earthquake reflections | reflection hunters contest 226 : July 2 2025

i had a pretty bad headache and that forced me to just take it slow, and rest more today. headache keeps me down, it is something i lose to. so at the end of the working hours, i took some sweet rest time then went to the groceries to replenish supplies.

as i passed by this apartment complex, i realized how unassumingly pretty the scene was. i mean, the building was simple, but what i saw was the reflections on one wall of the nearby building. that wall captured the 4 storied lighted apartment, and even the darker building across it. that wall was just too smooth to reflect everything. and the dark and light elements played well in the composition.

now this reflection was just the start because we were also reflecting on other things as we proceeded for a simple nightwalk. a major topic that came was about this fear of a major earthquake predicted to shake japan this weekend. let me just share this to our non-japan readers.

a prediction recently sprouted in japan regarding a major earthquake that will shake the country in july. my housemate even mentioned that it could probably happen at 4am on july 5th of this year, this saturday. it is that close and some were scared of this news. the prediction came from a manga the future i saw, a japanese comic book showing "prophetic" dreams of the creator originally published in 1999. the cover of that said manga mentioned of a disaster on march of 2011. no one really paid much attention to the manga back then, the original publisher was defunct and the book was out of print. and then the mega earthquake on the east side of japan on march of 2011 struck. it was then found out that the manga made this prophecy, and in 2020 the manga has gained huge traction resulting to prices of copies to significantly increase. capitalizing on this attention, reprints with additional pages were made in 2021. the reprint included a warning of a "real disaster" to struck on july 2025.

this has made headlines in japan. why? because people were in panic and july is here. the effect it had to japan was quite significant, visitors who have heard of this manga got scared and cancelled their july trips. tourist numbers dropped.

i don't know about you but i am not someone who believes in prophesies. science tells us that it is impossible to predict earthquakes. many have already speculated that the fault line near japan is already stressed and bound to release. but the also said the same thing about that fault in california, and of a fault in the philippines' manila. we could only deduct these from historical records, but we could never tell when. so are we supposed to stress ourselves out with something we have no control over?

you can probably plan, check where the nearest evacuation zones in your neighborhood are, store some emergency food, prepare an emergency bag with all your important stuff. but that is not because you believe in this prediction but because earthquakes are a real hazard in your area. that is all what we can do, really. and besides, my faith teaches not to believe in baseless predictions.

at the end of the day, i still believe that it is best to live in the present and not worry about the future.

i just found this funny, what started out as physical reflections ended up to be life commentaries. so sorry for that.
