What's up Hivers! For today's WednesdayWalk, let's have a look at some vineyards in Pomerol... This beginning was written on Wednesday, but I didn't finish the photos part for the post due to other tasks that day. So let's go on this walk now on Friday. :)

Pomerol is a French commune in the Bordeaux wine region's "Right Bank". It is probably not as well known as its celebrity neighbour Saint-Emilion, while it has a solid reputation among wine lovers.

Unlike some of my family and friends who are wine experts, I am not really into wine (rightfully so, as someone allergic to alcohol XD). However, walking around in the countryside here taking in the beautiful autumn scenery and fresh crisp air is a wonderful experience.

In this commune, there is a small church dedicated to Saint Jean de Pomerol, but I didn't see a town centre or square. Only a few roads and houses sit among the vineyards. As I walked through the vineyards and wine châteaux, the lovely church tower was always visible.

In fact, Pomerol is Bordeaux's smallest major wine region, covering only about 12 square kilometres. It took me roughly 2 hours to stroll around the entire area. It could be even shorter if you don't walk slowly, marvel at little details, and constantly take pictures like I did.

Despite its small size, Pomerol was a prestigious wine region that was among the first to be granted AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) status in 1936. Because of the compact estates, production is low, and the high demand results in the "prestigious" price.

Pomerol wine has no official classification, and there are no co-operatives in operation. While the famous Château Pétrus is widely recognised as a premier cru wine.

Well suited to the local soil and climate, Merlot is the most widely planted grape in Pomerol. The wine produced here is predominately from Merlot grapes with Cabernet Franc playing a supporting role.

Wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs may be able to hold long discussions or write lengthy essays on this subject, but let me keep it short and sweet. Because I can only tell you from my winegrape tasting experience that the grapes here are sweet and juicy with an earthy note. :) I enjoyed its blackberry-like flavour more than some table grapes, and I am perfectly fine without all the alcohol content, acidity, tannin, or whatever else that adds to my itchy reaction...

These wine grapes are not meant to be eaten out of hand, but I was given one to try out the taste, more concentrated flavor than table grapes.
