rice and food security : July 3 2025

here we are again with big machines and big machines attract big boys. doesn't this machine make you curious? it really looked so complicated but i also don't know what it does.

here is the bigger picture though. there seemed to be a tank at the back for mixing things i suppose. i really don't know.

but anyways, i was doing a treadmill session and finally completed the cooking netflix show. the white spoon chef made a dessert out of tteokbokki, that looked very innovative. who would have thought of that? i would give him extra points for that. the black spoon chef made a main dish of lamb meat and heart; he also used lots of fruits for the sauces. i am pretty sure it must have been delicious, but it just did not entice me. yes, the black spoon chef won. i am happy for him, but i was more curious of the other chef. another netflix series completed. now what do i watch next?

after the treadmill session, i went to the groceries and found this cheaper sack of rice at 4kg. it was imported from california which got me curious. japanese rice coming from california? i did not know that the united states was even producing rice. and for japan, a rice farming country, to import rice from the united states is also something else. i am not complaining though, rice prices in japan has been increasing for the past months so importing cheaper rice from another country is a win for me. japan is on the verge of a rice crisis, and having no rice on the dinner plate is not an option in a rice eating country. so, any help would be fine i guess.

so why is rice getting more expensive in japan? one factor they reported was that there was just less harvest. and causes for that less harvest was the extreme heat japan has been experiencing, and that the number of farmers are just declining. no one wants to farm anymore, most of the young population are moving to the city. farming is just too difficult and less rewarding. i guess i can't blame them, farmers are not getting a lot of reward for the heavy work they do. and this is true not only in japan but also in other countries.

so how do we solve this? give more benefits to farmers i guess. easier said than done though. i for myself can't imagine living in a farm for my whole life. it could be exciting for a small time, but i would get bored and would grumble the whole time in the long run. so good luck to the governments, i do not know how to solve this problem.
