Market Friday - Ballito Farmer's Market
Today is #MarketFriday, a project initiated by @dswigle, and this post is my contribution to this project for this week.

Last weekend was a long weekend here in South Africa. Friday, June 16, was a public holiday. We decided to head out to Ballito for the weekend. Ballito is situated on the Northcoast of Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, about 52 KM north of Durban.
We arrived on Friday and enjoyed a casual day, going for a stroll or two.
During our walk in the late afternoon, as the sun was going down, we walked along the walkway just above the beach.
We came across this friendly guy who was serving coffee to his customers with a big, friendly smile on his face! Even though we were just passing by, he was keen to give us that same friendly smile.

There were nice tables with chairs neatly set out where people got served coffee. Some people preferred taking their coffee along on their walk or sitting down on one of the benches close by to sit in peace while enjoying the view over the ocean.
I didn't want to intrude on people's privacy by taking photos of them while they were enjoying their coffee, looking out over the ocean, and having a peaceful moment while the day was coming to an end. It was a beautiful view looking out over the ocean to the east, with the sun setting behind you in the west.
So I found these three vacant benches, a typical example of the benches that can be found all along the walkway.

A little further down, we found the AL Pescatore Restaurant, looking out over the beach.

Their entrance is quite impressive and is located on the far side of the building. You walk up the stairway to get to the entrance.

Then, about 500m further down, was the Ocean Basket, also looking out over the beach.

There was lots of activity, but it was a relaxed atmosphere. The previous weekend, the Comrades Marathon took place, ending in Durban. So, there were many holiday-makers who came down the week before to attend the marathon and made it a holiday, staying over until this weekend, being a long weekend.
On Saturday, June 17, we decided to explore a bit more and we decided to go to the Ballito Farmer's Market (to get some photos for #MarketFriday of course).
But first, we went for our early morning walk along the beach again. Looking up one of the roads leading to the main road, we saw some vendors busy setting up shop for the day. Clearly, holiday-makers make up the market they are targeting.

We went back to the house we were staying in to have breakfast before going to the Farmer's Market.
Going to the market was a 15-minute drive of about 11 KM.
Arriving at the market, we parked the car and entered the market area where they have a nice playing area for the little ones.

We passed various stalls, and passing this lady's stall, she was keen to have her photo taken.

She told me that she is a designer by profession. She is designing her own clothes and then provides work for some local ladies, working in a factory where they do all the sewing to get the end product "on the shelf" for her. Apparently, all the clothing on display here are her own designs.
Walking around, just behind these displays, we saw this scene...some fun horseback rides for the kiddies.

To the far side of these stalls, I found this sculpture on display. Maybe the warrior has gone shopping, but he forgot his shopping basket...lol.

Getting a view from the front...

And then we found these beautiful Proteas

To the far end of the market was this area where people were just casually sitting around and relaxing...

Looking back over the market area...

To my left, I saw this guy who is running his brewery from this van.

Front view? Side view...? I suppose it depends on what you are looking at...the business or the vehicle?

He enjoyed a constant flow of new customers during the time we were in that area.

After this, we went back to our weekend accommodation to watch the rugby match on tv.
Late afternoon, it was of tho the beach again. We walked up to where we saw the vendors setting up shop in the morning to see what it looked like.
I took this photo in the afternoon, looking down toward the beach area.

Further down, on the beachfront, AL Pescatore is also visible again. This scene created a really nice "holiday vibe" for me.

Okay, time to admit...I didn't mention any amounts in this post. In all honesty, any form of shopping was the last thing on my mind. My wife felt the same. We just wanted to take the weekend to relax and chill. I still had #MarketFriday on my mind though...lol. So I thought I would still publish this as I do consider it to be "market-related".
The whole idea was to get some nice photos over the course of the weekend, but other than that, we just wanted to leave everything behind and relax.
And that's all for today, folks.
Thank you for reading my post! I do appreciate it!
These benches seem perfect - cup of coffee in hand and a view of the sea!
Oh, I agree! They are perfect! We spent quite some time there just enjoying the view of the sea. We just didn't have the coffee in hand...lol, because we didn't take our wallets along, thinking we were just going for a walk!
Enjoy your weekend, @tatdt!
What a cool market… so much to do and see.

