"Know thyself"

Socrates didn't just make this crucial statement to appeal to the public. No. It was a statement for all existing, thinking beings, every being subjected to passion, emotions, reasoning, desire, etc.

In that moment of realization of one's existence, one should know their limitations to life, what they are capable of doing and not doing.

Socrates- 'know thyself' boils into our ability to feel too, not just to think, if we take a bit of our time to look at our surroundings, the world we all live in today, we would find out that most of our unsolved problems are still there because we have not been able to realize ourselves. We have not been able to train our minds, feelings, and desires, and that's why we have large numbers of murders walking within our midst, in our streets, in our neighborhood why?_ because this number of people have refused or have not learned the valuable skills of controlling oneself.

Psychologists use the rather ponderous term 'metacognition' to refer to an awareness of thought process and 'meta mood' to mean awareness of one's own emotions, and I must agree on this with Danie Goleman in his book "Emotional Intelligence" where he calls it self-awareness.

When one comes to terms with self-awareness, he realizes the cons and odds of his life. One comes to realize how much childhood experiences affect them, and unfortunately, if this experience were aligned with traumas then it stays for a lifetime if not attended to immediately.
And sometimes one might not even take note of them as these ugly experiences become the order of their lives.

Just like the story of David Grey and James Grey, the two twins had the misfortune of witnessing the most disturbing act from their Dad who had molested and killed their Mom right in front of them. And at a very tender age of 10, they both grow up with the mindset that women were tools for men's pleasures and any attempt of refusal means the end of their lives.

David Grey being the elder of the twins grew up with that mentally till he was an adult, he found pleasure in killing and degrading the weaker gender that in less than a year he had murdered his three wives on different occasions. Of course, he was caught and sentenced to life imprisonment, later on he was diagnosed with a mental disorder.

However James Grey discovered his tendency early enough, though he didn't kill anyone but his brutal way of handling situations when he was angry wasn't ideal, he would beat his lover still he was satisfied with the amount of injuries he had inflicted on her. But he was willing to work on himself because he realized what he was capable of, he wanted to be saved so he looked for ways to solve these problems.

The difference is clear while James Grey realized himself early enough to stop trauma from eating up the remains of his life. David Grey was too lost in himself to realize the damage he had caused.
Now James Grey is married happily with two kids, something he thought was impossible to accomplish.

Self-awareness comes with the ability to be conscious of one's actions, like those things you find yourself doing that are wrong, and only your desire takes more control over your reasoning. Those are things that one should reflect on, looking for ways to correct those actions and acts.

Discovery about self-awareness

One important discovery about self-awareness, it leads to self-potential. It's like we release our hidden qualities because we know we have them, therefore we can use them to the likes and beneficial aspects of our lives. Another discovery is that self-awareness brings about leadership awareness, flexibility, and creativity.

In Robin Sharma's work on The Leaders with no Title_ "Each one of us has this internal reservoir of leadership potential. We just need to become aware of it and then really own it. Man, if people in every organization from companies to government to communities to schools embrace this concept the whole world would transform."

To conclude, self-awareness is just the key to realizing who you are. Know thyself_ according to Socrates was a message of discovery that makes us who we are. The moment we have that key, challenges of life, traumas, and societal expectations wouldn't look so difficult to overcome.

The flowers represent the beauty in one's journey after attending self-awareness.

Humans are designed to adapt to any situations or condition, we can become anything we want but there is a price, which is training ourselves towards achieving that thing.

If only we will take our time to build ourselves, we would discover that all what we have being killing ourselves for has been deposited right inside of us for long.
