Double Celebration
Hello Dear Hivers,
We have all been busy getting everything ready. From decorations to invitations, arrangements with friends — everything had to be perfect. But through all this hustle, we made sure our plan remained secret from Mama. One friend of hers was in contact with us; we told her about the surprise, and made her promise not to say anything to Mama. It was all hush-hush.
Here’s what made the preparations more challenging: we were staying in Cebu at the time, but Mama was in our home province of Leyte. She was far away, so we couldn’t easily buy a dress for her and try it on to see if it fit. We worried that what we bought might not fit at all.
Then came a small stroke of luck. My older Brother and Mama nearly the same body figure. So we had my older Brother haha try on the dress we planned for Mama. She was measured, and we bought the dress based on her measurements. When finally the dress arrived and we all went to Leyte, Mama tried it on. To our joy and relief, it fit perfectly. It was like the dress was made for her. We told her we were just going out for dinner — nothing more. That was the excuse so she would wear the dress without suspicion.
The day of the event arrived. Mama was in her pretty dress, she had her makeup on, her hair done — looking radiant, glowing. While she got ready, I messaged someone, “Mama is ready now.” At that moment, my younger sibling, the one who had been in Australia, also got ready. By the way, she wasn’t at home at that time; she was staying in the same hotel where the birthday celebration was going to happen. That way, so she wouldn’t be seen by Mama earlier. The hotel was discreetly chosen as the venue for the party.
Then we drove Mama to the hotel. When she arrived, she asked, puzzled, “Why are we in a hotel, not a restaurant?” That was odd to her, because she expected us to eat in a restaurant. She was already suspicious. But she didn’t know what was waiting for her behind that door.
We opened the door and—surprise! The hotel lobby/venue was filled with people, nearly all her friends. Mama’s eyes went wide. She stood there, shocked. And then, there was a moment of hesitation, a moment suspended in time. She looked for familiar faces, perhaps for my sibling, but still did not see her.
We guided her to a seat, and the host announced, “Time to blow out the candles!” But there was no cake yet. Then suddenly, the door behind the stage opened, and my sibling from Australia entered — carrying the birthday cake, along with her husband. Mama’s jaw dropped. It was the perfect surprise: seeing her daughter whom she thought far away, standing right there, walking in with big smiles and the cake — something she never expected in that moment. She was overcome with emotion. Tears welled up in her eyes; laughter and gasps mingled. Friends were clapping, cheering, people calling her name.
Mama was so surprised. It was more than a party; it was joy, love, reunion. The double meaning of the day—celebrating our youngest sibling coming home after two years and Mama’s 70th birthday—all came together in that one beautiful moment.
We all felt incredibly thankful: thankful to my siblings for being so cooperative and trusting, thankful to every single person who helped us — those who travelled, those who kept the secret, the friends who prepared food or helped decorate, those who coordinated with the hotel without letting anything slip.
Seeing Mama’s happiness, seeing her embrace my sibling, seeing the smile that lit her face — it was priceless. These are the moments we will treasure forever.
This double celebration reminded us how strong our family bonds are, how much love holds us together even when miles apart. And it showed Mama just how deeply she is loved, celebrated—not only for the years she has lived, but for the love she gives every day.
Thank you dear Hivers for taking the time to read. Until my next blog.
