Clam Chowder & Żurek - Rich Soup Served in a Bread Bowl 🍲 😋 |

One of the car shows mentioned in yesterday's post took place near Fisherman's Wharf of San Francisco, where I had the famous clam chowder.🙂 So today let's have a look at this hearty soup, as well as the Polish soup Żurek. I'm thinking of Żurek because it's also served in a bread bowl when I first tried it in a restaurant in Warsaw.
Clam chowder originated in the Northeastern parts of USA, but is now available throughout the country. The one I had here at Fisherman's Wharf looks like the prevalent "white" clam chowder from New England. The soup, as you can see from my photo, was quite creamy, which went well with the sourdough bread. It contained clams, potatoes, and vegetables. I also got a shrimp sandwich and a soda included in the meal package.
Other regional variations include Manhattan's "red" clam chowder, which includes tomatoes, and Rhode Island's clam chowder with a clear soup. I once tried the clear soup in Boston and liked it more than the creamy one. The "white" one I had was so thick and filling that it's hard for me to finish. In fact, I left a bit for the seagull who was standing on the table and constantly staring at my soup...XD He seemed to enjoy it more than I did.

Now, it's the turn of Żurek. That was almost ten years ago, on a cold winter night in Warsaw, when my local host took me to a restaurant to try the magic soup. He told me that Żurek is traditionally served at Easter time in Poland, but it can be found at other times as well.
The edible bowl was made of bread too and tasted softer than the above–mentioned sourdough bread. There were halved hard-boiled eggs, sausages, and other bits and pieces in the rich soup. It's an excellent choice for keeping warm on a chilly day.

Looking at the prices on the menu I thought this must have been many years ago. I agree with you on the white being too much, but in my opinion it's the tastier of the 3 varieties.
Yep, it's over 8 years ago... I guess you have the clear soup experience in Asia, which is what I'm used to.:)
Ooooh looks so good!
Love this idea and dish looks so delicious ❤️
The bread bowl is fun indeed!
