Market Friday - Discovering a Jewel on a Casual Day.

Today is #MarketFriday, a project initiated by @dswigle, and this post is my contribution to this project for this week.

Last weekend, we felt like just having a calm, casual day on Saturday.

It was a cool cloudy, day. I thought it would be a good idea to go for a nice, steady walk through the forest in the Umhlanga Nature Reserve. The reserve has been closed for quite some time since the looting in 2021. I wanted to see if we could get access to it again, and then maybe treat ourselves to nice soft-serve ice cream at STEERS afterward.

Umhlanga Rocks is a popular holiday destination in South Africa, facing the warm water of the Indian Ocean on the east coast of South Africa.

It offers great accommodation and lots of activities to do and to see.

The Umhlanga Nature Reserve is located right at the end of the road that is filled with luxurious holiday resorts.

We found parking outside the Breakers Resort, the very last resort right at the end of the road next to the reserve.

Here is a street view of the resort from the front.

Current accommodation rates at the time of writing this post range between $429.00 to $574.00 for 6 nights at the Breakers Resort.

As the Umhlanga Nature Reserve was still out of bounds, we decided to go for a casual stroll around the area.

We took one of the walkways that lead down to the beach, passing in between some of these holiday resorts.

This enabled us to go around the resort and we ended up behind the Breakers Resort, from where you can get access to the beach.

In the next photo, you can see the Breakers Resort from behind.

They also have their own private fun/entertainment area here.

DSC_3873.jpg

You also find a beach volleyball area here for the volleyball fans.

DSC_3853.jpg

From here you also have a beautiful view of the nature reserve and the wetland bordering the holiday resort.

DSC_3857.jpg

Standing here, you are surrounded by beautiful greenery and colorful flowers...

DSC_3866.jpg

DSC_3867.jpg

But this is where we also made a great discovery...a new walking trail that we haven't seen before (which would lead us to another great discovery).

This "nature walking trail" is maintained by the Breakers Resort but it is open to the public. From here you can get access to both the beach and the nature (walking) trail

DSC_3877.jpg

This trail then led us to the discovery of another jewel that we didn't even know existed...the Forest Cafe, with Bike and Bean being appointed to operate the Forest Cafe located at the northern end of the boardwalk, which extends from the Umhlanga Promenade into the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve.

This is the Forest Cafe, right in the center of the forest, away from all the hustle and bustle of city life. Here you can sit down and choose from a variety of meal and beverage options while you enjoy the peace...the tranquility of nature all around you.

DSC_3904.jpg

The prices on the menu ranged from R32.00 ($1.80) for something to drink (a small Americano), to R56.00 ($3.16) for a nice meal (Chicken Mayo-and-Avo Baguette).

Not expecting to make this wonderful discovery, we left our wallets in the car and could only feast our eyes on this lovely little place.

Believe me, we will return...or how do they say? "We'll be
back!"😄

From here, this is the view of the boardwalk going back. This is the view and the atmosphere that you will enjoy over the next 1 KM (with some frequent views over the ocean) before you arrive back at the Breakers Resort and other holiday resorts.

DSC_3907-2.jpg

So, we arrived back at the car, and seeing that our wallets remained in the car until now, we decided to still make that pit stop at STEERS as planned.

DSC_3923.jpg

You have a choice of where you would like to go...

DSC_3924.jpg

We stuck with our decision of STEERS and we had the place to ourselves...

IMG_20220918_133122.jpg

We both treated ourselves to a delicious STEERS soft-serve ice cream (yes, both my wife and I are still suckers for soft-serve ice creams...lol) and the total cost involved for the 2 ice creams was a whopping R15.80 ($0.89)...lol.

IMG_20220918_133206-2.jpg

From there we started the 35KM journey back home.

And that's it for today, folks.

Thank you for reading my post! I do appreciate it!

Ouch! Sorry. I too was looking forward to the sumptuous Forest Cafe meal 😭

This is such great Market Friday content, and the pictures are amazing.
The ice cream too could not have chosen a better time to exist, lol.

Yes, that was "ouch"...lol! We didn't even think of taking our wallets with us as we thought we would only be strolling around some of the holiday resorts.

Then we found the boardwalk, leading into the forest. Take note... "leading into the forest"... We expected to have a great experience in nature...in the forest, but we did not expect to find the Forest Cafe in the middle of the forest...lol. But now we know it's there!

I'm glad you enjoyed my post! Thank you for your warm feedback. I do appreciate it!

Have a great day, @atyourservice👍!

