Waterfall Streams of Cambugahay Falls in Siquijor

Hi, ASEAN Hive Community! This time I am showing you all the photos I took at Cambugahay Falls in Siquijor back in 2013. At this time I was testing how to take photos of the waterfall streams by adjusting the photo settings.

What I did here was Long Exposure Photography on waterfall streams. But the problem was, I didn't bring a tripod. I wasn't using my remote shutter. I also never had a Neutral Density filter. If you will explore more into photography, these are the things you need.

What do you need?

  • A DSLR camera
  • It is best to have a sturdy camera tripod
  • a remote shutter
  • ND filter or Neutral Density filter

I only have my DSLR camera. So what I did was to hold my camera using my hands and I needed to exhale and hold my breath for a few seconds. Because if I moved, the camera would shake and so would the subject of the photo.

The Best Settings for Moving Water

To create movement in the water you'll need to slow down your shutter speed. To do this easily, flick over to Aperture Priority mode, simply drop your ISO down really low, increase your aperture to f/22 or the highest your camera will allow.

F-stop: f/36
Exposure time: 1/20 sec
ISO speed: ISO-200
Focal length: 46 mm
Max aperture: 4.8

I used Aperture Priority mode on my camera settings. Aperture means it is the opening when the light passes. I increased the aperture or F-stop to f/36 but that means it was the smallest opening of the camera.

The exposure time also changes. If it's 1/200, the exposure time was very quick. If it's 1/20, meaning the exposure time makes it slow.

F-stop: f/36
Exposure time: 1/13 sec
ISO speed: ISO-200
Focal length: 55 mm
Max aperture: 5

FYI, I decided not to do any color enhancement of the photo. What you see is what you get. If only I had a Neutral Density filter, it would do its magic. But I just don't know how to use it. I remember I have one.

DSC_0686.JPG

F-stop: f/5.6
Exposure time: 1/200 sec
ISO speed: ISO-200
Focal length: 55 mm
Max aperture: 5

And you can see here that the photo was exposed. The water stream was just too white and you couldn't see the details of the water stream.

The aperture or F-stop at f/5.6 was widely open and the exposure time at 1/200 sec was too fast.

F-stop: f/36
Exposure time: 1/8 sec
ISO speed: ISO-200
Focal length: 55 mm
Max aperture: 5

I adjusted the f-stop again and so was the exposure time. The water stream became so smooth.

F-stop: f/36
Exposure time: 1/15 sec
ISO speed: ISO-200
Focal length: 55 mm
Max aperture: 5

And also this one...

DSC_0693.JPG

F-stop: f/36
Exposure time: 1/10 sec
ISO speed: ISO-200
Focal length: 55 mm
Max aperture: 5

I really enjoyed the results so much. The water streams never looked boring at all.

DSC_0687.JPG

F-stop: f/36
Exposure time: 1/6 sec
ISO speed: ISO-200
Focal length: 55 mm
Max aperture: 5

I adjusted the exposure time which 1/6 sec.

DSC_0694.JPG

F-stop: f/32
Exposure time: 1/13 sec
ISO speed: ISO-200
Focal length: 34 mm
Max aperture: 4.6

Since it was a little shady in this area, I had to adjust the setting.

DSC_0696.JPG

F-stop: f/25
Exposure time: 1/40 sec
ISO speed: ISO-200
Focal length: 20 mm
Max aperture: 3.8

Anyway, enjoy the rest of the photos.

What is Aperture?

According to Wikipedia:

In optics, an aperture is a hole or an opening through which light travels. More specifically, the aperture and focal length of an optical system determine the cone angle of the bundle of rays that come to a focus in the image plane.
