Colorful photos from Hoi An, and a trip there the other day.

Hell Friends,

Hoi An, Vietnam is an enchanting little town that is filled with rich culture and history. Situated on the coast of the South China Sea, this quaint town is renowned for its old-world charm and traditional Vietnamese architecture. The rustic beauty of this stunning destination is truly captivating, with its colorful streets lined with ancient buildings, vibrant markets, and lush greenery. From cycling along the river to exploring its many temples and pagodas, there are plenty of things to do and see here.

When I think of Hoi An, I'm filled with a plethora of emotions. It's the town that I lived in for 6 months when I first arrived in Vietnam, so naturally, it holds a special place in my heart. Every so often, I make a journey back to Hoi An, and it's like the town's warm embrace is wrapping itself around me. Strolling through the laneways, I'm taken back to my days of first stepping into the country, and the excitement I felt as I began exploring the culture. There's a certain nostalgia that follows me around Hoi An, and it's a feeling I'm always happy to be reunited with.

Yesterday, the weather was great, so I drove from Danang to Hoi An in the morning. The First stop was Hi5 bar! This is a shop that I helped to make a logo for and some graphic design.

They had an aquarium in the bar, and I watched the fish for a bit, wondering about what life must be life for a fish. I wondered if they considered the world outside of the tank, with its wider variety of sights and sounds. Did they long to explore beyond the boundaries of the aquarium, to feel the warm embrace of the ocean's waters? Or perhaps they were content with the safe, familiar confines of their home, with its colorful coral and plentiful food.

It was impossible to know, but I watched them swim in circles, and I couldn't help but feel a certain kinship with them. I was sure that beyond the glass, there was a story waiting to be told.

It was the time of the year again! The time for people to come together and celebrate the Lunar New Year - TET. The charming town of Hoi An was all decked up with decorations and lights, the streets were lined with vibrant floral arrangements and the air was full of joy and anticipation.

The locals too, were in full swing, adorning their streets and homes with even more ornamental displays, which made for a truly stunning sight. The festive atmosphere was further enhanced by the fragrant scents of flowers and locals shouting driving cheers and more.

In Hoi An, Flowers are a big part of the TET festivals and are used to decorate homes and businesses all around the city. Brightly coloured blooms are placed in vases, strung up in garlands, and even scattered on the streets to create a vibrant atmosphere that celebrates the time of renewal and new beginnings.

People often give bouquets of yellow chrysanthemums and pink lotus blossoms to their loved ones as a sign of their affection, while red lilies and orange roses are used to adorn temples and altars in honour of the gods.

As the locals celebrate the New Year, flowers bring a sense of joy and peace to the streets and serve as a reminder of the beauty of life.

My eyes instantly gravitated towards these peculiarly bright and vivid fake flowers, and I couldn't help but be transfixed by their beauty. I felt an odd stirring in my soul - a mix of emotions that I was unable to place.

On one hand, I felt a pang of envy for their durability and ability to stay in bloom all year round, while on the other, I wondered if their beauty was too good to be true. It was as if they were too perfect, and I couldn't help but feel that something was amiss. At the same time, I couldn't deny the allure of these marvellous creations, and I couldn't help but admire their over the top color.

  • What do you think of fake flowers? A sin or a win?

Walking through the bustling streets of Hoi An, one might come across a number of interesting, unique trinkets for sale. From handmade ceramic bowls and intricately carved wooden figurines to colorful paper lanterns and embroidered silk scarves, there are a wide variety of souvenirs for sale. But perhaps one of the most popular items for sale on the streets of Hoi An are the luck cat and luck pig statues. Both of these statues are made from different materials, such as stone, ceramic, and wood, and are believed to bring good luck to the person who owns them. You can find these statues in a variety of sizes, colors, and designs, making it easy to find one that fits your individual tastes.

The best part of Hoi An is the charming lanterns, like the bright yellow lanterns in the photo! The colors are a vibrant contrast to the peaceful streets and alleyways of this magical city. At night, these lanterns light up the town, creating an atmosphere of enchantment and wonder.

As the sun goes down, the colors of the lanterns mix and mingle, producing a beautiful kaleidoscope of hues. The sight is something to behold and will stay with you long after you've left this enchanting town.

They had an aquarium in the bar, and I watched the fish for a bit, wondering about what life must be life for a fish. I wondered if they considered the world outside of the tank, with its wider variety of sights and sounds.

That's the "impact" quote right there.

And it's the reason I jumped at the chance to spend some time overseas back in 2017. Here in the states, we have everything; mountains, deserts, jungles and an endless number of attractions that keep us planted right here on familiar US terra firma.

There's a whole big wide world out there just waiting to be discovered, and your beautiful photos are a testament to that.

I'm curious as to what made you choose Hoi An as your base to settle in? The sights, sounds and vivid splashes of color likely factored into the decision into making that place your home. My favorite photo is of the shimmering, golden lanterns at the end.

It seems you're like one of those fish whose horizons were widened by making a splash in a much larger pond outside of the sheltered coves that we each call home. :)
