another day another wet day another day in borderland : October 23 2025

this picture was taken minutes before midnight when the drizzling stopped. tokyo is wet yet again. my housemates and @wittyzell even planned to go hiking this weekend but it seems that it will also rain, another cancelled plan. the only consolation for me is the fact that it is definitely colder. tokyo is running on the lower 10s of the celsius scale. time to bring out the jackets and the coats and the fluffy things.

let us talk a little about this specific picture though, is it not pretty? it has that downtown, old urban center feels to it. the contrast between the tiled buildings were also dramatic. this was the last thing we did today, after some gym session.

alice in borderland

in the gym earlier while on the treadmill, i was actually watching this new series. to be honest, i have been watching it for the past 3 treadmill sessions but i have never talked about it. 6 episodes of alice in borderland, of which i completed them all today. 6 episodes was really too short. i was a fan of the first 2 seasons, that story had depth. but this third installment seemed a little too done.

how flat?

what do i mean by that? i was surprised by the first season, and the second season continued the excitement. there was a little cliffhanger at the end of season 2 but the story seemed complete by then. so you are left to wonder what this third season is for. this season was a little forced. i knew why they wanted to enter but i never got the resolution i wanted; it just felt flat. till now, i am still wondering if that father thing was ever resolved?

there were also so few characters, it failed to meet the grandiosity of the first two seasons. this would have been fine but with such few characters, they also failed to connect emotionally. the first season introduced you to new characters, you fell in love with them as you know them better. you even meet new characters along the way which became essential to the story. but in this season i failed to connect to most characters, there were simply not enough back story not shining moment. so when the games were played, most fatalities failed to affect the heart. i do not know them well so it was but another walk in the park when they left. no emotional connection.

even the professor story was a bit forced. why would he drag others into his little "search for truth"? that obsession was not clearly expressed nor clearly acted, i could not see how conflicted he was if he really was which i am pretty sure that was what the story wanted him to be.

prediction?!

this was the main flaw, it was predictable. at the end of the day, you know that the two main leads will survive. for the sub-cast, since you are not emotionally invested in them, you simply do not mind whoever survives. the leads were just too OP which makes everyone else too bland. it was quite clear in the first few episodes that the main leads will survive, the professor will have to choose but will eventually have a character development at the very end. and since you already know what happens to them after the games right at the start, you also know what will happen at the very end after the games. did the games changed me while watching? not really.

consolation

the callbacks to our loved characters in season 1 and 2 was the clear consolation of it all. we call it pampalubagloob in filipino. and i think those short interviews from them were even more impactful than everything that transpired for this whole season.

conclusion

alice in borderland was a very solid series, the third season was simply not needed. having another season would still be fine but please for the love of the arts, give the other characters enough backstory and conflict to work on. we need to know about these characters so we feel emotionally damaged when they are gone.

am i just too harsh? maybe.