I like taking my brewery with me when I travel! What a fun brewery that was! The van was a style unique to me! Doing a bang-up business! Do you know what kind of van that is, or has it been modified?
What a nice little getaway this was, I can easily slide into this kind of vibe and be happy! (I just noticed! I didn't realize you were a dreemie!) Anyway, I like that first restaurant on the beach. Al Prescatore looked like it had potential! Have you ever been inside? I am curious about how it was decorated? I would give ocean basket a try, I do love my seafood and there is a nice selection there.
The coffee guy was so fun, wasn't he? I really love people that are so full of joy, they exude it! The benches there are welcoming for a nice sit down while you are drinking that coffee, even if you didn't get one. :) Still, a nice place to sit. I am pretty sure the beach was hopping on that three-day weekend, it is always the place to go.
I love proteas! They are so incredibly stunning. I can never get enough of them!
I like how they threw the bales out for people to find their own little seats. A nice place altogether. I look at that woman who designs her own clothes and wonder if fate had taken her somewhere else, would she become someone bigger? Then again, if we are measuring success, she already is, with he own label, a factory to put them together, and a worker. To me, her exuberant attitude and striking out her own label is a huge achievement. And happiness? I am not sure she could be any happier than she looks now. Inner peace. It's always a winner.
Thanks so much for always posting such wonderful events, experiences and parts of your life. It is always a joy to read.
#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.
Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday
Edit: Did I not hit the post on this?? Sorry! I came back because I know I didn't mention the horse and sulky? I am not sure if that is what they call them there, but it carries the rider for racing. Anyway, it was a great site! Thank you again!
That brewery van really got my attention too! I couldn't make out what kind of van it was. The emblem on the doors (and a sticker in the front window) just say "Old Tin Can - Travelling Artisan's Bar". I get the impression it is modified, yes.
It was a lovely little getaway indeed...and yes, I'm a dreemie...lol! And yes, I agree, Al Pescatore looks like it has a lot of potential, but we didn't go inside. The previous weekend they ran the Comrades Marathon down here, then we had a 4-day week with the majority of people taking leave over those days. That means that people came down in their masses for the Comrades Marathon and made it a holiday, going through the week and including the long weekend. So yes, the beach was hopping, as you say...lol. But like we said, outside, on the beaches, there was a lot of activity, but it was a relaxed "holiday atmosphere". But facing the crowds in restaurants...? We weren't up for it... The whole idea of our little getaway was to get away from the crowds...the busyness...
But yes, will try it out in the future. The Ocean Basket...? We have one close to where we live as well and we've been there a couple of times. It's a nice place to go to, but we are not all that big on seafood... Yes, believe that... We love (and live by) the ocean...but we're not big on seafood...lol!
I'm glad to hear that you are also a Protea lover! They are awesome!
The coffee guy was a treat! He was so friendly and spontaneous!
The market was awesome! And yes, I agree with you. The woman who designs her own clothes seems to be very happy and content. But as you say, who knows where she can end up if she gets the right opportunity? I was thinking about how I could maybe assist or support her when I saw her enthusiasm. I didn't have a notepad or anything on me, so I offered to take her detail and mention it in my post. Who knows, maybe some local people read my post and go support her. Some community members are into sewing and the clothing industry and maybe the right person notices her through this post and who knows what could come from that.
But you know what happened? I didn't have my reading glasses with me, s I couldn't make out a thing on my phone. So I gave my phone to her and asked her to make a recording on my phone, leaving her contact detail where people could contact her. She took my phone and did the whole "recording", looking quite excited about it. But when we got back home after the weekend and I started searching for her recording, it was nowhere to be found... I think maybe she pressed the wrong button or something.
So, that means we will definitely have to go there again. Then I can get all the detail we need and also start going to some of the other restaurants in the area too. There are actually quite a few things that I want to go back for. Getting more information, visiting places, etc...
You were right on the spot for the post with your comment! And I appreciate it. Mentioning the horse statute, I know it as a chariot... To my understanding, they were used in warfare during ancient times, and yes, I am aware of them being used for racing as well.
I am glad to hear that you enjoy my posts! Thank you for the kind words!
Chariot was my first guess, but seemed very Greek to me! :))
Hahaha...no problem👍!
Wow! What's Rollercoaster! I didn't know what to expect next! Horseriding to gorgeous beach shots... What a lovely and activity filled post! Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to some adventuring this weekend 😊😊
Thank you for the kind words and your great feedback, @clairemobey👍!
Yes, it was a fun-filled weekend and I'm glad you enjoyed my post, all the way from horseriding to walking on the beach...😊
I hope you are going to have some great adventures this weekend! Enjoy it👍!
