A Retro Shopping Mall

Caracas is the city of shopping malls. In this small valley nestled on the Caribbean coast, we find a capital that, without realizing it, has grown unstoppably, exhausting available space and facing a constant need to reinvent itself in order to continue pursuing its development. But from the oil boom of the last century and our consumerist economic model, the need arose to build spaces dedicated to commerce, where we can get everything done easily and quickly.

Un Centro Comercial Retro

Caracas es la ciudad de los centros comerciales. Sobre este pequeño valle ubicado al borde del Caribe, nos encontramos con una capital que, sin darse cuenta, ha crecido de manera indetenible, agotando los espacios y con la constante necesidad de reinventarse para de esta manera poder seguir apuntando a su desarrollo. Pero desde la hoja petrolera del siglo pasado y nuestro modelo de economía consumista, surgió la necesidad de construir espacios dedicados al comercio, en donde podamos resolver todo de manera fácil y rápida.

This is how shopping malls emerged—capable of housing numerous stores, with spaces designed for a large flow of people and featuring a pleasant atmosphere from every perspective. From the 1950s to the present day, this model has continued to develop and refine itself, undoubtedly leaving the distinctive marks of its era.

Es así como surgieron los centros comerciales capaces de albergar numerosos establecimientos, con espacios adecuados para un gran flujo de personas y con una temática agradable desde todo punto de vista. Desde los años 50 hasta nuestros días, ese modelo ha ido desarrollándose, perfeccionándose y, sin duda alguna, dejando las huellas características de su época.

Today, it would be easy to find glass and digital screens in the aisles of the most modern shopping malls, but decades ago, innovation was defined by architectural design, the materials used, and the quality of the stores located within these spaces.

Hoy en día sería fácil encontrar cristales y pantallas digitales entre los pasillos de los centros comerciales más modernos, pero décadas atrás la innovación estaba marcada por los trazos arquitectónicos, los materiales usados y la calidad de los comercios ubicados dentro de este espacio.

Walking into a shopping center like this today is a somewhat retro experience that mentally transports us back in time, but at the same time, it’s great that the structures remain intact, that life within these spaces continues to thrive, and that the owners are constantly reinventing themselves to better adapt to the changing times.

Hoy entrar en un centro comercial de este tipo es una experiencia un tanto retro, la cual mentalmente nos traslada hace años atrás, pero al mismo tiempo es genial que las estructuras se mantengan intactas, que la vida dentro de estos espacios siga fluyendo y que los propietarios se vayan reinventando para así poder adaptarse de mejor manera a los nuevos tiempos.
