Independence and Freedom

From the moment Venezuela became an independent country, different currents of thought emerged, which shaped a tumultuous history full of contradictions, where the victors narrated the facts and the losers suffered the condemnation of rejection and oblivion. This is how time went by until we reach our days, where we still continue to fight for ideas, dreams and opportunities.

Desde el momento en que Venezuela se conformó como un país independiente surgieron diversas corrientes de pensamiento, las cuales fueron moldeando una historia tumultuosa y llena de contradicciones, en donde los victoriosos narraban los hechos y los perdedores sufrían la condena del rechazo y el olvido. Así fue pasando el tiempo hasta llegar a nuestros días, en donde aún continuamos luchando por ideas, sueños y oportunidades.

All the cities of the world have small corners where elements of invaluable importance for the city are treasured, not so much for their monetary value, but for their historical representation, spiritual strength or moral base. Thus, in the Municipal Palace of the city of Caracas I found a solitary chapel, but at the same time very solemn, where there are not many ornaments, but where we can find one of the fundamental pieces in the construction of the nation we know today.

Todas las ciudades del mundo cuentan con pequeños rincones en donde se atesoran elementos de invaluable importancia para la ciudad, no tanto por su valor monetario, sino por su representación histórica, fuerza espiritual o base moral. Es así como en el Palacio Municipal de la ciudad de Caracas me encontré con una capilla solitaria, pero al mismo tiempo muy solemne, en donde no abundan los adornos, pero en donde podemos encontrar una de las piezas fundamentales en la construcción de la nación que hoy conocemos.

In a sturdy wooden chest lies an open book; on it is read a text in perfect Spanish, but perhaps with a conjugation and intonation somewhat different from the one we know today. But leaving aside the nuances of the language, this document represents the birth certificate of a nation that, unknowingly in the year 1810, began to take the first steps towards an independent and sovereign future.

En una robusta arca de madera subyace un libro abierto; sobre él se lee un texto en perfecto idioma castellano, pero quizás con una conjugación y entonación un tanto diferente a la que conocemos hoy en día. Pero dejando de lado los matices del idioma, este documento representa la partida de nacimiento de una nación que, sin saberlo en el año 1810, comenzó a dar los primeros pasos hacia un futuro independiente y soberano.

Unwittingly I was there, in front of more than 200 years of history, looking at an old book whose pages detail the town council session of April 19, 1810, a date in which not only a Captain General resigned, but an entire people raised their voices against the colonial monarchy and the pre-established order.

Sin querer yo estaba allí, frente a más de 200 años de historia, observando un antiguo libro en cuyas páginas se detallan la sesión del cabildo del 19 de abril de 1810, una fecha en la cual no solo renunciaba un Capitán General, sino que todo un pueblo alzaba su voz en contra de la monarquía colonial y del orden preestablecido.

Although it is a public space, it is incredible how many people are unaware of the solemnity that is kept here, which makes me a lucky guy, since I could enjoy practically alone in that place, the same place that 200 years ago I walked back and forth to many heroes of our independence, whose surnames today resound in different spaces, great monuments and history books. It is great that an everyday day becomes an extraordinary adventure, in which we can not only interact with the past, but we can without realizing it learn a little more about our roots, since it is the didactic knowledge that allows us to discover our essence, maintain our traditions, cultures and at the same time preserve the greatest legacy that our heroes have inherited us, which is none other than freedom.

Si bien es de un espacio público, es increíble la cantidad de personas que desconocen la solemnidad que aquí se resguarda, lo cual me convierte en un chico afortunado, ya que pude disfrutar prácticamente a solas de ese lugar, el mismo que hace 200 años yo caminar de un lado a otro a muchos héroes de nuestra independencia, cuyos apellidos hoy en día resuenan en diferentes espacios, grandes monumentos y libros de historia. Es genial que un día cotidiano se convierta en una aventura extraordinaria, en la cual no solo se pueda interactuar con el pasado, sino que podamos sin darnos cuenta aprender un poco más sobre nuestras raíces, puesto que es el conocimiento didáctico el que nos permite descubrir nuestra esencia, mantener nuestras tradiciones, culturas y al mismo tiempo preservar el legado más grande que nos han heredado nuestros héroes, el cual no es otra cosa que la libertad.

For as long as I can remember, I have enjoyed interacting with living history, being able to walk through those spaces where decisions were once made, nations were built, laws were forged or sentences were passed. Fortunately, the always beautiful city of Caracas has been the capital for many years and thanks to this reason many pages have been written about it that have transcended time and, therefore, there are an infinite number of places whose essence and energy stand out for having been the epicenter of events whose outcome has been decisive in national history.

Desde que tengo memoria, me ha gustado interactuar con la historia viva, poder caminar por esos espacios en donde antes se tomaban decisiones, se construían naciones, se forjaban leyes o se dictaban sentencias. Afortunadamente, la siempre hermosa ciudad de Caracas ha sido la capital por durante muchos años y gracias a esta razón sobre ella se han escrito muchas páginas que han trascendido el tiempo y, por lo tanto, existen una infinidad de lugares cuya esencia y energía se destacan por haber sido el epicentro de acontecimientos cuyo resultado ha sido determinante en la historia nacional.
