A Tour of the Liberator’s Mausoleum
In Venezuela, both June 24 and July 24 are days on which we commemorate two events that have forever shaped our history, as the struggles for independence and the birth of the Liberator are, without a doubt, indelible milestones in our national culture. But in addition, this year on June 24, we endured one of the most devastating natural disasters in our entire history; yet despite this, our spirit remains strong, and our goal remains to move forward in building a much more prosperous and magnificent future.

En Venezuela, tanto el 24 de junio como el 24 de julio recordamos dos fechas que marcaron nuestra historia para siempre, ya que las gestas independentistas y el natalicio del libertador sin duda alguna son hitos imborrables en la cultura nacional. Pero adicionalmente, este año el 24 de junio sufrimos uno de los eventos naturales más fuertes en toda nuestra historia, pero a pesar de ello nuestro espíritu sigue siendo fuerte y nuestra meta sigue siendo avanzar en la construcción de un futuro mucho más próspero y grandioso.
For today’s tour, I’ve decided to visit one of the most important sites in the city of Caracas. This brings me to the area surrounding the Liberator’s mausoleum, a structure that stands practically on the edge of the city’s historic center, yet whose characteristics are those of a modern, even minimalist, building. Without a doubt, it stands out sharply from its surroundings; its monumental scale immediately makes it the focal point, and its sail-shaped architecture makes it one of the most interesting sites in the entire area.
Para el Paseo de hoy he decidido mirar hacia uno de los lugares más importantes de la ciudad de Caracas. Es de esta forma como llego a los alrededores del mausoleo del libertador, una estructura que se alza prácticamente en los bordes del centro histórico de la ciudad, pero cuyas características son las de un edificio moderno y hasta minimalista. Sin duda alguna, rompe con todo su entorno; por sus características monumentales se convierte de inmediato en el punto focal y su arquitectura con forma de vela lo convierte en uno de los lugares más interesantes de toda la zona.
I will never tire of repeating that Caracas is a city where contrasts are the order of the day; perhaps when this building was first completed, the conceptual clash was quite stark, but today the public has come to accept it as their own, and—without even realizing it—it has become not only a place of reverence but also a public space used for recreational activities and, on this occasion, for taking a walk and enjoying a moment of tranquility.
No me cansaré de repetir que Caracas es una ciudad en donde los contrastes están a la orden del día; quizás cuando este edificio estaba concluido el choque conceptual fue bastante fuerte, pero hoy en día la población ya lo ha asimilado como propio y, sin darnos cuenta, se ha convertido no solo en un lugar de reverencia, sino en un espacio de uso público que sirve para actividades recreativas y en esta ocasión para caminar y disfrutar de un momento de tranquilidad.
Such things can be found in every corner of Caracas. Here, too, we find a space where nature makes its presence felt, as large, leafy trees are everywhere, providing us with natural shade, a pleasant temperature, and fairly good air quality.
Esas cosas, como en cualquier rincón de Caracas. Aquí también nos encontramos con un espacio en donde la naturaleza se hace presente, ya que los grandes y frondosos árboles se encuentran por doquier, regalándonos sombras naturales, una temperatura agradable y una calidad del aire bastante buena.
This isn’t the first time I’ve explored these spaces, but the truth is that every time you walk through here, you discover something new; you recharge your energy and enjoy a peaceful space in the midst of a very dynamic city. Moreover, it’s impossible not to notice that the rear esplanade, the small balconies, and the various settings that make up this space are ideal for a photo tour where you can capture many picture-perfect moments.
No es la primera vez que recorro estos espacios, pero la realidad es que cada vez que uno camina por acá se encuentra con algo diferente, se recargan las energías y se disfruta de un espacio tranquilo en medio de una ciudad muy dinámica. Además, es imposible no percatarse de que la explanada trasera, los pequeños balcones y los diferentes escenarios que conforman este espacio son ideales para un recorrido fotográfico en donde podemos capturar muchas postales.
From my point of view, this walk through Caja de Maravilla is what I call a perfect stroll, since not only do we find ourselves in a very beautiful place, but at the same time we’re surrounded by history, nature, and urban design—elements that, in my view, are the most appealing things we can find within a city.
Desde mi punto de vista, este recorrido en caja de maravilla es lo que llamo un paseo perfecto, ya que no solo nos encontramos con un lugar muy bonito, sino que al mismo tiempo estamos rodeados de historias, naturaleza y urbanismo, elementos que desde mi perspectiva son los más atractivos que podemos encontrar dentro de una ciudad.
Best of all, since this is a tourist area, safety is very good, and connectivity is excellent, as various transportation routes pass through this area and the entire network of downtown boulevards is interconnected, offering us an exceptional stroll. That’s why I’m so happy to have had the opportunity to walk these streets again—streets I consider my own.
Lo mejor de todo es que, al ser esta un área turística, la seguridad es muy buena, la conectividad es excelente, ya que diferentes rutas de transporte atraviesan este espacio y toda la red de bulevares del centro se interconecta, regalándonos un paseo excepcional. Es por esta razón que me siento muy contento por haber tenido la oportunidad de volver a caminar por estas calles, las cuales reconozco como propias.
All historical and tourist landmarks must be preserved not only for the enjoyment of the citizens of Caracas, but as an unmistakable symbol of our national identity; which is why today I am very happy to know that it is undergoing a process of extensive restoration, aimed not only at repairing the damage caused by the passage of time but also at overcoming the aftermath of the earthquakes that occurred a little over a month ago.
Todos los monumentos históricos y turísticos deben ser preservados no solo para el disfrute de los ciudadanos de Caracas, sino como un símbolo inequívoco de nuestra identidad nacional; es por ello que hoy me siento muy feliz por saber que estaba atravesando un proceso de profunda restauración, en donde no solo se busca corregir los daños causados por el paso del tiempo, sino en donde también se busca superar las secuelas de los movimientos telúricos vividos hace un poco más de un mes.
I hope to have the opportunity to walk through these spaces again in the near future—an opportunity that doesn’t leave me feeling nostalgic as I finish my tour, but quite the opposite: with the certainty that I’ll soon return to discover those new details hidden in every corner of this place.
Espero tener la oportunidad de volver a caminar por estos espacios en un futuro cercano; oportunidad que no termino mi recorrido con nostalgia, sino todo lo contrario, con la certeza de que pronto regresaré para descubrir esos nuevos detalles que se esconden en cada rincón de este espacio.
