A Walk Filled with Faith
I decided to go for a walk through one of the most iconic places in my city: the La Candelaria monumental and religious complex, a place that today has become a refuge of faith, but at the same time a concrete example of the resilience of Venezuelans and the fighting spirit of a people who will persevere despite any difficulty.

Un Paseo Lleno De Fe
Decidí salir a caminar por uno de los lugares más icónicos de mi ciudad; se trata del complejo monumental y religioso La Candelaria, un lugar que hoy en día se ha convertido en refugio de la fe, pero al mismo tiempo en la muestra concreta de la resiliencia del venezolano y del espíritu luchador de un pueblo que saldrá adelante a pesar de cualquier dificultad.
As you all know, 15 days ago Venezuela was marked forever; the earthquakes left a very bitter feeling in our hearts and a fear that, personally, I will never be able to forget. Although the national mourning period ends today and the streets of the capital, Caracas, are regaining their vibrancy and sense of normalcy, the atmosphere is still tinged with sadness and widespread despondency; yet, despite this, people are trying to move forward, overcoming every obstacle.
Como todos ustedes saben, hace 15 días Venezuela quedó marcada para siempre; los movimientos telúricos dejaron en nuestro corazón un sentimiento muy amargo y un susto que en lo personal jamás podré olvidar. A pesar de que hoy termina el luto nacional y de que las calles de la capital, Caracas, vuelven a retomar su dinamismo y normalidad, en el ambiente aún se puede saborear la tristeza y el desánimo generalizado, pero a pesar de ello se intenta seguir adelante superando cada obstáculo.
I wanted to go out for a walk, breathe some fresh air, and clear my mind; without planning it, my steps led me to this place of religious worship, where the candles are always lit and where devotion to Dr. José Gregorio Hernández is the driving force behind everyone’s actions.
Quise salir a caminar un rato, a respirar aire puro y a despejar la mente; sin planearlo, mis pasos me llevaron hasta este lugar de culto religioso, en donde las velas siempre se mantienen encendidas y en donde la devoción por el doctor José Gregorio Hernández es el motor que mueve a todos.
The National Shrine of Our Lady of Candelaria is a monumental site, filled with arches, columns, and gilded altarpieces, where the years are counted in centuries and where the earth’s tremors were also felt with great force, leaving some marks in their wake, yet at the same time reminding us that faith and human determination will always prevail above all else.
El Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria es un espacio monumental, lleno de arcos, columnas y retablos dorados, en donde los años se cuentan por siglos y en donde el temblar de la tierra también se sintió con mucha fuerza, dejando a su paso algunas marcas, pero al mismo tiempo recordándonos que la fe y el empeño humano siempre estarán sobre todas las cosas.
Normally, this place is teeming with visitors, but today it was somewhat empty. All its doors were open, the sky was cloudy, and the air was a bit chilly; without a doubt, this description paints a somewhat unusual scene, but I think it’s part of the ever-changing nature of the reality we’re living through.
Normalmente, este es un lugar que se encuentra repleto de visitantes, pero hoy estaba un tanto vacío. Todas sus puertas se encontraban abiertas, el cielo estaba nublado y el ambiente un tanto frío; sin duda alguna, esta descripción corresponde a una escena un tanto atípica, pero creo que es parte del dinamismo propio de la realidad que estamos viviendo.
I decided to sit for a while on one of the benches inside the temple; if I told you it was to pray, I’d be lying, since the truth is I just sat there looking around, taking in every detail of that place that exudes grandeur, elegance, and a power that transcends the earthly realm.
Decidí sentarme un rato en una de las bancas del interior del templo; si les digo que era para orar, les estoy mintiendo, puesto que la verdad solamente me quedé mirando todo mi entorno, prestando atención a todos los detalles de aquel lugar que desborda grandeza, elegancia y un poder que va más allá de lo terrenal.
Its pillars are, without a doubt, very well built, and their strength will keep the structure standing for many more years; most of the finishes on the altars and floors are marble, while on the ceilings, finely polished wood forms the perfect framework for a magnificent structure.
Sus pilares, sin duda alguna, están muy bien construidos y su fortaleza la seguirá en pie durante muchos años más; la mayoría de los acabados en los altares y pisos son de mármol, mientras que en los techos una madera finamente pulida se convierte en el esqueleto perfecto de una estructura grandiosa.
Just outside the temple, we come across a large plaza, which could be the perfect prototype of a public space in Caracas, as it is a spacious area with concrete surfaces and filled with trees of all sizes—trees that not only provide incredible natural shade but also create a much cooler atmosphere than the streets and avenues.
A las afueras del templo nos encontramos con una plaza grande, la cual podría ser el prototipo perfecto del espacio público caraqueño, ya que es un lugar amplio, con acabados en cemento y repleto de árboles de todos los tamaños, los cuales no solamente brindan una sombra natural increíble, sino que también nos regalan un ambiente mucho más fresco que en las calles y avenidas.
Keep in mind that we’re in the heart of a bustling commercial district; here, we’ll see activity at all four corners—people going about their daily lives—in an urban setting that’s far removed from the historic and even further from the colonial. Here, we’re not in a completely modern city, but rather in an in-between space that still retains its own identity.
Recordemos que nos encontramos en el epicentro de una zona altamente comercial; acá veremos movimiento en las cuatro esquinas, personas que van de un lado a otro llevando a cabo sus propias vidas y con un entorno urbano que se aleja de lo histórico y mucho más de lo colonial. Aquí nos encontramos no en una ciudad totalmente moderna, pero sí en un espacio intermedio que sigue teniendo su propia identidad.
Strolls without a set direction, rules, or itineraries are often the most interesting, since this is where we can interact closely with the city and its people, discovering magical places while also allowing ourselves to take that much-needed breather to clear our minds, disconnect a little from all the negativity, and open our hearts to the positive energy, joy, and optimism that surround all Venezuelans.
Los paseos sin rumbos, protocolos ni cartillas son aquellos que suelen ser los más interesantes, ya que es aquí en donde podemos interactuar de cerca con la ciudad y su gente, descubriendo lugares mágicos y al mismo tiempo permitiéndonos tomar ese respiro que tanto necesitamos, para despejar la mente, desconectarnos un poco de todo lo negativo e irle el corazón a las energías positivas, la alegría y el optimismo que tanto rodea a todos los venezolanos.
