose them for this piece. Instead, I turn to the one that holds the essence of the project “Alma.”

One day, the manager of the II Frente hotel reached out to me—a place of beauty I had often chosen as the stage for my commercial photographs. His call startled me, for it had never come before. He asked if I might join a modest gathering, supported by the town’s self-employed workers. The occasion was the second anniversary of a social project named “Almas.” Yet it was no ordinary project: it united teachers, doctors, nurses, psychologists, and other guardians of health and learning, and—most poignant of all—a group of children battling cancer, patients of Santiago de Cuba’s oncology wards.

A chill swept through my mind. For weeks, tension held me captive; sleep grew shallow, haunted by the approach of that day. My thoughts circled endlessly, returning always to the same place. Still, I knew I must summon courage, gather strength, and gift those children a day radiant with joy—a day that could shine against the shadow of their struggle.

My first astonishment came when I met the professionals of the project: a circle of youth, radiant and alive, brimming with boundless energy. Behind them, children—fragile yet luminous—who, despite their burdens, embraced the moment. Perhaps it was innocence shielding them from the weight of their reality, though some already bore the scars, bitter imprints they would carry and learn to endure. Yet what prevailed were smiles, genuine and unrestrained, blooming with each surprise the day unveiled. Clowns scattered laughter like confetti; tears welled in the eyes of adults moved by such joy. Sweets appeared, though some could not taste them—those were gifted delight in other forms. Dances, games, the innocence of play… slowly the air transformed into festivity. Gratitude, pure and unmeasured, poured upon all of us who had offered fragments of our time and resources. And yet, what we gave was so small compared to the vast happiness those children deserve.

All is now memory, all consigned to the past, yet the living echo of each soul and the boundless love of that team endures. I breathed deeply and surrendered to the lens, capturing every fleeting instant so they might carry away a treasury of images, rich and enduring. It was my homage to them, a testament to their devotion, a way to lend visibility to a project that longs for light. From that day blossomed friendships, alliances of support across Santiago de Cuba, especially in Mayarí Arriba. And yes, we met again, and yes, I became—almost—the group’s photographer in that place. Emotions surged in those days, and one truth crystallized: that even when sorrow shadows the work, the photographer must pour out his best, so that memory itself may live on within the “Almas.”
