in search for roofs : September 25 2025

when you are asked to search for roofs, what are you supposed to consider? this was really the dilemma i had the whole day. i knew that i had to take a night photo to stay true to my nightwalker lifestyle. so here we are with a photo of the temple in the middle of the pond in ueno. i just loved how that golden roof stood out. but i do admit that it is not of the best quality, zoomed in pictures taken at night is nothing but a pain. @friendlymoose here is my entry for now.

now let me take you through the process.

from the balcony

i live in a room on the upper floors of a building. so looking down from up there, i could definitely see roofs. now here is an example of what i could see. and so i figured, i need height to capture great photos of roofs. this was the beginning of the search.

fujimizaka

the first thing i thought was this hill which supposedly could see mt fuji but the view was now blocked by apartment buildings. yes, i had to climb up these stairs to reach the spot. not only did i saw roofs, i also saw a graveyard. now this is interesting but is also spooky. i needed a better vantage point, there was not much to view. and i do not want a view of the graveyard.

unexpected open temple

now i was following this route toward a different area which i think had a vantage point. i could only see the train tracks from there, no roofs. and then i saw this other temple with an open garden viewing. but it was so dark. could you see the roof? i would have wanted to go in further, but then i heard a drunk person shouting nonsense. people were looking at him, he was acting like a lunatic although there wasn't any moon up there. i had to get away, i do not want to engage. when you are in a foreign place, you will definitely learn to step down. japan's law would protect the japanese for sure no matter how hard you cry that it was a self defense, let us avaoid getting to that point.

i found myself on top of the staircase, but there were no roofs. this new construction of a building blocked everything. no luck.

1000044647.jpg1000044648.jpg

but i did saw an interesting thing on the roof, this cat statue. it looked like a real cat! the home owner surely had some humor, kudos to him. but the roof was not the main point of this picture, it was the cat. it was of a roof, but you do not even see the roof at first glance.

roof of leaves?

1000044650.jpg1000044651.jpg

passed by the pond area of the park and found these huge trees. they do "roof" the person under it. but can i really submit this crazy concept? i still took a picture but it is way too far from the concept.

from below

after climbing up some stairs, saw this temple perched up on a hill in front. well lit! the roofs were clearly visible, i could probably do this. the only thing that prevented me though was how washed out the features of this temple was. no details of the wall, but the roof was clearly visible. and that circular tree trunk in the foreground, that is also a distraction.

(it was in the same spot where i took the golden roof temple picture while looking down at the staircase.)

the roof afar

1000044655.jpg1000044656.jpg

i was about to call it a day. traversed my usual route, saw the lighted fountains and was mesmerized. and then i saw that big block of building from afar. i went closer and checked if it would register well on screen.

1000044658.jpg

zoomed in significantly. those were interesting roofs for sure, i could see the sides and the undersides a bit. but the whole top part was pitch black.

i headed straight home after this shot. saw no other roofs of interest.

bonus

1000044649.jpg

it was 2 or 3 days ago where i saw the red spider lilies as recognized in the anime demon slayer. but in the anime, the main antagonist was searching for the blue variant of this flower. well i am not in search of the flower, but i happened to pass by a white version.

as always, AMPING KANUNAY!

I loved this trip looking for roofs, and indeed I saw nothing but the cat, because it really seems to be real.

that cat was acting as a guard. but it can't move out of place though. 🤣