😂Yeah it would be completely nuts to anticipate a cafe in a forest. And, I think that’s a sales problem they might want to look into, there should probably be a sign that says: The forest is full of surprises, grab your purses!’ Or something.
Maybe you can suggest it to them when you return to the forest.

Have a wonderful weekend. 💕

This looks like a great ride... That resort was very luxurious, lucky those who can stay there... but surely they don't eat delicious ice cream like the one you paid for LOL.

I hope you got fun. Thanks for sharing your experience. Have a great weekend ❣️.

Yes, the resorts in that area are all luxurious, but the ice cream still made the day!

We had lots of fun, thanks @lauramica👍!

Thanks for stopping by and for giving your feedback! I do appreciate it!

You must have a great weekend too!!

Burn off the calories taking the walk, then top up with a soft-serve that is doing it in a style I call rewarding ☺️

Really a pleasant little shop in the middle of the forest you found there, now you know for next time an early morning coffee perhaps.

Tourism picking up slightly again, it is good to see time well spent preparing forest walks and new hidden delightful spots.

Yes, it seems so. And I think that the boardwalk is a great attraction for tourism. Nature conservation was clearly taken into consideration when they built it. I've done some searches on the internet and found they have spent a fortune in planning and building it. And it is neat and well maintained as well!

Many areas are starting to be more considerate toward nature, hopefully will be maintained and not stolen for housing projects close by.

Nooooo! I cannot believe you left your wallet in the car, but, that makes perfect sense. Next time, push a bill in your pocket. You know, just in case there is another cafe in the middle of the jungle.

Yikes.

You just don't know what you will find, do you? What a beautiful place! You really have a penchant for finding these laces, don't you? I have to say that Nature Trail Beach looked like it could host a few crocs in there. I am not game. I will take the trail instead. Then I checked back and see you are on the ocean, so no croc, right?

I wonder if that Breakers Hotel is related to the one in Miami? They are exquisite places and it is very upscale. I haven't been there in probably five years. It is also 1,000 miles from me here. :)

Oh, just look at that ice cream! I'm in!!! Yummy! Thank you! It is always so fun following you! Your support is always so appreciated! Thank you for participating in #MarketFriday! I appreciate the time and effort that goes into putting a post together for the challenge. It is with great pleasure that I read through and realize how much we have all tried to include things in our world that may be unique to the area. I have learned so much about the different cultures of the world, especially the small things that go unnoticed except by those looking for them. Life is interesting, wherever you are, whatever you are doing. I hope the week has found you healthy and happy, as we all look to prosper in our way of life.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Yes, I wanted to kick myself. From now on I'll go looking for cafes in the jungle...LOL!

I love it when we can find new places.

Yes, in general, no crocs around...lol. But I can share this with you...Between 2010 and 2013, a crocodile has been spotted several times at the Blue Lagoon, which also happens to be the place where the Duzi Canoe Marathon normally has its finish line. Apparently, it was shot and killed in 2013. Here is a video taken by someone who actually saw the crocodile from a distance. This is at the Blue Lagoon, at the Umgeni River where it mounts out into the ocean. It is south of where we were, between Umhlanga Rocks and Durban.

Earlier this year, a crocodile was spotted higher up north, in the Tongaat area, after we had those vicious floods.

Several years back, we went up to St. Lucia to spend New Year's day. We were looking for a spot away from the crowds and also found a spot close to a river just before mounting into the sea. I showed my wife the beautiful, smooth rocks, sticking out above the surface of the water.

We went for a walk and as we came back, I noticed something different about the "rocks". They were closer...and they were hippos...lol. And by then, on a small little "island" (a sandbank in the river, I then also noticed some crocodiles lying on the sandbank enjoying the midmorning sun.

We rather headed back to the car...lol. I'll see if I can dig up the photos as I took some photos...but it was quite a while back.

But don't stress, this is normally not at busy/public beaches or parks or recreational areas on the rivers. It's just good to be observant in general...lol!

I don't know if there is a connection between the Breakers Hotel here in Umhlanga and the one in Miami. That would be interesting to know...

You clearly have been to the one in Miami. Was it a pleasant experience?

Yes, that ice cream was a pleasant and joyful experience after the walk. Plain, simple, but delicious...lol.

I'm glad you enjoyed my post and thank you for your support! I really do appreciate it, @dswigle!

Have a great weekend!

That walk looks beautiful, to bad you left the purse in the car. But like you say… you will be back 😉
Such a stunning view. And the boardwalk looks nicely maintained.
The ice cream was well deserved hehehe 🤭
