Downtown Again

As fate would have it, today it was my turn to return to my safe place in the city, which means that I unintentionally strolled through the magical blocks of downtown Caracas, spaces that are full of stories, memories and anecdotes, both individual and collective. Currently, this is a point of high tourist interest, a lot of commercial movement and from where we can appreciate very closely the political power, since most of the buildings surrounding this area enclose behind its walls state institutions whose decision-making power is quite strong.

De Nuevo en el Centro de la Ciudad

Por cuestiones del destino, hoy me tocó regresar a mi lugar seguro en la ciudad, lo que significa que sin querer di un paseo por las mágicas cuadras del centro de Caracas, espacios que están llenos de historias, recuerdos y anécdotas, tanto individuales como colectivas. Actualmente, este es un punto de alto interés turístico, mucho movimiento comercial y desde donde podemos apreciar muy de cerca el poder político, ya que la mayoría de los edificios que circundan esta área encierran detrás de sus muros instituciones estatales cuyo poder de decisión es bastante fuerte.

As everything in Caracas here there are also contrasts, easily our eyes can be stopped in a construction treated in the colonial era, but in a matter of seconds we could see without any inconvenience to a building erected in more recent dates, thus marking a clear difference in the use of materials and a very notable inequality in terms of space to build. But all this generates an aura that is debated between the classic and the modern, for us caraqueños this does not break with the pattern of the place, but, on the contrary, is part of it, which makes the environment of the center of the city in a truly unique space with its own personality.

Como todo en Caracas aquí también hay contrastes, fácilmente nuestra mirada puede estar detenida en una construcción tratada en la época colonial, pero en cuestiones de segundos podríamos divisar sin ningún inconveniente a algún edificio levantado en fechas más recientes, marcando de esta manera una Clara diferencia en el uso de los materiales y una desigualdad muy notable en cuanto al espacio de construir. Pero todo esto nos genera un aura que se debate entre lo clásico y lo moderno, para nosotros los caraqueños esto no rompe con el patrón del lugar, sino que, por el contrario, forma parte de él, lo que convierte al ambiente del centro de la ciudad en un espacio realmente único y con personalidad propia.

In recent years, vi such restoration processes have been carried out on the most iconic buildings in this area, thus seeking to preserve the historical legacy and at the same time wanting these constructions to continue to be useful to society in modern times, thus further enhancing the tourism sector and at the same time keeping alive the beautiful features of an area that deserves to be cared for and preserved for life.

En los últimos años, vi esos procesos de restauración se han llevado a cabo en los edificios más icónicos de esta zona, con lo cual se busca preservar el legado histórico y al mismo tiempo se quiere que dichas construcciones sigan siendo útiles para la sociedad en tiempos modernos, con lo cual se puede potenciar aún más el sector turístico y al mismo tiempo se mantienen vivos los bellos rasgos de una zona que merece ser cuidada y preservada por toda la vida.

The demolishing eagerness that characterizes the city of Caracas should not continue to be part of the reality of the historic center, since this is an area where we can currently find features of various periods of our republican and colonial history, it is certainly not only the tourist epicenter of the city, but it is also a window to the past, it is an area which allows us to remember our successes and failures, the good and bad times, so it has become a kind of clear and accurate witness of a city that is still struggling between history, present and future.

El afán demoledor que caracteriza a la ciudad de Caracas no debe seguir formando parte de la realidad del casco histórico, ya que esta es una zona en donde podemos encontrar actualmente rasgos de diversas épocas de nuestra historia republicana y colonial, sin duda alguna no solo es el epicentro turístico de la ciudad, sino que también es una ventana al pasado, se trata de un área la cual nos permite recordar nuestros aciertos y desaciertos, los buenos y malos momentos, por eso se ha convertido en una especie de testigo claro y preciso de una ciudad que sigue debatiéndose entre la historia, el presente y el futuro.
