Cool Cars and Trucks

(Edited)

A few days ago, I briefly wrote about a trip to Silverwood Theme Park to see their car show on Labor Day weekend. I have a lot more snapshots from that occasion, though, and decided to practice my editing in GIMP to share a few more of them here.

Can anyone honestly say anything bad about the early Mustangs? The design just looks good. But does this look better against a color backdrop, or with everything else in grayscale, too? I played a bit with the curves, and of course I zeroed out the color saturation.

I also snapped a photo of this gray Chevrolet pickup, so let's give it the same treatment. Does it look better in contrast to its surroundings, or when monochrome is all there is? This has more of a flat primer gray, so the shape doesn't really pop as much. Even on a cloudy day, most cars had reflections on their glossy coats. Not this truck.

Let's try something with more character. Not everything was beautifully polished, or even primed for future paint. Some had patina, like this International pickup.

Lastly, on the most extreme end of elegance, let's take a look at this rat rod. I don't know what it started out as, or what has happened to it since, but there's a certain cool factor to these one-of-a-kind outlandish custom jobs. It's long and low, so I changed the aspect ratio of my images to match.

And there you have it, four different automobiles in colo[u]r and black-and-white. What do you like? What would you compose or edit differently? Did you know the Checker Cab Company made their own cars and sold them to the public? Please feel free to join the conversation!

Nice rail job!
Thing is, those old 30s cars were just sitting around as junk back then, so you could just cut them up for nothin. Not like today when they are scarce.

And the really did a good job with the looks of the mustang. Whey can't we have nice cars now?

I wrote a blog about that today.

Have you seen the live action Speed Racer ? Notice the background when they are driving. Cool cars everywhere.

New cars are such a mixed bag. On one hand, we have better safety, better technology, much more longevity, and advances in both power and efficiency. On the other hand, we have regulatory overreach, nanny state surveillance built in, and so. much. bloat. Cars are huge and heavy, and designs have converged to meet government standards instead of making something unique. The little MG and Fiat roadsters simply can't be sold today. Not even the original Mustang size and style would be legal.

Gotta love those old Mustangs!

Fan of older cars, in general, from the days you could actually fix cars without needing a degree in computer science and a bunch of fancy diagnostic gear.

I have only one bad thing to say about older Mustangs, it is, that I do not own one. But my favorite is an old truck, I used to own a 1956 Ford until my ex was drunk and crashed it into cars that were parked for an AA meeting, I told him that he should take it as a sign.

Yes, it is bad that I do not own one, it would be good if I did have one. :)

I have more. These are just the ones I though made the most interesting progression of color and B&W. Another post may be forthcoming, but I make no promises.

Depends on the look you're going for. The monochrome has a classy vintage feel, you could do that or sepia if you wanted to make it look like the photo was as old as the vehicles and I like how these ones turned out, they look like they could have come from an old photo exhibition.

As much as I appreciate decent monochrome and black and white I have a very strong bias to colour XD

Maybe I should try editing another pic to look like a faded photo that has been sitting in a shoe box for 40 years. Fade out the cyan and yellow so magenta dominates more. Add grain. Mess more with the contrast.

I prefer the old Chevy truck in black and white, because that's the way photos looked back when it was new. But the old International I prefer in color because I can more easily see what has happened to it.
